This crochet sunflower potholder is so pretty and unique. It is crocheted using a dishcloth cotton yarn. The center of the sunflower has a lot of texture, and those flower petals are easy to crochet. There is a coordinating Sunflower dishcloth that has a scrubber on the back. I also had to design a Sunflower Coaster out of the same cotton yarn. Your table will look like a field of sunflowers. If you would like to add a little bit more heat protection to this hotpad, cut a circle of Insulbrite and put it into the center, before you sew the back on to the sunflower. This hotpad has two layers of cotton yarn. It is very thick. Insulbrite will ramp up the heat protection qualities of the hotpad.

You will love the crocheted leaves that are on the sunflower potholder.
The leaves are full and have a little ripple. You can group them together as I did the gold sunflower hotpad. Sewing two leaves together, then sewing them between the back of the sunflower and it’s petals, at 2:00 & 7:00 oclock, or 3:00 & 9:00 oclock. You can add just one leaf or none at all. The leaves are totally optional.

Crochet Sunflower Potholder Pattern
Yarn used:
(4) cotton dishcloth yarn. I used what was in my stash. Peaches and Cream in gold, yellow or orange.(approx. 70 yds) Dark Taupe (appprox. 50 yds) Any dishcloth yarn is suitable.
Crochet Hook:
H/8 5.00mm
Stitch Guide:
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
trb = treble crochet
ch = chain
slp st = slip stitch
sp = space
nxt = next
beg. = beginning
st = stitch
skp = skip
repeat between * * = repeat the sequence that is between the * * as many times as stated
x = times, will follow number, example repeat sequence 8 x or 8 times
yo = yarn over
Special Stitch:
mp = Mini Popcorn = insert hook, yo pull up loop in nxt sc, using that loop only and leaving original loop on hook, ch3, yo, pull loop through both loops on hook. When making the next sc, push the ch to the front to create a mini popcorn.
Round 1: Center of the Sunflower (Use brown yarn)
ch3 (or ch4) & join in ring; ch1, 7 sc in ring; join w/slp st to beg. sc (7 sc)
Round 2:
ch1, sc & mp in joining st, *sc & mp in nxt st;* 6x; join w/slp st to beg. sc, pushing the mp to the front. (14 st’s)
Round 3:
ch1, sc in joining st; 2 sc in nxt st; *sc in nxt st, 2 sc in nxt st;* 6x; join w/slp st to beg. sc (21 st’s)
Round 4:
ch1, sc in joining st, mp in nxt; sc & mp in nxt st; *sc in nxt st, mp in nxt st, sc & mp in nxt st:* 6x; join w/slp st to beg. sc (28 st’s)
Round 5:
ch1, sc in joining st; sc in nxt st’s; 2 sc in nxt st; *sc in nxt 2 st’s, 2 sc in nxt st;* 6x; join w/slp st to beg. sc (35 st’s)
Round 6:
ch1, sc in joining st, mp in nxt; sc in nxt st, mp in nxt, sc & mp in nxt st; *(sc in nxt st, mp in nxt st) 2x sc & mp in nxt st:* 6x; drop brown and pull up front flower petal color at the join w/slp st to beg. sc (42 st’s) 4″ across
Round 7: Flower Petal Round
*ch9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in nxt ch; hdc in nxt 3 ch’s, dc in last 3 ch’s; slp st in nxt st;* repeat between the * * completely around, end off (42 flower petals)
Back Of Sunflower (Use Green)
Round 1:
ch3, (or ch4) & join in a ring, ch2, 12 dc in the ring, join w/slp st to beg. dc (12 dc)
Round 2:
ch2, 2 dc in joining st and in each st around, join w/slp st to beg. dc (24 dc)
Round 3:
ch2, dc in joining st, 2 dc in nxt st; *dc in nxt st, 2 dc in nxt st;* 11x; join w/slp st to beg. dc (36 dc) 4″ across
Round 4: Tiny leaves for the back of the sunflower
*ch5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in nxt ch, dc in nxt ch, tr in last ch; skp 2 st’s, slp st in nxt;* 12x; ch15, slp st back at the base of the ch 15; fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing on the front of the sunflower; 9 1/4″ across from petal tip to petal tip.
Sew the back of the Sunflower to the front of the Sunflower (A photo tutorial can be found in the ad free pdf)
1. Pin the back to the front of the sunflower. Wrong Sides together
2. Thread the long yarn tail into the eye of a yarn needle.
3. Sew the back of the sunflower using the top two loops, of the dc stitches that were made in round three.
4. Start sewing and whipping the back to the front, making sure that the green yarn does not show on the front side.
5. Periodically check to make sure the green isn’t showing on the front.
Leaf Crochet Pattern for the Sunflower potholder (Optional) Make 2 or more leaves
First Side:
leave a few inches of yarn, before making the slip knot. This few inches of yarn will be used to sew the leaf on to the hotpad.
ch13; sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in nxt ch, 2 dc in nxt ch; *2 trb in nxt ch* 6x; 2 dc in nxt ch; hdc in nxt ch; 3sc in last ch;
Opposite Side:
after making the 3 sc in the last st, you should be heading down the opposite side of the leaf. Place the following stitches in the remaining loops of the previous chains used.
hdc in nxt ch, 2 dc in nxt ch; *2 trb in nxt ch* 6x; 2 dc in nxt ch; hdc in nxt ch; hdc in last ch, join w/slp st to 1st sc made, end off and sew leaf under the sunflower petals, attaching it to the tiny leaves at back of the sunflower.
Sewing the Leaves On The Sunflower Hotpad (A photo tutorial can be found on the ad free pdf)
1. Pull back the flower petals and find the small leaves that are on the back of the sunflower. The end of the leaves will be sandwiched in between the petals and the little leave.
2. When the leaves are positioned where you want them, pin them in place.
3. Turn the hotpad over. locate the small leaves on the back. Make sure they are positioned over the leaves. Pin them in place if needed.
4. Thread the beginning yarn tail into the eye of a yarn needle and begin sewing the leaves to the small leaves.
5. Turn the hotpad back over. Pin the flower petals that are over the leaves in place. Pinning them in place so that they look natural to a real sunflower.
6. Begin sewing the leaves to the flower petals. Lightly catching the yarn of the flower petals, so that the green yarn doesn’t show through to the front side.
