Shabby chic hats are easy to make, and are especially easy when crochet is involved. Use an antique white yarn to crochet the hat, and choose shabby chic fabrics and antique looking trims to embellish. I have a free crochet pattern available or can purchase an ad free pdf on Etsy. About Those Shabby Trimmings
It’s easy to apply a few shabby pieces of fabric backed with felt using your favorite embroidery stitches for a chic worn look. I am thinking crazy quilt embroidery stitches, but that is advanced for me so I use a prick stitch.
We can’t forget the bows…oh the bows. Small and sweet satin bows or big and fluffy burlap or linen bows. Bows, bows and more bows.
How To Prepare The Shabby Chic Fabric Patches
Pic 1: After you have chosen your fabric, cut it as close to the grain as possible, cut in 1 ¾” square. (Larger squares are harder to mold to the round part of the hat. When using larger squares move them down the hat away from the crown of the hat)
Pic 2: Remove the threads from the fabric squares. Approx. ¼”
Pin your fabric squares together, in the position you would like them to be on your hat or diaper cover. Using your pinned patches as a guide, place them on a piece of felt and cut around the patches. Choose a piece of felt that coordinates with the color of your fabric, as a corner may peek through after some wear.
Pic 1: Using the felt patch as a pattern, cut a piece of Heat n Bond, Wonder Under, Stitch Witchery, or any kind of iron on adhesive.
Pic 2: Then trim 1/8” off the adhesive patch.
How To Apply The Shabby Chic Fabric To The Hat
Pic 1: Take adhesive patch & fabric to ironing board. With hot, NO STEAM iron, iron the patch to the BACK of the fabric squares, removing the pin at the last minute.
Pic 2: Let cool and peel the paper away.
Pic 3: This will leave the adhesive on the fabric.
Pic 1: Place fabric adhesive/glue side down on felt patch and TURN OVER. While at the ironing board, with felt FACE UP, or fabric RIGHT SIDE UP, iron with hot iron, with an up and down motion, not leaving the iron on for a great length of time, as the felt may shrink. Definitely do not use steam!
Pic 2: While shabby fabric/felt patch is still warm, mold it to the round crown of the country hat, in place desired.
Pic 3: Let cool, and then you can pin and sew it in place.
Sewing The Shabby Fabric To The Hat
I use the Prick Stitch, but you can use a fancy, crazy quilt embroidery stitch. When using the prick stitch, insert the needle from underneath then take the tiniest stitch back. Repeat the prick stitch, evenly spacing the stitches while catching the edges of the felt.
Sewing Antique Lace On To The Shabby Chic Hat
Pic 1: Sewing lace on a hat will hinder a crochet hat’s ability to stretch, so you must pin the lace and ribbon trim on to the hat, while stretching the hat.
Pic 2: The lace should be loose but as you sew it on the hat.
Pic 3: While sewing the lace on the hat, keep the stretch happening to the hat.
Sewing And Gathering Cotton Lace With Ribbon
Pic 1: I love the look of the this wide country cotton lace that has satin ribbon running through the beading. You can use the satin ribbon to gather the lace. Then just pin it in place on the hat, using the same method of stretching the hat, as instructed above.
Pic 2: Sew lace and ribbon in place, making sure to stretch the hat, and also catching the satin ribbon in an an area where the stitches won’t be seen. This keeps the ribbon from getting caught and being pulled on.
Sew a bow or bows into place desired
Pic 1: I love the look of fabric patches half way around the stem.
Pic 2: Then add a big
fat burlap bow opposite the shabby fabric patches.
Pic 3: I also love how a little satin pull tie bow at the brim can add a sweet antique look to the Shabby Country Apple Hat.
