I wrote the pattern for this lovely lace cowl 8 years ago, and it needed a brushing up. This is one of many patterns that I polish up to reflect my recent pattern writing style. Don’t worry though…it still has a lot of the original thumbprint. This lovely scarf can be worn as a cowl or a stole. Two layers of lace fans add to the elegance of this design.

It’s so easy to dress this up by adding a flowered clip or brooch. I especially love the technique of weaving a narrow or wide and fluffy ribbon through the arch row. This is a lovely effect when wearing it as a stole.

Yarn: Red Heart Shimmer is what was used, but it is discontinued. Use the link below to help you find a suitable replacement if you
want a solid color. This looks beautiful in Mandala and it is a good replacement.

Hook: J-10/6.0mm
Gauge: Not important. Will give approx. measurements throughout the pattern
Special Stitches:
Fan: *dc, ch1, * Repeat 3 more x in ch4 arch space
Ripple Stitch: *ch1, slp st in nxt st;* Repeat
Stitch Guide:
join w/ = join with
slp st = Slip Stitch
ch = Chain
sc = Single Crochet
dc = Double Crochet
nxt = Next
* * = Repeat between the stars the number of times stated;
x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on;
in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch to complete
stitch or sequence of stitches stated
Round 1: ch 144 being careful not to twist, join in a ring with a slp st in 1st ch
This pattern is written so that the scarf should fit around your shoulders and you can wear it as a stole, using a ribbon or scarf, threaded through the 1st arch round, to hold it in place.
Approx. 41” – 42” around. If you would like a longer scarf, add to the chain in a multiple of 8 to add 2” or vice versa if you prefer shorter
Arch Round
Round 2: ch1, sc in same st, (ch 4, skip 3ch, sc in nxt ch) 35 more x; ch4, join w/slp st in beg sc.
(36 ch4 arches)
When instructions call for “in ch1sp, or in arch, you will be inserting hook under “ch1sp or chain arch”
to pull up a loop to complete your stitch or stitches
Fan Round (Fans are 2”w x 1”h)
Round 3: slp st in 1st arch, ch1, sc in same arch ch1; Fan in nxt arch, *ch1, sc in nxt arch, ch1; Fan in nxt arch* Repeat 16 more x; join w/slp st to beg. sc. (18 fans) Approx. 41”- 42” around (unblocked)

Round 4: (slp st in each of nxt ch1 sp, dc, & ch1 sp) ch 1, sc in same ch1 sp *(ch 4, [skp the following
stitches, dc, ch1 sp, & dc] sc in nxt ch1 sp; ch4 [skp the following st’s; dc, ch1sp, sc, ch1 sp., dc] sc in nxtch1 sp )* 16 more x; ch4, skp1 ch1 sp, sc under nxt ch1 sp; ch4, slp st in beg. sc (36 ch4 arches)
Round 5: Repeat Round 3 (Fan round)
Round 6: Repeat Round 4 (Arch round)
Round 7: Repeat Round 3 (Fan round)
Round 8: Repeat Round 4 (Arch round)
Round 9: Repeat Round 3 (Fan round)
Edge Round: Ripple Stitch
Round 10: *ch1, slp st in nxt st;* repeat around, join w/slp st in beg. st; fasten off weave in all ends.
You have just completed the first layer of lace fans. Approx. 4 ¼” wide (unblocked)
2 nd layer of fans. This layer is shorter and will fold back and lay over the first layer. The second
layer will have one less round of fans than the first layer.
With wrong side facing you, and your work hanging upside down, join yarn at beginning sc of row 2 (youwill be working at the opposite side of the chains, where the sc of round 2 have been placed., You are left with a wide beading space to weave the ribbon through)
Round 10; Join w/slp st at beg. sc; ch1, sc in same st, (ch 4, skip 3ch, sc at bottom of next sc) 35 more x ch4, join w/slp st in beg sc. (36 ch4 arches)
Round 11: Repeat Round 3 (Fan round)
Round 12: Repeat Round 4 (Arch round)
Round 13: Repeat Round 3 (Fan round)
Round 14: Repeat Round 4 (Arch round)
Round 15: Repeat Round 3 (Fan round)
Edge Round: Ripple Stitch
Round 16: *ch1, slp st in nxt st;* repeat around, join w/slp st in beg. st; fasten off weave in all ends.
Approx. 2 ¼” wide (unblocked)
