Is Red Heart Scrubby Sparkle made from polyester?
Yes! It’s made from 100% polyester, giving it the textured fibers that make it excellent for scrubbing.
Will it scratch my cookware?
No. It’s designed to clean effectively without scratching most cookware and bakeware.
Can I machine wash my crochet scrubby?
Absolutely! Toss it into the washing machine and dryer whenever it needs freshening up. It also holds up well in the top rack of many dishwashers.
Does the yarn stretch out after washing?
No. One of the nice qualities of this yarn is that it keeps its shape wash after wash.
Can I use this yarn for clothing?
I don’t recommend it for garments because of its scrubby texture. It’s much happier living in your kitchen than in your wardrobe!

- Do not end off with CC2 but pull and make the last loop bigger, or add a marker in the last loop, so that the stitches don’t start pulling out.
- End off MC & CC1 and weave in yarn tails before trying to embroider watermelon seeds.
- Embroider the watermelon seeds using a double strand of black scrubby yarn if you choose. I inserted the needle from behind at the base of every increase (2sc in same st) at round 4. Then inserted the needle to the back at the top of the sc stitches.
- Next I put watermelon seeds two rounds up, positioning the stitches between the seeds below.
- Fold the watermelon in half with the last loop that you made right at the fold.
- Make a strong crease remembering that the fold begins at the last loop.
- With the watermelon folded in half, insert your hook back in the loop, and begin to sc through all stitches, closing the watermelon.
- When you get to the fold at the opposite side, chain 15 (Optional hanging loop) and slp st back into the last st made. End off and weave in all ends.
A Funny Designer Discovery: You Need To Use Bright Pink Yarn!
I had to laugh while making the light pink version of this watermelon! I originally embroidered the seeds using black Scrubby Sparkle yarn, but on the light pink background they didn’t look like watermelon seeds at all.
Instead, they looked like a little parade of tiny ants on my watermelon slice! 😂
If you’re crocheting the light pink watermelon, I recommend using a small amount of black cotton dishcloth yarn for the seeds instead.
They show up beautifully and look much more like real watermelon seeds. Of course, if you’re making the traditional red watermelon, the black Scrubby Sparkle yarn works just fine!
