How to crochet a pipsqueak chemo cap is fairly easy. This hat will give a chemo therapy patient a fashionable option during the winter months, as long as their scalp doesn’t have blisters. Some chemo patients may not be able to wear a fuzzy hat like this, as their skin may be blistered, but it can also provide soft comfort for those that are not feeling well.
It would bring my heart joy to know that you will use this free crochet pattern, to make chemo caps for a local cancer center near you. I stopped at my local center and asked if this type of chemo cap would be appropriate, and they said yes. They were excited about this design, and then mentioned there is a need for chemo caps for the gents. I will be happy to oblige.

Stitch Guide:
join w/ = join with
slp sts = Slip Stitch
ch = Chain
sc= Single Crochet
hdc = Half Double Crochet
blo= Crochet the stitch indicated by using the back loop only
sp = Space
nxt = Next
st = Stitch
* * = Execute sequence between the stars, the number of times stated
x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on

Pattern Notes:
1: Beginning CH 1 does not count as a stitch.
2: This pattern is written for those who have lost their hair due to chemo or other medical conditions. If you would like a bigger hat, go up a hook size or two, or just add an increase round.
3: Crocheting with this super squishy and soft yarn can be a challenge. I like to use my fingers to help me along. So go slow…poke around with your fingers and count as you go. Below are some helpful tips from my pattern testers.
TESTER TIP 1:
Hold a piece of white paper in your lap while you crochet with this squishy yarn, will help you to see your stitches.

Place markers at increases, and at the 1st st of every round.

Round 1:
ch1; 10 hdc in ring, join w/slp st to beg. hdc (10 hdc)
Round 2:
ch1; 2hdc in each st around; join w/slp st to beg. hdc (20 hdc)
Round 3:
ch1; hdc in joining st, 2hdc in nxt st; * hdc in nxt st, 2 hdc in nxt st* 9x; join w/slp st to beg. hdc (30 hdc)
Round 4:
ch1; hdc in joining st; hdc in next st, 2 hdc in nxt st; *hdc in nxt st 2x, 2 hdc in nxt st* 9x; join w/slp st to beg. hdc (40 hdc)
Round 5:

Here are the guidelines to make this hat with the wide stripes on the side, if you don’t want the stripes, drop down to Round 17, and continue in the pattern. Video Support at the 11:40 mark.
1. First stripe (Rounds 9& 10): Drop MC at the join and pull up CC at the end of Round 8; Drop CC at the join and pull up MC at the end of Round 10.
2. Second Stripe (Round 11): Drop MC at the join and pull up CC at the end of Round 11
3. Third Stripe (Rounds 12 & 13) Drop CC at the join and pull up MC at the end of Round 13

Follow instructions below, to make this hat with a turned up brim
Round 20:
TURN ch1, sc in blo and in each stitch around; join w/slp st to beg. sc (50 sc)
Note: BLO was the front loop, before you turned
Round 21:
ch1, sc in joining st, sc in nxt st (8x), 2 sc in nxt st; *sc in nxt st (9x), 2 sc in nxt st;* 4x; join w/slp st to beg. sc (55 sc)
Round 22 – 27:
ch1, sc in joining st, and in each st around; join w/slp st to beg. sc (55 sc) End off at the end of Round 23 and weave in ends.
Finishing measurements = crown to brim 8 – 8 ½”; across the folded hat 10 ” – 10.5”; circumference 20.5”- 21.5”
The turned up brim is so nice. You can easily add a brooch to dress it up too!
