Easy Tutorial How To Make A Fur Pom Pom

Making a fur pom pom is fun and easy. I will show you a techiniqe that keeps you from getting haiir everywhere. So gather your supplies.

1. You can purchase yarn at the fabric store. Some fur comes in strips that can be purchased at Michaels.
The strips are 9″X12″. It will be big enough to make a 6″x6″ square of fur.
2. You will need a small amount of crochet thread or heavy duty button thread.
3. A Clear plastic ruler or ruler of your choice.
4. 1 Large eyed sharp needle.

Picture 2: Make sure that the needle is large enough to accomodate the heavier thread, and that it has a sharp tip.

There are a few other objects that will help you make the fur pom pom.

Picture 1:
1. You will need a long pointy object like a knitting needle of screwdriver. You will use it to part the hair on the fur strip.
2. You will also need a comb.

Picture 2:
1. Lay the faux fur next to the ruler.
2. Put the edge of the fabric at the 6″ mark. Notice: There is fur hanging over the edge of the fabric. Measure the fabric only, not the fur/hair.

1. Use the ruler as a guide and slide the knitting needle through the fur in a strait line.
2. Then fold the fur back.

1: The fur should be parted in a strait line.
2: Use a comb to cotinue to part the fur. Start combing it so that those stragglers are out of the way.

1. The part is looking good now!
2. Go ahead and take time to measure the fur again.

1: Use scissors to cut down the part. Voila…very little fur of hair loss.
2: Now you have 2 6″x9″ pieces, but you need them to be square.

1: Time to measure and part the hair again.
2: Make another clean cut and you will have two 6″x6″ squares.

1: The corners of the square need to be cut off. Start parting the hair and cutting the corners off.
2: Cutting off the corners is easy and you won’t make a mistake if you measure and part the hair so that you can see where you are cutting. A good measure is 1.5″ x 2″

1: Now you have an octagon.
2: Notice that you can see the sharp corners where the fur hangs over the edges.

1: If the sharp corners are bothering you, just clip them off.
2: Now is a good time to use a lint roller to pick up any extra fur that is on your table. 

1:Cut a piece of crochet thread, approximately 45″ long. Double the thread and knot it at the bottom.
2: Make a running stitch on the outer edge of the octagon.

1: Place the running stitch approx. 1/4″ to 1/2″ from the edge.
2 Slightly gather the octagon as you stitch around the edge.

1: Notice the knot and the thread tail. Notice also that the needle is still attached.
2: Start pulling the thread at the knotted end, as well as the thread that has the needle attached.

1: Leave a little bit of an opening.
2: Start putting either polyfil or cotton balls into the center.

1: Don’t overfill your ball. You don’t want it to be tight. This isn’t amigurumi.
2. Continue to pull and tighten down the threads.

1: Continue pulling and securing the threads to close the hole. 
2. You will notice little dog ears. Push them inside the ball and tighten. Keep pushing in the dog ears and tightening, until the ball looks the way you want it to.

1: Tie it very securely.
2: Using the needle go to the opposite side of the hole. keep going back and forth securing the hole closed. 
3: Tie it off, but don’t clip off the thread tails.

Now you are finished! Fluffy your ball and use the thread tails to tie at the crown of a hat. 

You can sew them to the handle of a purse. There are so many things you can do with these trendy little fur balls.
