What a fun Red White And Blue Chicken Sweater. This free crochet pattern is for a full feathered bird. Chicken sweaters are used to comfort a molting chicken. A molting chicken needs just a bit of protection from Roosters and the cold.
Chicken sweaters have been used for years to provide this type of protection.
This chicken sweater is intended for fun and whimsy. You may want to walk your chicken in parades and take photos of your sweet chicken in this sweater. You can purchase the ad free pdf at RAVELRY and ETSY.
This Red White and Blue Patriotic Chicken Sweater is not for a molting chicken.
Over the years folks have started bringing chickens into the home. Chickens are considered loving pets to many people. They will put diapers on their chicken to catch the mess. They also put a harness and leash on their chickens to walk in parades and around their neighborhood.
This Crochet Chicken Sweater is designed for a chicken with feathers.
This is a whimsical design celebrating the Fourth of July. I tried to mimic the great flag of the United States by adding mother of pearl star buttons. There is a tutorial down below that explains how to use scotch tape to hold the buttons in place.
The first chicken sweater I designed was in 2015 for a friend.
Her chicken Sparkle had molted. After her feathers started to grow back a dog chased her down and pulled out all of her feathers. She was bald and freezing. I believe this type of sweater is a help to chickens and their owners. Check out this review of a chicken sweater I designed in 2015. She runs a chicken rescue and she said, “even the chickens love this sweater”.

Notes:
1. Beginning ch2 on collar counts as a stitch, and will recede and become a Mock bp hdc
2. Beginning ch1 does not count as stitch unless otherwise stated. Some crochet artists can achieve gauge width wise but cannot horizontally, and vice versa. I have added measurements throughout the pattern so that you can easily see if an added row is needed or eliminated.

Edging Round (The ad free pdf includes photos)
- Place markers at Row 24 on skirt 1 and at Row 21 of Skirt 2.
- With the right side of the work facing you, sc around the entire edge of the sweater, executing 3 sc’s at the corners.
- Keeping your markers in place.
- Stop at the marker at skirt 2, to make a button loop (sc, ch6 or ch8, if using a larger button ch8)
- Continue to sc around both skirts and the collar, join w/slp st to beg. sc at the end of this round.
- End off when you are back at the beginning. Weave in all yarn tails.
Button Attachment Tutorial (Purchase the ad free pdf to access photo tutorials)
- Time to attach the button to the Skirt 1 at Row 24, and it is important that you make a “SHANK” under the button, making sure to use a large button, so that there is plenty of room for the button loop.
- This extra wiggle room will add ease and movement as your chicken wears the sweater.
- For a visual presentation, follow the steps in this video tutorial.
- After you have attached the button, pull up the button creating a ½” to 1” of length.
- Bring the yarn or thread back up, just under the button not through a hole in the button.
- Wrap around the ½” to 1” of length you created when sewing on the button.
- Pull it tight, then sew the yarn or thread to the back and fasten off
Star buttons are easy to find on Etsy or Ebay. (here is a video tutorial on how to add the buttons using scotch tape)
- I decided to use 17 mother of pearl Star buttons.
- Use Scotch Tape to hold the buttons in place while sewing them on.
- This keeps the buttons from shifting and will save you a lot of time.
- Thread a sewing needle with sewing thread and knot the end and proceed to sew the buttons in place, while keeping the scotch tap intact.
- There is no need to knot and cut the thread after each button is sewn unless you choose to do so.
- Just knot the thread in the back and move to the next button.
- Keep knotting the thread and move from button to button, until the thread gets too short.
- When it is too short you will need to rethread your needle. I had to thread my needle 3 times.
- If you do not want to use this method, knot and cut the thread after each star button has been sewn in place.
- After all buttons have been sewn in place, gently remove the tape.
