How To Crochet A Chunky Yarn Bucket Hat

Let me show you how to crochet a chunky yarn, bucket hat. As the cooler months approach, it’s time to think about adding cozy and stylish accessories to your wardrobe. This hat was designed to coordinate with the Cozy Bonfire Poncho.(Edit)

You will want this Bonfire Bucket Hat for those moments when you’re sitting around the fire in a rustic ski lodge, or around a bon fire.

This versatile and on-trend piece will keep you warm and fashionable. The best part? The free crochet pattern will show you how to crochet this bucket hat, using chunky yarn.

In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the process of crocheting the xsmall-small sized hat, by providing both the free crochet pattern, with video support coming soon.

With our tips and tricks you will quickly acheive the bucket shape everyone loves. To start this crochet journey, selecting the yarn will be easy, as there are quite a few different yarns to choose from. My first choice is Barcelona Yarn, but it’s discontinued and Impressions from Michaels has taken it’s place. Puzzle yarn by Premiere is another great substitute.

Below is a video showing you how to work that High Back Post Half Double Crochet Stitch, that creates the unique ridge at the top of the hat.

YouTube tutorial on how to crochet the High back Post Half Double Crochet Stitch.

Now it is time to show you how to crochet this chunky yarn bucket hat.

Purchase the complete ad free pdf from Etsy or Ravelry. It will include all sizes. You will find a tablet version as well as a printable version.

The tablet version makes it easy for those with low vision issues, as they can enlarge the screen, and the youtube links are clickable.

If you are just wanting to get down to business and print off the pattern, then you will find a condensed version after the tablet version.

First, here are a few notes from the Designer:
The unique ridge at the crown of the hat is easy to reproduce using a High Back Post HDC. The Chunky Crochet Hat uses this stitch as well as most of our crochet basket designs. Here is a video link to show you how to execute the
High Back Post Half Double Crochet Stitch Easy Tutorial

Another important moment in the creation of the Bonfire Bucket Hat is the execution of the brim. End the side of the hat with a round of sc stitches. The next round will be a front loop only round of st’s.

The stitch pattern will continue around the brim, with an increase every 11th stitch. Let’s get started! A  true Bucket from the 60’s has short sides and a shorter brim. If that is what you would like to achieve, watch the video below, starting at the 15:26 minute mark. I will also add instructions during the pattern to help you achieve that vintage effect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Z3RvYf6L38

Yarn:
I used Barcelona Big by Michaels colorway Tapestry. They have rebranded this yarn and it is now called Impressions, and you can still purchase the colorway Tapestry. Puzzle Yarn by Premier is a great substitute. You will need one ball. Below is my affiliate link for Puzzle yarn This will not cost you a thing, but will enable me to purchase more yarny and crafty things. https://shrsl.com/441bp

I think my niece will love the bonfire poncho. The hat and a pair of fingerless mittens should keep her cozy for camping, bonfire parties and at football and soccer games.
Thanks for extending the pdf collection time (I thought was missing a link.)
