There are various (6) weight yarns that you can use to make this chunky shells hat for an adult.
I love to use Lion Brand, Wool Ease, Thick and Quick Yarn. It isn’t suitable for chemo patients as there is wool in that yarn. Lion Brand Hometown is an acrylic yarn, and it is more suitable for a chemo hat. However some chemo patients can’t handle an acrylic hat.
You can use a (5) weight yarn and it will be the right size for a child.
Lion Brands “Feels Like Bliss” looks like a good option. I might give that a try in the near future. Let me know if you have used this yarn before.

I really had a good time using up my scraps to make this lovely Blue Snowflake Chunky Shells Hat.
I had a lot of yarn odds and ends. Just little balls and I just grabbed them and made this fantastic looking hat. I love the color variations. Such a pretty hat.

There is also a Black and Cream Variegated in the Lion Brand Thick and Quick Yarn.

1. Adult Small to Large Hat – (6) Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick or Lion Band Hometown USA: Approx 130-140 yds
2. Child Size Hat – Any (5) weight yarn; Lion Brand Mandala Impressions yarn and Possibly Lion Brand Feels Like Bliss: Approx. 130-140 yds.
3. Crochet Hook: L-11/8mm
4.Gauge: 4″x4″ – 1.5 shells wide x 5 rows of Shells in Height.
