This is the second towel topper designed in this fashion.
This past Fall I designed a Sunflower towel topper. It is so pretty! It has the elastic hair tie on the back, just like Wrong Way Santa does. You can crochet those sunflowers in black and gray for a modern home.
I can’t stop designing crochet towel toppers.

The “Wrong Way” Santa towel topper is multipurpose and can be used 3 different ways.
1. Towel Topper – This is the kind of towel topper where you can change the towel if it gets dirty.
2. Gift Card Holder – There is a pocket in the chimney for gift cards, money, jewelry, little card or a small chocolate bar.
3. Christmas Ornament – Attach ribbon or yarn to the heels of Santa’s boots and hang it on the tree. Children are going to love this.

How to add the Santa towel topper to an oven handle or towel rack is easy.
1. Turn the towel topper over to expose the elastic hair tie that is on the back.
2. Feed approximately 1/3 of the kitchen or hand towel sized towel, up and underneath the elastic hair tie.
3. Put the towel topper in front of the oven handle or towel rack. The elastic hair tie must be under the oven handle or towel rack.
4. Fold the towel over the oven handle or towel rack, feeding it underneath the elastic hair ties. Fluff and fuss with the towel and towel topper until you are happy with the appearance.
5. When the towel becomes soiled, it can easily be replaced.

Supplies Needed For The Crochet Santa Towel Topper
Yarn:
Sugar and Cream or Peaches and Cream cotton dishcloth yarn or any worsted weight cotton dishcloth yarn: small amounts of yarn in the colors: Jute (tan or brown); Red (or chimney color of choice) Black & White Optional: Furry type of white yarn to put around the top and the bottom of the chimney.
Supplies:
Small piece of felt to put on the back of Santa’s legs. I used black, but you can use any color you would like.
1 Pipe cleaner to put behind Santa’s legs. Glue sticks and hot glue gun.
2 snowflake buttons or buttons of your choice.
Optional: One hair tie if you are making it into a towel topper.
Crochet Hook:
G/6/4.00 mm
Stitch Guide:
join w/ = join with
join w/sc = join with a sc – slip st on hook, insert hook into stitch, yo pull up a loop, 2 loops on hook, yo, pull thru 2, 1 sc is made.
slp st = Slip Stitch
ch = Chain
sc = Single Crochet
hdc = Half Double Crochet
dc = Double Crochet
sp = Space
nxt = Next
st = Stitch
* * = Execute sequence between the stars, the number of times stated
x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on
Crochet Pattern To Show You How to Crochet A Santa Towel Topper
Chimney: Make 2
You are starting at the top of the chimney.
Row 1:
Note: Leave a 6″ tail when making the base chain. This tail will be used to sew the sides of the stone portion together.
Using colorway jute or brown, ch (18) sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; ch1 & turn
Row 2 & 3:
Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each st across: ch1 and turn (17 sc)
Row 4:
Sc in each st across, do not ch1; turn (17 sc)
Row 5: right side (place a marker to denote the right side)
Slp st in 1st; slp st in nxt st; drop jute and pull up red to execute a ch 1; sc in nxt st 12 st’s; leave the last 2st’s unworked; ch1 & turn (13 st’s)
Row 6:
Sc in 1st st; *dc in nxt st, sc in nxt st; *6x; ch1 and turn (13 st’s)
Row 7:
sc in 1st st and in each st across; ch1 & turn (13 st’s)
Row 8-15
repeat row 6 & 7 end off (13 st’s)
Sew the 2 chimney pieces together by placing wrong sides together.
1 – Using red or chimney colored yarn, join w/sc under jute or brown colored overhang. This is the first sc. Follow instructions at #2.
Note: You will use the red yarn to sc around the red portion “only” of the chimney.
2 – Next you will be making a sc that will catch the elastic tie, but all loops need to be very big. Here is a written instruction.
Make the loop that is on your hook much bigger. Next insert the hook into the next stitch to make a sc, keeping the loop on your hook large. Place the elastic tie on the hook before Yarning over and pulling up a loop to make the sc. Pull the loop thru and make that loop large as well. Yarn over pull thru both large loops to complete the sc. Keep the loop that is on the hook large, and then proceed to sc the two chimney pieces together, using normal tension. Execute 3 sc st’s at each corner. Repeat the above steps when you are at the opposite side of the chimney, to catch the other side of the elastic. Make sure to keep those loops large.
3 – The large loops will keep the hair tie from pulling the chimney, when you insert the towel.
Use yarn tails to sew the overhang or jute portion of the chimney together.
How To Crochet The Mini Wreath
1 – ch7, join in a ring, ch1, 2sc in each ch, join w/slp st to beg. sc. (14 sc) End off.
2 – Weave in ends. Use a scrap of red yarn to make a small pull tie bow. Use glue gun to glue the bow at the join.
3 – Sew or glue the wreath to the right side of a chimney piece.
4 – Sew or glue two snowflake buttons to the front of the same chimney piece.
How To Crochet Snow Across The Top Of The Chimney
After the Chimney pieces have been crocheted together. Attach “just Yarn” eyelash yarn in white, execute 2 sc’s in each across the very top of the chimney, on the front piece only.
How To Crochet Snow Across The Bottom Of The Chimney
Attach that same yarn to the bottom of the chimney and execute 2 dc stitches in each st across the bottom of the chimney.
How to Crochet Santa’s Legs
Row 1:
Using Red ch 10. sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1 & turn, (9 sc)
Row 2-6:
sc in each st across (9 sc)
Row 7:
2sc in first st; *sc in nxt st;* 8x; 2 sc in last sc; ch1 & turn (11 sc)
Row 8:
Repeat row 7 ch2 & turn (13 sc)
Row 9:
dc in in 1st st, hdc in nxt st; sc in next 4 st’s; slp st in nxt st, sc in nxt 4 st’s; hdc in nxt st; dc in last; ch1 & turn (12 st’s)
Row 10:
first leg
2sc in 1st st; sc in nxt 4, ch1 & turn (6 sc)
Row 11:
Skp 1st st; sc in nxt 4 st’s, 2 sc in last st; drop red & pull up white at last pull through; ch1 & turn (6 sc)
Row 12:
pants cuff

Row 13:
sc in nxt 5 st’s; slp st in last st; ch1 & turn; (5 sc)

Right side facing you, join w/sc st in the 5th st from the left side; sc in nxt 3 st’s; 2sc in last; ch1 & turn (6 sc)

2sc in first st; sc in nxt 4 st; slp st in last; pull up white at ch1 & turn (6 sc)
Row 12:

Sc in 1st st; sc in nxt 5st’s; ch1 & turn (6 sc)

slp st in 1st st, sc in nxt 5 st’s; drop white and pull up black when you ch1 & turn; (5 sc)
Row 14:

Make the Santa Towel Topper into a Christmas Ornament.
Tie a 7″ to 10″ piece of yarn or ribbon to the heels of Santa’s boots so that you can hang it on the tree. Don’t forget to tuck a little note, some candy or money in the chimney pocket, for the little ones to enjoy. That little pocket gives you so many options. You can personalize this by adding a sweet homemade card. A small bar of chocolate. A piece of jewelry would be really nice. Don’t forget the bonus. It can be used as a towel topper too.
Santa’s legs will flop over and they won’t stand up on their own. They need reinforcement. Hot Glue, a small piece of felt, and a pipe cleaner will do the trick.
How to make Santa’s Legs Stiff
1. Make a pattern for Santa’s legs by placing Santa on a piece of paper and tracing around Santa’s legs and body.
2. Use scissors to cut 1/3″ inside the line. The pattern needs to be smaller than what is traced.
3. Place the pattern that you have made, on a piece of felt, and cut around the pattern. Double check, by placing the felt against Santa’s legs, to make sure the felt isn’t visible on the front. I used black and it didn’t show from the front. I recommend red, but I didn’t have any on hand.
4. Place a pipe cleaner at the left foot, then bring it down, bend it around to the other leg until you reach the other foot. It should be a “U” shape. Trim any excess. Hot glue the pipe cleaner in place.
6. Glue the felt piece with the pipe cleaner to the back of Santa’s legs, sandwiching the pipe cleaner between Santa’s crocheted legs, and the felt>
7. Glue or sew Santa to the inside pocket, to the back of the chimney.
