Now let’s move on to the Step-by-Step Guide: Making a Boutique Bow for a Crochet Baby Sailor Hat
Bow Tutorial
Supplies: Ribbon, scissors, needle & thread, thimble, and fray check or heat source to seal the ends of ribbon if using a grosgrain ribbon.
- Cut a 7” piece of ribbon
- Fold the ribbon ends to the center of the ribbon.
- Tie a knot in the end of the thread and using your needle and thread, run a basting stitch through all layers of the ribbon.
- NOTICE that I did not heat seal the ribbon, but the frayed edges will be hidden.
- You can choose to heat seal them if you are concerned about the frayed edges sticking out.
- Slowly pull on the thread, fussing with the ribbon to make nice folds, keeping everything flat.
- You just want to pleat the bow a little, so do not pull the threads really tight. Don’t let the ribbon curl underneath itself.
- Start wrapping the thread, going over the top first. This will help it stay flat, and not curl toward the back.
- Wrap the thread around the center several times, finishing with a knot in the back.
- If you are happy with the ribbon, you can always add a button or bead, and then you are finished.
- If you do not like this treatment, follow the instructions below.
- If you would like to use ribbon to cover the cinched thread portion, cut another piece of ribbon 2” long.
- Fold the 2″ piece of ribbon in half lengthwise. You may want to heat seal the ends.
- Place the folded ribbon around the cinched center.
- Place one end of the folded piece in the center back of the ribbon, and sew in place.
- Wrap the rest of the folded ribbon around the bow center, making sure to cover the thread you used to pleat the ribbon.
- Bring it to the back and fold it over, and sew in place.
- Sew your finished ribbon to the brim of the hat!
You can also make a second bow to sew to the front of Momma’s Little Firecracker Overalls that includes the sailor hat.
You could also add a bow to the Shortalls, Little Girls Jumper and the Shorts. Adding this cute little Bow to an alligator hair clip would be a fun addition to any little girls outfit.
