Why This is the EASIEST Baby Quilt for Beginners

One of the reasons this quick sew and turn baby quilt method is because the flannel fabric and fleece mold together so well, which keeps the fabric from moving and shifting so much.

This beginner baby quilt tutorial includes:

  • No quilt binding
  • No complicated piecing
  • No batting layers
  • Very little machine quilting
  • Simple straight stitching
  • Soft beginner-friendly fabrics

The fleece and flannel will cling together. Not only is it cuddly, but this cling makes it easier to work with.

I think this tutorial is helpful if you have just learned or you are learning to sew.

Supplies for This Quick Sew & Turn Baby Quilt

You will need:

  • 1 yard of fleece
  • 1 yard of quality flannel
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread (I used Coats and Clarks Dual Duty)
  • Ballpoint sewing needle
  • Straight pins
  • Safety pins
  • Rotary cutter and ruler (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Warm iron

Why Quality Flannel Matters

I highly recommend using a quality flannel for this project. Good flannel becomes softer after washing and doesn’t wrinkle like the “Snuggle” flannel we used to buy at JoAnns.

Be sure to prewash and dry your flannel before you begin this project because flannel can shrink.

How to Prepare Fabric for a Beginner Baby Quilt

Before sewing your quilt together, it is important to “square the flannel fabric”.

A fabric cut from the store is not square. This step is essential and is important in the construction of the quilt.

Tips for Squaring Fabric

First the Selvedge Needs To Be Removed

Using scissors or a rotary cutter:

  • The selvadge is easy to see and feel, I just eyeball it and cut it off
  • The lines don’t have to be exact here as it will be squared up later
  • I like to recycle the Selvedge cut’s in the garden to tie up Tomato Plants

The Video Tutorial Will Show You A Method of Folding and Cutting to Square the Ends and Sides Of The Flannel

When folding your fabric:

  • Smooth out wrinkles
  • If you see a ripple at the fold push it out to the opposite side
  • Remove any other ripples you see by patting and pushing with your hands

  • Fold the flannel one more time, then use the clear ruler and the marks on the Olfa mat, to guide you in cutting the end evenly.
  • Now that you have cut the ends, unfold the fabric one more time
  • Now fold in the opposite direction
  • It is time to even up and square up the selvadge edge.
  • Match the even ends together Now use the clear ruler and the rotary cutter to square up the Selvedge edge with a rotary cutter.

This folding and “trimming to square your fabric” method also works beautifully for knit fabric sewing projects.

It’s time to Sew the EASIEST Baby Quilt for Beginners

Once your flannel is trimmed and the sides and ends are even, it is time to place it on the fleece. Use the flannel as a guide and cut the fleece to match the flannel.

Beginner Sew & Turn Quilt Instructions

Step 1: Place Fabrics Right Sides Together

Lay the fleece and flannel with right sides facing each other.

Step 2: Pin Around the Edges

Pin carefully, especially around corners and edges. You can use clips, but they can fall off easily when moving everything around to get to the sewing machine. Pins help hold things in place better.

Step 3: Sew Around the Quilt

Using a 3/8-inch seam allowance:

  • Sew around all four sides
  • Leave a generous opening for turning (6″-8″)

Step 4: Trimming The Seam Allowances and Clip The Corners

Trim the seam allowance and clip corners carefully to reduce bulk.

Step 5: Turn the Quilt Right Side Out

Pull the blanket gently through the opening.

Step 6: Push Out Corners

Use a turning tool or blunt point to gently shape the corners.

Step 7: Roll and Finger Press the Edges & Pin The Opening Closed

This rolling and pinning step creates a beautiful finished rolled edge.

Step 8: Top Stitch Around The Quilt

Use a slightly longer stitch length and sew all the way around the outer edge.

This topstitching:

  • Closes the opening
  • Adds stability
  • Creates a polished finish

Easy Quilting Ideas for Beginner Baby Quilts

One of the best parts of this easy baby quilt tutorial is that the quilting is very simple.

Using safety pins, pin the quilt together from the inside out. Keeping everything smooth.

Instead of detailed quilt blocks or heavy quilting patterns, random straight stitching lines are used to stabilize the blanket.

Simple Machine Quilting Tips

Use Random Straight Lines

Straight lines help:

  • Hold the layers together
  • Prevent shifting
  • Add texture without puckering

Avoid Closed Shapes

Avoid:

  • Large circles
  • Complete squares
  • Tight outlining around characters

These can sometimes create ripples in soft fleece-backed quilts.

Roll the Quilt Into A Tube While Sewing

Rolling the quilt makes it easier to manage under the sewing machine.

This is especially helpful for beginners.

A Handmade Baby Quilt Makes a Beautiful Gift

There is something incredibly comforting about a handmade baby blanket.

This quick sew and turn baby quilt is:

  • Soft and cozy
  • Beginner friendly
  • Budget friendly
  • Fast to complete
  • Perfect for baby showers
  • Great for charity sewing projects

And because it works up quickly, you can easily customize colors and prints for different seasons, nurseries, or themes.
