When the Santa basket crochet pattern was first released in 2020, it made a statement.
Remember the toilet paper shortage of 2020? This design was making light of the situation by adding a hanging tag that said, “Just for you, Santa” 2020.
Use this Santa basket as a gag gift or stuff it with gifts for a friend. You could always use it as a candy basket as well.
Maybe you could set this out with cookies for Santa and treats for the reindeer. So many uses for this cute Santa Basket.
Red Heart Super Saver or any stiff (4) yarn is perfect to use for this Santa basket.
It creates stiff sides, and then you trim it with Red Heart Boutique Fur. Add a felt buckle and you are done.

I do love to design crocheted baskets.
They are so fast to make. So useful and pretty too! They are a great way to decorate your home. My favorite baskets are from the Mountain Lodge Series. They are lined with stiff cardboard, covered in Flannel Fabric. They are beautiful.
My second favorite baskets are the Victorian Lace Crocheted Baskets. They have a drop over lace edge that is stunning.
Santa Basket Free Crochet Pattern
Yarn Used:
I used Red Heart Super Saver; Approx. 250 yds of MC, 150 yds of CC ; one ball of Red Heart Boutique Fur in White.
Supplies Needed:
You will also need scissors, a small piece of black and gold felt, glue of choice. If making the hanging tag, you will need a small piece of ribbon, card stock and a printer.

L- 11/8mm & K-10.5/6.5mm

CC 1 = Contrasting Color = Black
join w/ = join with
SLP ST = Slip Stitch

nxt = Next
* * = Repeat between the stars the number of times stated; x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on;
in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch to complete stitch or sequence of stitches stated.
Use “L” Hook
Holding two strands of MC yarn, CH 15 (foundation CH made) Beginning Chains do not count as stitch unless otherwise noted.
Round 1:
HDC in 2nd CH from hook; (HDC in nxt st) 12x; 3 HDC in last st; going down the opposite side of foundation CH; (HDC in nxt st) 12x; 2 HDC in last st; join w/SLP ST in 1st HDC made (30 HDC)
Round 2:
CH 1; 2 HDC in joining st; 2 HDC in nxt st; [HDC in nxt st] 11x; [2 HDC in nxt st] 4x; (HDC in nxt st) 11x; (2 HDC in nxt st) 2x; join w/SLP ST in 1st HDC made (38 HDC)
Round 3:
CH 1; 2 HDC in joining st; (2 HDC in nxt st) 2x; (HDC in nxt st) 14x; (2 HDC in nxt st) 5x; (HDC in nxt st) 14x; (2 HDC in nxt st) 2x; join w/SLP ST in 1st HDC made (48 HDC)
Round 4:
CH 1; HDC in joining st; 2 HDC in nxt st; (HDC in nxt st; 2 HDC in nxt st) 2x; (HDC in nxt st) 15x; (2 HDC in nxt st; HDC in nxt st) 5x; (HDC in nxt st) 14x; 2 HDC in nxt st; HDC in nxt st; 2 HDC in last st; join w/SLP ST in 1st HDC made (58 HDC)
Round 5:
CH 1; HP BP HDC; in each st around; (58 H BP HDC) This stitch will create a ridge.
Use “K” hook
Hold the basket so that the outside of the basket is facing you. You should be looking at the ridge that was created in Round 5.
Round 6 &7:
CH 1 HDC in each st around; join w/slp st to beg. HDC; dropping MC at the end of Round 7, and pull up CC when joining with a slp st (58 HDC)
Round 8 & 9:
Repeat round 6 & 7; dropping CC and pull up MC when joining with a slp st at the end of Round 9
Round 10 & 11:
CH 1 HDC in each st around; join w/slp st to beg. HDC Round 12:
CH 1, SC in joining st and in each st around; join w/slp st to beg. sc; end off
Round 13:
Working from the wrong side of the basket, attach Red Heart Boutique Fur w/ slp st.; ch1; sc in nxt st; skp st; *(sc in nxt st) 2x; skp st* repeat around; join w/slp st to beg. sc, end off weave in all ends.
Make two belt buckles using felt, one in black and one in gold.
Dimensions:
2.5” square with a 1” square hole in the center. Trim 1/4” off the edge of the gold belt buckle.
Use hot glue or glue of choice to adhere the black buckle to the front of the basket. Glue the gold buckle to the top of the black buckle.
