Free Crochet Chemo Cap Pattern in 4 Sizes | Easy Velvet Yarn Hat

Looking for a simple crochet chemo cap to make and donate? This one is soft, comfortable, and easy to crochet once you get the hang of velvet yarn.

The pattern includes 4 sizes, from approximately 5 years through Adult XL, so you can make one for just about anyone.

This crochet chemo cap is designed to be simple enough to make while still having a little something special around the band. The free crochet patterns can be found if you keep scrolling and the ad free pdf is at RAVELRY or ETSY.
A purple and pink chemo hat is in the upper right corner and a dark gray and Cream hat is in the lower left corner.

The complete free crochet pattern below includes four sizes, from approximately 5 years through Adult Extra Large, and it’s found down below.

Whether you’re donating to a cancer center or making one for someone going through treatment, I hope this pattern makes it easy to give a handmade gift.

A Simple Crochet Chemo Cap with a Beautiful Ridged Band

This is an easy-to-repeat design is but simple doesn’t have to mean plain.

The band is where this crochet chemo hat gets its little bit of personality.

I added a section of ridges using my High Back Post Half Double Crochet, a stitch I have used in many of my crochet designs.

A Pretty Ridged Band

The band is made using my High Back Post Half Double Crochet, a stitch I use in many of my designs.

I love the way it creates a defined ridge without the look of a traditional Back Post Half Double Crochet.

Never made this stitch? No problem! I’ve created a video tutorial to walk you through it.

Choosing Your Velvet Yarn

This pattern uses #6 velvet chenille yarn.

I love Bernat Velvet for its softness, especially for someone who has lost their hair.

If you’re making several hats to donate, Premier Just Chenille from Dollar Tree is another option. It isn’t quite as soft, but it works well and can make donating multiple hats more affordable.

One Tip Before You Start

Velvet yarn can make your stitches hard to see because of its fluffy loft. Good, bright lighting will make a big difference!

Once you get used to working with it, you may find that you love those soft, plush stitches.

Make a Chemo Cap to Donate

This pattern is completely free in all 4 sizes, making it a great one to keep handy when you want to crochet something to donate.

Make one for a friend or family member going through chemotherapy or radiation, or make several to donate to your local cancer center.

Please check with your local facility before donating to make sure they accept handmade chemo caps.

Need a Snugger Fit?

If you’re making this hat for someone who has lost their hair and wants a tighter-fitting cap, go down one hook size.
