A Warm Cowl for Chemo Comfort
One thing I have heard from people going through chemotherapy and radiation is how deeply cold they can feel.
Sometimes that cold seems to settle right into your body, making something warm around your neck feel especially comforting.
It gives you that cozy layer around the neck without being a large, bulky scarf.
The Velvet Ridge Cowl Matches the Chemo Cap
This cowl was designed to coordinate with my Velvet Ridge Chemo Cap.
Both designs use velvet chenille yarn and feature the same textured ridges created with my High Back Post Half Double Crochet stitch.

The cowl adds a beautiful little detail while giving you a practical way to keep the neck warm.
No Buttonholes Needed
One of my favorite features of this cowl is the simple button closure.
If you use 3.75-inch buttons, you don’t need to make buttonholes.
The buttons can simply slip between the stitches to close the cowl.
You can use 3 or 4 buttons, depending on the look you prefer.
Choosing Your Velvet Chenille Yarn
This pattern uses #5 Bernat Velvet yarn in two colors.
You can also use Premier Just Chenille, which can be found at Dollar Tree.
Velvet and chenille yarns can be tricky to see while crocheting because of their loft, so good lighting is especially helpful.
I also recommend placing stitch markers at the beginning and end of each row to help you keep your place.
The High Back Post Half Double Crochet
The ridged band is made using my High Back Post Half Double Crochet and High Front Post Half Double Crochet stitches.

I use this stitch in many of my crochet designs because I love the defined ridge it creates.

This pattern is worked in rows, with a chain 1 at the end of each row.
The math is simple, too. If you’d like to make the cowl longer, simply add chains to the beginning chain. The ad free pdf is found at ETSY or RAVELRY.

(5) Bernat Velvet Yarn in two colors or Premiere Just Chenille – 100 yards found at dollar tree.
Supplies: 3.75” Buttons (3 or 4) of your choice to close the cowl.
Hook: I-9/5.5mm
Gauge:
4×4 = 4” wide = 12 hdc; 4”h = 9 rows height

Terminology Abbreviations:
beg. = beginning
skp = skip
nxt = Next
x = Times; example execute sequence 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on;
* * = Execute sequence between the stars the number of times stated;
in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch to complete the stitch or sequence of stitches stated.
Velvet Ridge Cowl Crochet Pattern (xsm/sm 22” med/large 28”)
Size Key (xsm/sm med/large)
Beginning: Ch 61 71 (all beginning chains do not count as a stitch)
Row 1: ch1, hdc in 2nd chain from the hook and in each ch across; ch1 & turn (60 70 hdc) 22” 28” wide
Row 2-10: hdc in each st around; ch1 & turn dropping MC and pulling up CC at the last pull through of the last hdc of Round 10 (60 70 hdc)
Measurement – 4.25” tall
Row 11: ch1, hdc in each st around, ch1 & turn (60 70 hdc)
Row 12: hdc in 1st st; *hbp hdc in nxt st* repeat between * * across the row, place hdc in last st; ch1 & turn (60 70 hbp hdc)
Row 13: hdc in 1st st; *hfp hdc in nxt st* repeat between * * across the row, place hdc in last st; ch1 & turn (60 70 hfp hdc)
Row 14: hdc in 1st st; *hbp hdc in nxt st* repeat between * * across the row, place hdc in last st; ch1 & turn (60 70 hbp hdc)
