Easy To Crochet Hat Made With Chunky Yarn: Free Pattern

This easy to crochet hat made with chunky yarn will become a favorite. The Wendy Ridge Beanie is super simple to crochet. You can easily make two hats in an evening. Working with (6) super chunky yarn to create a hat in 6 different sizes was a little tricky, as it creates a stiff & thick fabric. You will need to achieve gauge on this hat. There are two sizes that are free down below. The ad free pdf crochet pattern, includes all 6 sizes. Purchase it now at ETSY or RAVELRY.

I sometimes use affiliate links in my posts. This won’t cost you anything, but will help offset the cost of yarn and other supplies needed, so that I can continue bringing you crochet patterns and craft ideas. Thank you so much for your support.  4 easy to crochet hats laying on a table. 4 different sizes. They are shingled with the largest hat at the bottom. It is a deep purple, the next size is lavender, the next size is mint green with white stripes, and the childs size is white. Each hat has a fluffy Mop Pom.

This top down chunky hat has easy to crochet ridges.

No need to go into the third loop. You can easily use a high back post technique that creates a ridge. Use this technique when crocheting baskets, to create a ridge at the bottom of the basket. This method will turn the stitch at a 90 degree angle.

This High Back Post crochet stitch will create a hat that has a flat top.

The stitches will turn in an opposite direction to create the sides of the basket and a ridge on the bottom. The same thing happens with a pill box hat . It looks beautiful with a sharp ridge at the crown, when you use the high back post half double crochet.

Follow the video below, to learn the High Back Post stitch.

It will show you the difference between a normal back post crochet stitch and a “high” back post crochet stitch.

A good friend gifted me several balls of Lion Brand Hometown USA yarn.

Her name is Wendy. Calling the hat the Wendy Ridge Beanie was an easy choice.

After I received this yarn, I had a great desire to crochet hats.

A struggle ensued so I put the yarn away for awhile. It was in full view and I would see the yarn and I was stuck on making hats with this yarn. One evening I pulled the yarn out and started crocheting.

The decision was made to keep the hat design simple, for this free crochet pattern.

The perfect design finally came to me. Simple ridges on a half double crochet hat. What a blessing that was. Wendy Ridge Beanies started flying off my hook. 5-6 hours later there were 4 hats. Just one beanie had a color change.

Crochet Pattern for the Easy Crochet Hat Made With Chunky Yarn – Wendy Ridge Beanie

Designer Notes for the Wendy Ridge Beanie:

1. Please check the gauge before making the hat. Standard crown measurements aren’t as effective with yarn that is super bulky, as it creates a thick fabric.

2. Color changes are best made by dropping the Main Color and pulling up the Contrasting Color at the join right before the Ridge Rounds. Then drop the CC and pull up the MC at the join of the last ridge round.

3. Purchase the ad free pdf that includes all sizes at ETSY or RAVELRY.

Yarn used:

Lion Brand Hometown USA (6) super bulky 2 balls (160 yds) Color way: Iris Joliet; Louisville Julep; Portland Wine; & New York White;

You can use Mary Maxim Starlette Chunky to make this hat. It only has 60 yards, so you may need 3 balls Adult sizes.

Louisville Julep, the pretty purple color, is one of my favorites. Thank you for choosing that color!
I truly am inspired by the entire set, however. Thank you very much!

It is, especially for the homeless. This type of acrylic yarn may irritate a chemo patient, but it would be so useful to the homeless.
