The heart stitch at the bottom of the crochet chicken sweater is easy.
I fell in love with the heart stitch in February of 2022. Watch the videos in this playlist to see all of the different designs that were made during the “From The Heart” Promotion in January of that year.
It won’t take you long to crochet this chicken sweater.
Once you become familiar with the crochet pattern, the chicken sweaters will fly off your hook. You will be able to make several 2 or 3 in one evening.

I really didn’t know that crochet chicken sweaters were a thing?
Apparently they are an important aide to a chicken that is molting. A few years ago my friend, Miss Jenny, asked me to make a chicken sweater for her chicken Sparkle. I refused until she convinced me that her chicken needed a sweater. I made a couple of chicken sweater designs. Afterward I wrote the pattern and sent the design off to my testers. They were thrilled and I have been selling crochet chicken sweater patterns, since 2015.
Here is what you will need to create this chicken sweater, that has a heart stitch.
Any Worsted No. 4 weight of yarn. Approx. 150 yds. Small amount of a contrasting color.
Hook:
H – 8/5.00mm Gauge: 4”x 4” = 12 SC across x 15 rows height
Supplies (Optional):
Large Buttons of choice 1” or larger buttons are recommended

SLP ST = Slip Stitch;
CH = Chain; SC = Single Crochet;
HDC = Half Double Crochet;
DC = Double Crochet

nxt = Next; * * = Repeat between the stars the number of times stated;
x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on;
in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch, or around the post of the next stitch to complete the sequence

The day she was trying to convince me to crochet Sparkle a chicken sweater we were standing in the center aisle after a church service. Folks were milling around us, and I firmly said, “I am not going to make a Chicken Sweater!”. Everyone started laughing at us and they joined in on the conversation. They helped her convince me to design a chicken sweater for Sparkle.
This story with my church family didn’t stop there.
The chicken sweaters that I designed were pretty cute, so they went off to my testers! They were thrilled and they took photos of the sweaters on their chickens. When the crochet patterns were listed in my RAVELRY and ETSY store, they started selling! I happily told my church family about their success.
They all know that ETSY will ring a big Cha Ching on your phone when you sell something. Now when they hear a Cha Ching…they will start laughing and ask, did you just sell a Chicken Sweater Pattern?
Next a bestie from church asked me for a chicken sweater.
I told her that I had a modified chicken sweater. It was a combination of the Schoolgirl chicken sweater and a Flouncy Chicken Sweater, she said she wanted it. Here’s the story, another friend of ours at church, named Jim, had a chicken, that had big legs.
Jim kept teasing DeeDee and telling her he had named that chicken after her, because of it’s legs. She took that chicken sweater, put electrical tape on it to make two capital “D”‘s, and put it on DeeDee the chicken! When this photo arrived I laughed and laughed! That is Jim holding Dee Dee the chicken.
Crochet chicken hats are next on the list of things to design.
Crocheting unique things is fun, and I will used the heart stitch to design a chicken hat. Another crochet designer, Uniquely More, made chicken sweaters for rescue chickens using my flouncy crochet chicken sweater pattern. She posted some great photos on her project page.
