Mountain Sunrise Cardigan Crochet Pattern

If you love crocheting wearable pieces that are both breezy and beautiful, the Mountain Sunrise Cardigan is going to capture your heart. This lightweight crochet cardigan pattern is designed for fingering weight or #2 fine yarn, making it the perfect layering piece for spring mornings, cool summer evenings, or cozy fall strolls.

Much like its sister pattern, Morning on the Beach, this cardigan features soft lacework, and thoughtful details that make it an enjoyable and rewarding crochet project from start to finish. The complete ad free pdf can be purchased at ETSY or RAVELRY.

I sometimes use affiliate links in my posts. This won’t cost you anything, but will help offset the cost of yarn and other supplies needed, so that I can continue bringing you crochet patterns and craft ideas. Thank you so much for your support.

Crochet Pattern Notes:

1. Please see Size Adjustment Tips if you are customizing this cardigan to fit your body type. You will find the help you need to make these adjustments.

2. This is designed to be an “open front” loose fitting cardigan. If you would like a tighter fit, please go down one size or make adjustments by eliminating stitches to the foundation chain, and eliminating increases in the underarm area.

3. The yoke of this sweater is written using abbreviations that separate each section of the yoke, within the row. fs1(front side 1) & fs2 (front side 2) back (back of the yoke) shldr 1(shoulder 1) & shldr 2 (shoulder 2)

Best Yarns for the Mountain Sunrise Cardigan

Choosing the right yarn is key to creating a cardigan with the drape and softness this design deserves. This pattern works beautifully with fingering weight or #2 fine yarn, and here are some of the top choices I recommend:

 Gradient Cake Yarn Options

These yarns shift gradually through color, creating a seamless ombré effect:

  • Cotton Colors from AC Moore (Discontinued)
Used in the original sample – Approx. 1950 yds

    • 1 cake for XS to XL

    • 2 cakes for plus sizes
      (Available from some Etsy sellers)

  • Scheepjes Whirl

    • 1000 m (1093 yds) per cake

    • 1 cake for XS to XL; 2 cakes for plus sizes
      👉 Find it here

  • Hobbii Twirls or Cotton Kings Twirls

    • 1000 m (1093 yds) per cake
      👉 Find it here

Variegated Yarn Options

These yarns are acrylic and spring back a little, and give beatiful variegated colors (not true gradients), but you will still love the results:

  • Lion Brand Summer Nights

    • XS–S: 800–880 yds (2 balls)

    • M–XL: 1000–1200 yds (3 balls)

    • 1X–3X: 1400–1700 yds (4 balls)

    • 4X–5X: 1800–2100 yds (5 balls)

Solid Yarn Options

Prefer a solid shade? You’re in luck.

  • Loops and Threads Woolike (by Michaels)

    • Great budget option, though you may need to go up a hook size to achieve gauge

Gauge:

4”h x 4”w = 7 dc rows x 16 dc st’s (This is designed to be a loose weave, so that the fabric is airy and has a bit of stretch width wise)

Hook:

F-5 3.75mm

Special Stitches

Shell = 3dc, ch2, 3dc in st indicated Beginning Shell

(beg. shell) = ch3, 2dc, ch2, 3dc in st indicated

2nd shell = 2dc, ch2, 2dc in st indicated

2nd beg. shell = ch2, dc in ch2sp, ch2, 2dc in same ch 2 sp.

My apologies Bobby, I left out two key stitch descriptions. This should help you. I added these two stitches to the description. Not sure how that happened.

      2nd shell = 2dc, ch2, 2dc in st indicated

      2nd beg. shell = ch2, dc in ch2sp, ch2, 2dc in same ch 2 sp.
