Making a Boutique Bow for a Baby Sailor Hat

Here is my Step-by-Step Guide: Making a Boutique Bow for a Baby Sailor Hat. This tutorial will show you how to make a “Bow Tie” that is the perfect size to fit on the brim of a Preemie, Newborn or 3 month size Sailor hat.

This blog post may contain affiliate links that will not cost you anything extra if you use it to purchase supplies. It will give me a small commission that will help my small business. Thank you so much for helping my small business.

This grosgrain ribbon with an anchor makes the perfect bow for this small sailor hat.

Crocheting a baby Sailor hat is very quick. You can find the free crochet pattern in preemie, newborn & 3mo. size —> HERE on this blog.  I offer many of my crochet patterns as free on this blog as a courtesy to you. Your visit to my blog is a help to me.

Plan to make more than one of these cute bows for extra projects.

You may want several bows as they can be adding to alligator clips for a little ones hair. It can also be placed at the top of the bib on this adorable Momma’s Little Firecracker Jumper.

Now let’s move on to the Step-by-Step Guide: Making a Boutique Bow for a Crochet Baby Sailor Hat

Bow Tutorial
Supplies: Ribbon, scissors, needle & thread, thimble, and fray check or heat source to seal the ends of ribbon if using a grosgrain ribbon.

  • Cut a 7” piece of ribbon

A 7" piece of ribbon that is laying on a rule.

  • Fold the ribbon ends to the center of the ribbon.

Ribbon ends folded the center.

  • Tie a knot in the end of the thread and using your needle and thread, run a basting stitch through all layers of the ribbon.
  • NOTICE that I did not heat seal the ribbon, but the frayed edges will be hidden.
  • You can choose to heat seal them if you are concerned about the frayed edges sticking out.

After threading a sewing needle, put three or four basting stitches at the center of the folded ribbon.

  • Slowly pull on the thread, fussing with the ribbon to make nice folds, keeping everything flat.
  • You just want to pleat the bow a little, so do not pull the threads really tight.  Don’t let the ribbon curl underneath itself.
  • Start wrapping the thread, going over the top first. This will help it stay flat, and not curl toward the back.
  • Wrap the thread around the center several times, finishing with a knot in the back.
pull the basting stitches and wrapping the thread around the center several times to cinch down the ribbon into a bow.
  • If you are happy with the ribbon, you can always add a button or bead, and then you are finished.
  • If you do not like this treatment, follow the instructions below.
You can always cover the threads at the center by gluing on a button, cabochon or bead. I am using a vintage white button with a blue anchor.
  • If you would like to use ribbon to cover the cinched thread portion, cut another piece of ribbon 2” long.

  • Fold the 2″ piece of ribbon in half lengthwise. You may want to heat seal the ends.
  • Place the folded ribbon around the cinched center.
  • Place one end of the folded piece in the center back of the ribbon, and sew in place.
  • Wrap the rest of the folded ribbon around the bow center, making sure to cover the thread you used to pleat the ribbon.
  • Bring it to the back and fold it over, and sew in place.

  • Sew your finished ribbon to the brim of the hat!

You can also make a second bow to sew to the front of Momma’s Little Firecracker Overalls that includes the sailor hat.

You could also add a bow to the Shortalls, Little Girls Jumper and the Shorts. Adding this cute little Bow to an alligator hair clip would be a fun addition to any little girls outfit.

This photo below is great to pin to all of your tutorial boards. Especially to your “crochet”, “craft” and “hairbows” boards.

I hope you have enjoyed this step by step guide on how to make a bow for a baby Sailor hat.

[…] Yarn used: Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Yarn”; Red Heart Super Saver; Caron’s Pound of Love; basically any (4) worsted weight yarn. Cotton yarn would be lovely as well. This is a great scrap busting design. Optional Supplies: 1. Any ribbon you would like to use so that you can add bows to the side of the tumbler.     a. If you are using wired ribbon I recommend removing the wire.     b. If you want to keep the wire, pull a ½” out of it out, then clip that wire end off. Then let the wire retract into ribbon casing.
