This St. Patrick’s Day crochet tutu dress is so cute and quick to crochet. Add strips of tulle to the bodice for a full and princess look for your little Irish baby. The shamrock is added by crocheting around the posts of stitches in the row below, no need to sew an applique to the front of the bodice.
I sometimes use affiliate links in my posts. This won’t cost you anything, but will help offset the cost of yarn and other supplies needed, so that I can continue bringing you crochet patterns and craft ideas. Thank you so much for your support.

EDGING INSTRUCTIONS FOR BODICE of Crochet Tutu Dress
When you are finished with the fans, continue to crochet up the back edge. Continue around the neck, and down the opposite back edge. You will do this three times, back and forth, shaping the neck shoulder area, and also adding button loops for the button closure. You may have noticed that the neckline is wide and will need a little shaping. Follow instructions below.
Please switch back to an “H” Hook
STEP 1:
This next step requires an “H” hook. Proceed to SC up the edge of the bodice, evenly spacing your stitches. Stitch count is not important at this point, but too many stitches will make a rippled and bumpy edge.
Execute 3 stitches at the corner. SC around the neck line,
STEP 2:
After finishing the neckline, make sure to execute 2 to 3 stitches at the corner, proceed to SC down the opposite back bodice edge. Do not sc down the edge of the fans, CH 1, and turn, and proceed to SC back up the same bodice edge.
STEP 3:
Do not to forget to execute 3 SC at the corner. Skip a stitch every 6th or 7th stitch at the shoulder area, as this area needs to be curved more. Do not skip or decrease across the front of the neckline.
STEP 4:
After finishing the neckline, continue down the opposite back edge, remembering not to stitch into the fan edge. Turn and SC back up the edge of the bodice, this is the third time adding an edge to the side of the bodice. Remember to execute 2 to 3 stitches at the corner.
IMPORTANT CHANGE IN THE NECKLINE AREA: When you reach the neck line, *CH 3, skp ST, SLP ST in nxt ST* Repeat around to next Corner, do not execute 2 or 3 stitches at the corner. Instead execute *SC, CH 2, SC in same stitch* this is the first button loop.
STEP 5:
You will need to mark where you want your button loops to be. Use a ruler to mark so that your buttons will be evenly spaced.
STEP 6:
Use straight pins, a piece of yarn, or stitch markers to mark the spot where you want the buttons to be placed.
SC down the edge. Execute the following sequence when you reach a marker, CH 1 (CH 2 if the buttons are big) SC in nxt ST. Continue until you are at the end of the bodice, fasten off and weave in ends.
BUTTON APPLICATION
Adding buttons to a crocheted item can be rather tricky. I have found a shortcut that may help you.
STEP 1:
Place the buttons on the button placket, in the place you desire…checking first to see if the button will go through the holes that you have made for them. Next hold the buttons in place by using scotch tape to hold them in place, just like the Watermelon and Candy Corn shoes.
STEP 2:
Keeping the tape in place, proceed to sew the buttons in place. Remove the tape once you feel the button is secure.
CAP SLEEVE INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1:
Wrong Side Facing You. Join in the right corner of the underarm; SC in joining ST and in the next 2, or what number is left in your underarm CH.
STEP 2:
Skip the HDC and SLP ST under CH 4 Arch. This will round out the armscye.
STEP 3:
Proceed to execute the Row 2 (Fan Base) of the “Fan Lace Edge” in all arches.
STEP 4:
When you are out of arches, drop down and SLP ST to the beg. SC in the underarm area; Turn
STEP 5:
CH 1; proceed to execute Row 3 of Fan Lace; Turn
STEP 6:
Proceed to execute Row 4, Fasten off and weave in ends.
TUTU INSTRUCTIONS
The bodice is perfect to add tulle for a sweet tutu dress. Below is an estimated amount of tulle for the tutu dress.
20″ long strips (newborn) 21″ long strips (3 mo) of tulle 6” wide. 55-60 yds of precut tulle on a roll, or 5.0 yds from the bolt
Dress length: 14”-14.5” from center neck
Step 1:
Cut three 20″ or 21″ long strips & fold them in half.
Step 2:
With the wrong side of the bodice facing you, thread tulle strips into the arch row, and tie them evenly around an arch. Be careful to keep everything smooth so that fan trim does not curl up. You want it to lay as smooth as possible
Step3:
Continue this process around the entire bodice.
Step4:
The button placket area in the back can leave a gap, and if you would like for this area to be closed, use two pieces of tulle and insert them in the very bottom, as pictured below.
Step5:
You can cover the tulle knots by running a strand of tulle or ribbon as a sash. Picture below shows the strategic points to put the tulle under, in order to tie it in the back, so the tulle won’t ride up. Two points in the front, and at the waist I also like to add embellishments at this point.
