I have always loved lace and it’s so easy to create with just a hook and a string of yarn. Lace fan’s are fun and it can be a simple stitch to create.

As a young woman I learned how ladies in the Victorian Era would use a fan to communicate with a suitor, or to indicate whether they were affianced, or looking to acquire a fiance. A friend showed me this website that has a complete dictionary of fan talk.
Who knew it could be flipped over? I love how the Ladies Mirrored Fan Lace Scarf looks when using Mandala Yarn. While I was making the scarf I had to make a decision of whether to cut or not to cut. When I made the pink, blue, yellow and white scarf, I needed to cut the yarn because the blue was going to take over the scarf. I wanted to get as many colors as possible in there. After I was finished, I grabbed a few pics with a cell phone. (pic is below) and what a surprise to see that it could be flipped over to get a whole new look. Same scarf, two looks, or three if you want to wear it long.

This design was inspired by an older design that I published in 2012. The original design was intended to be a cowl that you can also be worn as a stole. You will find the pattern here.
Yellow is my favorite color and after making my first scarf with Narnia, I grabbed a partial cake of Draco. I was excited and anticipating wearing this with a brown skirt. Alas that yellow chartreuse isn’t a pleasing color for me to wear. No worries, I flipped it over and I like it much better!
Ladies Mirrored Fan Lace Scarf
Yarn: (3) Mandala yarn. Color “Narnia” or “Draco” or colors of choice. I let the colors flow and cut when it was necesarry. Approx. 450 yds.
Using (4) weight yarn would be totally acceptable, but keep in mind the measurements will not be the same.
Hook: J-10/6.0mm
Gauge: Not important. Approx. measurements are given throughout the pattern. (Unblocked)
Special Stitches:
Fan: *dc, ch1, * Repeat 3 more x in ch4 arch space
Color Code:
Red = Woman’s Petite
Blue = Woman’s
Green = Plus
Stitch Guide:
join w/ = join with
slp st = Slip Stitch
ch = Chain
sc = Single Crochet
dc = Double Crochet
nxt = Next
* * = Repeat between the stars the number of times stated;
x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on;
in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch to complete stitch or sequence of stitches stated.
Round 1: ch 208; 224; 240; being careful not to twist, join in a ring with a slp st in 1st ch
The scarf will be Approx. 65″, 69”, 73” around unblocked.
Arch Round
Round 2: ch1, sc in same st, (ch 4, skip 3ch, sc in nxt ch) 51, 56, 60 more x; ch4, join w/slp st in beg sc. (52, 56, 60, ch4 arches)
When instructions call for “in ch1sp, or in arch, you will be inserting hook under “ch1sp or chain arch” to pull up a loop to complete your stitch or stitches.
Fan Round (Fans are 2” w x 1” h)
Round 3: slp st in 1st arch, ch1, sc in same arch, ch1; Fan in nxt arch, *ch1, sc in nxt arch, ch1; Fan in nxt arch;* Repeat 24, 26, 28 more x; join w/slp st to beg. sc. (26, 28, 30 fans) Approx. 65, 69”, 73” around.
Arch Round
Round 4: (slp st in nxt ch1 sp, dc, & ch1 sp) ch 1, sc in same ch1 sp *(ch 4, [skp the nxt, dc, ch1 sp, & dc] sc in nxt ch1 sp; ch4 [skp dc, ch1sp, sc, ch1 sp., & dc] sc under nxt ch1 sp * 25, 27, 29 more x; ch4, skp1 ch1 sp, sc under nxt ch1 sp; ch4, slp st in beg. sc (52, 56, 60, ch4 arches)
Fan Round
Round 5: Repeat Round 3
Round 6 -11, Repeat Round 4 thru 3 in that consecutive order. Round 11 is a Fan Round.
Round 12: *ch1, slp st in nxt st;* repeat around, join w/slp st in beg. st; fasten off weave in all ends.
You have just completed the first layer of lace fans. Approx. 4.5” wide (unblocked)
2nd layer of fans. This layer is shorter and will fold back and lay over the first layer. The second layer will have one less round of fans than the first layer.
With wrong side facing you, and your work hanging upside down, join yarn at beginning sc of row 2 (you will be working at the opposite side of the chains, where the sc of round 2 have been placed)
Round 13; Join w/slp st at beg. sc; ch1, sc in same st,
(ch 4, skip 3ch, sc at bottom of next sc) 51, 56, 60 more x ch4, join w/slp st in beg sc.
(52, 56, 60, ch4 arches)
Round 14-20: Repeat Rounds 2-9 Consecutively as written in the pattern above.
Round 21: *ch1, slp st in nxt st;* repeat around, join w/slp st in beg. st; fasten off weave in all ends. Approx. 3.5” wide (unblocked)
