St. Patrick’s Day Beanie

This is the perfect St. Patrick’s Day Beanie and goes perfectly with the shamrock coffee cozy! They are quick to make. The shamrocks are made by crocheting around the posts of stitches below. What a sweet St. Patrick’s Day Beanie and a matching Coffee Cozy. Those shamrocks are not appliques, but are crocheted as you make the hat. No sewing is needed.

St. Patrick’s Day Beanie Crochet Pattern

 

Supplies:

I used Red Heart Super Saver in White, Paddy Green & Lime. You may use any worsted weight yarn in your colorway of choice. Approx. 200 yds MC & 150 yds. CC

Hook:

H/8/5mm

Gauge:  

4” x 4”= 8 rows DC x 14 DC stitches. Shamrocks are 2”w x 3”h

Special Stitch:

Floating Shamrock

Leaf 1: Turn your work just enough to complete the following stitches around the post of the dc below, going down the post, (SLP ST, CH 4, TRBL, HDC, TRBL, CH 4, SLP ST) 1st leaf of the shamrock has been made.

Leaf 2: Turn your work just enough to execute the second leaf, under the top two loops of the DC round below. (Please refer to picture tutorial) 2nd leaf (SLP ST, CH 4, TRBL, HDC, TRBL, CH 4, SLP ST)

Leaf 3: Then you will turn your work just enough so that you can complete the following stitches around the post of the next dc going up the post, (SLP ST, CH 4, TRBL, HDC, TRBL, CH 4, SLP ST) 3rd leaf of shamrock is made.

Cross over and close the base of the shamrock by executing a SLP ST in the beg. SLP ST of the 1st leaf. MAKE SURE TO SC DIRECTLY AT THE BASE OF THE SHAMROCK YOU JUST MADE, WHICH WILL BE THE DC THAT HOLDS THE 3RD LEAF OF THE SHAMROCK, proceed to make the stem

STEM: CH 6, SLP ST in 2nd CH from hook and in each remaining CH’s.

MAKE SURE TO SC DIRECTLY AT THE BASE OF THE SHAMROCK YOU JUST MADE, WHICH WILL BE THE DC THAT HOLDS THE 3RD LEAF OF THE SHAMROCK

join w/ = join with
 
slp st = Slip Stitch
    
ch = Chain 
 
sc = Single Crochet

hdc = Half  Double Crochet

dc = Double Crochet

trb = Treble Crochet

bp hdc = Back Post Half Double Crochet

fp hdc = Front Post Half Double Crochet

nxt = Next 

 *  * = Repeat between the stars the number of times stated;  x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on;

in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch to complete stitch or sequence of stitches stated.

MC = Main Color

CC = Contrasting Color

Beginning Chains do not count as stitch unless otherwise noted.

Shaping your shamrocks after they are made is fun, and you can stiffen them a little with Spray Starch. Place paper or some kind of barrier behind the shamrocks, and spray them, smoothing them into place.

Adult Small/Med. BEANIE

Using MC; ch 3 join in ring or use Magic Circle

Round 1: 

ch 2, 13 dc in ring; join w/slp st to beg. dc; ch 2 (13 dc)

Round 2: 

2 dc in joining st; 2 dc in each st around; join w/slp st to beg. dc; ch 2 (26 dc)

Round 3:

dc in joining st; 2 dc in nxt st; * dc in nxt st, 2 dc in nxt st;* 12x; join w/slp st to beg. dc; CH 2 (39 dc)

Round 4:

dc in joining st; dc in nxt st; 2 dc in nxt st; * dc in nxt st (2x), 2 dc  in nxt st;* 12x; join w/slp st to beg. dc; ch 2 (52 dc)

Round 5:

dc in joining st; dc in nxt st (2x); 2 dc in nxt st; * dc in nxt st (3x), 2 dc in nxt st;* 12x; join w/slp st to beg. dc; ch 2  (65 dc) Measurement across 6”

Round 6:

dc in joining st, and in each st around; Drop MC and pull up CC at the last pull through at the last dc;  join w/slp st to beg. dc; ch 1 (65 dc)

Round 7:

sc in joining st, and in each st around; Drop CC, using MC join w/slp st to beg. sc; ch 2 (65 sc)

Round 8:

dc in joining st, and in each st around; join w/slp st to beg. dc; ch 2 (65 dc)

Round 9:

dc in joining st and in each st around; Drop MC and pull up CC at the last pull through at the last dc; join w/slp st in beg. dc; ch 1 (65 dc)

The following round is unique. You will be executing a sc in each st., and you will be crocheting around the posts of the previous round to make the floating shamrocks. Please refer to the Floating Shamrock Tutorial.

Round 10: Floating Shamrock Stitch Round

sc in joining st and in nxt st 10x; FLOATING SHAMROCK STITCH *sc in nxt st 13x,  FLOATING SHAMROCK STITCH, * 4x; sc in nxt st (2x), Drop CC and using MC join w/slp st in beg. sc; ch 2 (65 sc & 5 Shamrocks)

Round 11&12:

Repeat Round 8 & 9

Round 13: 2nd Floating Shamrock Stitch Round

sc in joining st and in nxt st 4x; FLOATING SHAMROCK STITCH *sc in nxt st 13x,  FLOATING SHAMROCK STITCH, * 4x; sc in nxt st 8x, Drop CC and using MC join w/slp st in beg. sc; cut CC leaving a tail to weave in later; ch 2 (65 sc & 5 Shamrocks)

If you would like to make this a slouchy hat, please repeat Rounds 8-10

Round 14 & 15:

dc in joining st, and in each st around; join w/slp st to beg. dc; ch 2
(65 dc)

Round 16 – 18:

bp hdc around 1st dc; fp hdc; *bp hdc in nxt st, fp hdc in nxt st;* complete sequence between * * around; join w/slp st in 2nd ch of ch 2; ch 2. Do not ch  2 at end of Round 18, end off and weave in ends.

Ending Measurements (All measurements are approximate for you use as a guideline)
Circumference =19.5-20” Height = 8.5’-9”
