How pretty are these Victorian Heirloom Jar Covers? They are super fast and easy to crochet, plus the crochet pattern to the pint jar is free. Most crochet artist’s can have one made in a little over 30 minutes. They match the Victorian Heirloom Basket. I love making things that are useful and that can fancy up the house, and remind me of a time gone by.

There are so many uses for these elegant jar covers. They can hold make up brushes, cotton balls, or bath salts. I think they would be pretty on the kitchen table with a bunch of freshly picked wild flowers
The “Victorian Heirloom” jar covers feature a drop over lace edge that has a crochet chart for you to follow. You will then switch to a smaller crochet hook and use only one strand of yarn, and yes the lace is easy too!

These Jar Covers remind me of my grandmother. She always had a pretty container in the middle of the table that held a huge amount of spoons. I still don’t know why she had them in the middle of the table. Maybe it was a fad back then?
When we would go to grandma’s house for a visit we would get a bowl of cheerios with brown sugar for breakfast. I always had a hard time picking which spoon I wanted because the handles were so pretty. There were many sleek art deco styles, beautiful semi curved floral handled ones, but my favorite was dainty and lacey with miniature flowers on the handle. It took time to find one of those, and if I was hungry I would settle for one that had a semi curved floral handle.
If grandma were here, I would make her one to hold her spoons. The colors would need to match her dishes. I remember her dishes so well, but that’s a story for another day.
The jar covers would be great to use in an office sitting on a desk, or alongside the matching Victorian Heirloom oval basket. Ya know that basket can hold many other things. It isn’t just for tissue rolls.

Hold two strands of Red Heart Super Saver in colors of your choosing. Approx. 100 yards of MC and small amount of CC approx. 30 yds; CC 2 approx. 10 yds.

Stitch Guide
join w/ = join with
MC = Main Color
CC = Contrasting Color
CC 2 = 2nd Contrasting Color
SLP ST = Slip Stitch
CH = Chain
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
H BP HDC = High Back Post Half Double Crochet
SP = Space
BLO = Back Loop Only
nxt = Next
* * = Repeat between the stars the number of times stated
x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on
in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch to complete stitch or sequence of stitches stated.
[ ] = repeat sequence of stitches between brackets number of times or x more; ex. [ ] 5x more, sequence would be executed 6 times.
Pattern Notes:
1: Beginning CH or CH’s of each round, do not count as a stitch unless otherwise noted.
2: Shell = [DC in nxt CH 4 Space 3x, CH 3, [DC in same CH 4 space] 3x
3: Number rounds will start over when making the lace edge.
4. After making the lace edge, grab each point and give it a little pull, to help it look crisp and fancy.
CH 3 join in ring;
Round 1: CH 1, (HDC in ring) 10x; join w/SLP ST in beg. HDC (10 HDC)
Round 2: CH 1; 2 HDC in joining st; 2 HDC in each st around; join w/SLP ST in beg. HDC; (20 HDC)
Round 3: CH 1; H BP HDC; in each st around; join w/SLP ST in beg. HDC; (20 H BP HDC) Please refer to photo tutorial below the chart.
H BP HDC PHOTO TUTORIAL: Pic 1: Two pins show the opening directly below the top two loops. This is where you will insert your hook from back to front. You are “HIGH” about the main post of the stitch. A normal BP HDC is worked under the top 3 loops of the HDC, around the main post. The High BP HDC will be “above” the main post, up high, directly under the top two loops.

NOTE: If you need more height please repeat Round 9
Round 4-9: CH 1; HDC in joining ST and in each ST around; join w/SLP ST in beg. HDC; (20 HDC)
Round 10: CH 1; HDC in joining ST; [HDC in nxt ST] 6x; HDC DEC; [HDC in nxt st] 11x more; join w/SLP ST in beg. HDC; (19 HDC)
Round 11: CH 1; HDC in joining ST; [HDC in nxt ST] 13x; HDC DEC; [HDC in nxt st] 3x; IMPORTANT!! Drop MC and pull up 2 strands of CC at last pull through of last ST; IMPORTANT!! Changing color is important; join w/SLP ST in beg. HDC; (18 HDC)
Round 12: SC in joining ST and in each ST around; join w/SLP ST in beg. SC; drop and end off one strand of yarn at the end of this round, you will be using only one strand of yarn throughout the rest of the pattern (18 SC)

Round 1: CH 1 and turn so that you are looking inside the jar cover;
SC in BLO of 1st st, CH 4, skp 1 st, SC in BLO of nxt ST; CH 4, do not skp 1 st, SC in BLO of nxt st;
[CH 4, skp 1 st, SC in BLO of nxt ST; CH 4, do not skp 1 st, SC in BLO of nxt st] 4x;
CH 4, skp 1 st, SC in BLO of nxt ST; CH 4, join w/SLP ST in beginning SC. (12 CH 4 spaces)
Round 2: SLP ST in 1st CH of CH 4 space; CH3, this counts as 1st DC; [DC in CH 4 space] 2x, CH 3, [DC in same CH 4 space] 3x; SC in nxt CH 4 sp; [Shell, SC in nxt CH 4 sp] 5x; join w/SLP ST to 3rd Ch of beginning CH 3, pull up CC2 at join if changing colors; (6 shells w/6 SC)
Round 3: (Note: all SC stitches of the previous round will be skipped during this next sequence) CH1; SC in joining ST; [SC in nxt st] 2x; SC in CH 3 sp, CH2, SC in same CH 3 sp; [SC in nxt st] 3x;
*Skip SC; [SC in nxt st] 3x; SC in CH 3 sp, CH2, SC in same CH 3 sp; [SC in nxt st] 3x; * 5x; join w/SLP ST in beginning SC; end off, secure and weave in all ends.
