But not so fast… is it always that easy?
In this post, I’ll talk with you about how to Sew A Minky Baby Quilt using my simple sew-and-turn method. The video tutorial will explain a bit of the differences you will find between a Flannel and Fleece Baby Quilt.
Minky is incredibly soft and makes beautiful baby gifts, but it behaves very differently than fleece or cotton.
When you sew a Minky baby quilt, you may notice:
- The fabric stretches slightly while sewing
- Layers can shift more easily
- Pinning becomes very important
- It requires a little more patience and control
The video tutorial will walk you through exactly how I handled those challenges so your finished quilt still turns out smooth, soft, and beautiful.
Supplies Needed for This Minky Baby Quilt
The video tutorial and the instructions below will help you make this Minky Baby Quilt.
To Sew A Minky Baby Quilt, you will need:
- Minky Dot fabric (1 yd/60″ wide – backing)
- Flannel fabric (1 yd/45″ wide – front)
- Coordinating thread
- Scissors or rotary cutter
- Self Healing Cutting Mat
- Sewing machine
- Strait Pins or Magic Clips (I prefer strait pins for this project)
- Iron (for flannel only—do not press Minky directly)
- Measuring tools
Tip: Use a lint roller to pick up the fuzzies after you cut the minky fabric.
Abbreviated Step-by-Step: How to Sew A Minky Baby Quilt
1. Layer Your Fabrics
Square up the flannel and use as the pattern to cut out for the quilt.
Place your minky right side up and your flannel right side down, matching edges carefully.Photo here
Smooth everything from the center outward to reduce shifting.
2. Sew Around the Edges
Sew around the perimeter, leaving a small opening for turning.

Go slowly—Minky can shift slightly under the presser foot. pic 2
3. Turn, Trim and Press
Turn your quilt right side out through the opening. photo
Trim the 5/8″ seams to 3/8″. pic 1
Gently push out the corners. pic 2
Press the edges but avoid pressing directly on the Minky.
4. Roll and Pin The Edges Closed
Roll the seams and pin around the entire edge of the quilt, closing the opening as you go. pic 1
Topstitch around the entire quilt, closing the opening as you go. pic 2
This helps the quilt lay flat and gives it a finished look.
5. Pin Before Quilting
Lay your quilt flat on a large surface minky side up. Pat from the center outward to smooth everything.
Then use pins to baste the layers:
- Use a ruler to place pins where you would like. Using them as a guide to direct your machine quilting.
- I place pins (north to south) in lines 6″ apart
- Then a row of pins below that were offset the first row and were 6″ apart.
- There ended up being 3 rows.
- You can place pins wherever you would like to direct your quilting
- However don’t machine quilt in a circle or close box as it will create puckers in the fabric.You can watch the marking and quilting technique Right Here.
6. Machine Quilt
Add simple quilting lines or stitch-in-the-ditch to hold everything together.
This step brings the whole project together and gives it a professional finish.

Final Thoughts on Sewing a Minky Baby Quilt
I am very happy with how this blanket turned out.
There were a few challenges along the way, but nothing I couldn’t handle with experience and patience. I now understand how Minky behaves in this sew-and-turn method, and I would absolutely make this again.
