Oh it’s that time of year to be wearing hearts on everything you own.
Little girls bundled up in fancy coats, snow is on the ground, little boys are pulling pig tails and throwing snowballs at their intended Valentine. Sweet visions of yesteryear.
This 1920’s inspired Valentine’s cloche is designed to be worn by children. I had so much fun figuring out how to add the floating heart stitch. I really love texture, and I think making hearts by working around the post is fun. No need to applique theses hearts as they are worked as you make the hat. Fun Fun Fun!

Floating Heart Stitch
The floating heart stitch is easy and fun. You execute one half of the heart, when you crochet down one post, and the second half if made by executing a series of crochet stitches going up the post beside the first half of the heart. It’s easy!
Arrows point to the post where you will execute the first half of your floating heart.
This next picture is showing the direction to insert your hook, to execute your crochet stitches while you are going down the post.
Crochet this sequence going DOWN the post. (SC, HDC, DC, 2 TRB, CH 1, SLP ST) you will have to shove the stitches a little bit to get all of those stitches around the post. This is the view that you see when you are crocheting. It’s a completed 1st half.
The first half of the heart is completed. Now that you are at the top of the heart, let’s take note of the post beside the 1/2 heart. There is an arrow pointing to that post. That post is where you will crochet the second half of the floating heart.
The first stitch we will crochet around the next post is a loose slip stitch.
Now it is time to build the second half. Execute the following stitches going UP the post. (CH 4, TRB, DC, HDC, SC) ch4 counts as treble st.
Both halves of the heart are complete, but the heart is broken. We must fix this. We don’t want a broken heart!
Cross over and insert your hook into the beg. SC of the first half of the floating heart. This is the first step to fix your broken heart.
Now execute a slip stitch to close the bottom of the heart.
Continuing with the slip stitch.
The heart is no longer broken, but you aren’t finished yet.
You need to find the stitch that is directly behind the heart. It is a somewhat hidden and not so easy to find. The arrow is pointing to it.
Insert the hook into that stitch, then execute a SC. It is important to find this stitch. It will throw your stitch count off if you miss this stitch.
Now the SC is complete.
All finished with the heart and you can move on.
