Common FAQ’s about crochet coffee cozy’s

1. Why should you crochet a coffee wrap or cozy?
Yes you should. A crocheted coffee wrap or cozy is designed to insulate your hands from hot or cold drinks. It provides a reusable and eco-friendly alternative to disposable coffee sleeves, making it both practical and stylish, especially when you crochet one as cute as this floating heart stitch cozy.

2. Does this coffee cozy fit all cup sizes?
This coffee cozy is designed to fit most standard size coffee cups, not mugs, but cups.

3. Can I wash my crocheted coffee wrap?
Yes, crocheted coffee wraps are washable. For best results:

  • Wash by hand in cold water with mild detergent.
  • Lay flat to dry to maintain its shape.
    If it’s made with machine-washable yarn, you may also use a gentle cycle, but always check the yarn care label first.

4. Will the coffee wrap absorb spills?
It really isn’t designed to absorb spills. Its primary purpose is to protect your hands and keep drinks insulated. If spills occur, rinse or wash the wrap as soon as possible to avoid stains.

5. Can I use it for cold drinks?
This would work perfectly with cold drinks! They reduce condensation on the cup, keeping your hands dry while insulating the beverage.

6. What type of yarn is best for crocheted coffee wraps?
I love to use Cotton yarn as it is the most commonly used material for coffee cozies. It is durable, absorbs heat well, and can be easily washed. However, I designed this coffee cozy with acrylic yarn.

7. How do I secure the wrap to the cup?
This coffee wraps are designed to slip snugly over the cup.

Photo tutorial of the Floating Heart Stitch is found HERE.

FLOATING HEART STITCH – turn your work just enough to complete the following stitches  around the post of the dc below, going down the post, (SC, HDC, DC, 2 TRB, SLP ST) one half  of the heart has been made. Then you will turn your work just enough so that you can complete  the following stitches around the post of the next dc going up the post, (SLP ST make slp st  moderately loose here, CH 4, 1TRB, DC, HDC, SC) second half of heart made. Then cross over  and close the base of the heart by executing a SLP ST in the SC of the opposite side of the heart.  MAKE SURE TO SC DIRECTLY AT THE BASE OF THE HEART YOU JUST MADE,  WHICH WILL BE THE DC THAT HOLDS THE SECOND HALF OF THE HEART

SLP ST = Slip Stitch

CH = Chain

SC = Single Crochet

HDC = Half Double Crochet

DC = Double Crochet

DC DEC = YO, insert hook in nxt st, draw up loop, (three loops on hook) YO pull through 2 loops; 2  loops on hook, YO, insert hook in nxt st, draw up loop, (4 loops on hook) YO pull through 2 loops; YO  pull through remaining loops on hook.

in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch to  complete stitch or sequence of stitches stated.

This is written in American standard terms, and is made from the top down

A crocheted cozy has a lot of stretch to them. If you would like your cozy to be looser than what I have in  my instructions, then add to the base chain in multiples of two. You will need to have an odd number of  stitches.

Using MC, CH 27 and join in ring, being careful not to twist.

Beginning CH 2 does not count as a stitch throughout the pattern.

Round 1: CH 2; HDC in joining st, and in each CH around; join w/SLP ST to beg. HDC; CH 2 (27 HDC)

 Next is 3 rounds of ribbing

Round 2: FP HDC in joining st; *BP HDC in nxt st, FP HDC in nxt st* 13x join w/SLP ST in beg. FP HDC; CH 2  (14 FP HDC; 13 BP HDC; 27 stitches)

Round 3 & 4: Repeat Round 2

You will be decreasing by two stitches this next round, to compensate for the taper of the coffee cup.  If you are making this to fit a cup that does not have a taper, please ignore the decreases.

Round 5: DC in joining st; DC DEC; *DC in nxt st;* 21x; DC DEC; DC in last st; join w/SLP ST to beg. DC;  CH 1 (25 DC)

Round 6: SC in joining ST; *SC in nxt st* 12x, dropping MC and pulling CC through on last pull through;  FLOATING HEART STITCH; SC in next st, drop & cut CC leaving a tail for weaving in later; pull up MC on  last pull through; SC in last 11 stitches; join w/SLP ST to beg. SC; CH 2 (25 SC)

Round 7: HDC in joining st, and in each st around; join w/SLP ST to beg. HDC; CH 2 (25 HDC)

 Next is 3 rounds of ribbing

Round 8: FP HDC in joining st; *BP HDC in nxt st, FP HDC in nxt st* 12x join w/SLP ST in beg. FP HDC; CH 2  (13 FP HDC; 12 BP HDC; 25 stitches)

Round 9 & 10: Repeat Round 8; end off at the end of Round 10; secure and weave in all ends.
