In Colonial America, sparse supply and high demand made the Pineapple a prize to attain.  When trade ships transported this precious fruit, most of it was rotten due to the hot, humid, and slow voyage from the Caribbean. If a ship was fast, and blessed to encounter good weather conditions, they could deliver ripe pineapples to the shops of Colonial cities such as Boston, Philadelphia, Annapolis and Williamsburg.

When a ship arrived back in port and had unpacked its precious cargo, the captain would return to his home with a pineapple in hand.  He would spear the pineapple on the front garden gate to let his friends and neighbors know that he had returned home safely, and was ready to receive and entertain guests.
