The Over Brook baby blanket has a unique set of stitches. It is inspired by the crochet stitches that are in the Over Brook Poncho. You will see new stitches in the first part of the baby blanket. I also eliminated one set of lacey stitches. This is part of a free CAL, but if you don’t want to wait, you can purchase the ad free pdf at RAVELRY and ETSY.
Designing the Over Brook Baby Blanket was a joy!
In order to achieve the color placement that I wanted to present. Two cakes of yarn had to be cut apart, and all of the matching colors were wound into one ball. It was important to follow the color order that was in the first cake, which wasn’t hard at all.. There is a Live video at Krissy’s Over The Mountain Crochet and Crafts that gives even more detail. There is a snippet of information about how to use worsted weight yarn too.
The yarn I used was Mandala Sparkle in the colorway Draco.
I used an H crochet hook. I think it’s the right hook for a (3) DK weight yarn. Imagine this in a solid colored yarn, using a (4) worsted weight yarn and a J hook. Step it up a notch with scrumptious velvet (5) bulky weight yarn. That would bring this design to a whole new level of beauty. The texture would be amazing. I recommend a K hook for that project.
There are many other yarns that can be used for the Over Brook Baby Blanket.
The Crochet Along is underway now, and a few have been posting their makes. Here is a link if you would like to see others creations using this pattern. You will see some beginnings that are using Mandala Ombre, (4) or worsted/aran weight yarn. They are using a larger hook, which is the recommendation for this design.
The transition rounds in this crochet pattern, is the best place to change up color.
When using a solid colored yarn, the sky is limit on how to add color. Use all 7 rounds to present a contrasting color, or use the Cross st, or Xst round only. I can think of so many different ways to add contrasting colors to this baby blanket. Wouldn’t the Over Brook Baby Blanket be beautiful as a Christmas Blanket?
Information will be given on “how to add more rounds” to the Over Brook Blanket, as the CAL progresses.
If you are using a (4) worsted or aran weight yarn, you may want to add more rounds to the stitch sequences. The stitch counts for the sc round, that precedes the new stitch sequence, will be added shortly. This will help you spread your wings a little to create a masterpiece of your own making.

Stitch Key & Terminology:
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
hdc = half double crochet
trb = treble crochet
ch = chain
slp st = slip stitch
skp = skip
in sp. = execute st. by going under the ch that is creating the sp. Do not execute st. directly into a ch
sp = space
nxt = next
beg. = beginning
st = stitch
repeat between * * = repeat the sequence that is between the * * as many times as stated
x = times, will follow number, example repeat sequence 8 x or 8 times
( ) = execute the sequence between the parenthesis, the number of times stated
prev. = Previous
peak = the center stitch, of the prev. shell made.
inc = increase; execute 2 st’s in the stitch indicated in the pattern.
NOTES:
1. The pattern is written in sentences. This can be a help to keep your place, in the pattern. Example is below.
sentence 1: beginning that will include the first half of the first side
sentence 2: complete writing of the following three sides. (You will be repeating sentence 2 3x)
sentence 3: includes the last portion of the pattern
2. This pattern includes charts that are not inclusive of every round. The charts are self-explanatory and are there as a guide only.
3. I have given some rounds a title. If I had to put my work on hold, this helped me find my place in the pattern, when I was able to work on it again.
4. The stitches that are created when executing a “V” stitch at the corners, will count as a stitch. Excluding the chain space. The end stitch count will reflect this.
5. As the pattern progresses the end stitch count will change. It may reflect the stitches that are on each side, or stitches/patterns that are accounted for at the beginning of the pattern may be eliminated.
6. If you are using solid colors, a great place to execute color changes, is in the transition area. These are the sc, dc, sc, and Xst rounds.
7. If you choose to use worsted weight yarn, I recommend a J/6.0mm crochet hook.
Yarn:
4 cakes of Mandala Sparkle. Light Weight #3; Colorway “Draco” was used.
Each cake has 3.5 oz/328 yds; 94% Acrylic, 6% Metallic Poly
I cut the last two cakes at each color change, to get the width of color that was desired. Videos will explain this.
Crochet Hook:
H 8/5.00mm (If using a worsted weight yarn I recommend going up two hook sizes)
Below is a video that demonstrates Part 4: As each part is released, I will change this video.

Rachel says
Help with the Over Brook Baby a blanket!!
I’m so lost 😭 I’ve finished round 12 of single crochets and you’re suppose to end with 117 stitches the pattern says. But right after it says 117, it says you should have a multiple of 6+ 5 to do the shells in the next round and 117 isn’t a multiple of 6+5? So everytime i do the shell round, I get two 5dc shells (not the 3 it calls for) and then i have 4 stitches until the dcV and not two which is the number you are suppose to skip. What am I doing wrong?! 😢
