How To Crochet An Easy Baby Blanket With Cables : Free Pattern

I want to show you how to crochet an easy baby blanket with cables. The first cabled blanket I designed went to my first granddaughter Gracie. A few years later Gracie got a little sister. Her mother requested that I make one for Abigail. She loves these Velvet blankets. The free pattern is below, or purchase the ad free pdf now at ETSY or RAVELRY. The pdf includes charts and designer tips to help you along.

Choosing to use Lion Brand’s Vel-Luxe yarn in pale gray & dusty pink was a fabulous choice as it is so luxurious and soft.

I love that it comes in a cake and it is a “4” yarn, but it is not a normal “4”. I consider this yarn to be a hefty 4 yarn. It appears that Lion Brand will be discontinuing this yarn soon, as I can only find it on clearance on their website in one color only.

A few of the ladies that tested the pattern happily told me that they had never made cables before and they found making them was easy.

They used an acrylic worsted weight yarn, and their blankets were beautiful. I know you can make this too!

I have added a free version below, that makes an approximately 40″ x 35″ blanket, just right for a baby.

If you would like information on how to make a larger version and have the ability to access all of the charts and designer tips, you can purchase the pattern on Etsy, Ravelry and Love Crafts.

Special note on different yarns to crochet this cable baby blanket.

If you branch out and use Bernat Velvet yarn (5) I recommend a “K 10.5/6.50mm” hook and the end result will be a larger blanket. The pdf that includes all charts and adjustment info, will help you make adjustments if needed. If you make Gracie’s Blanket using Bernat Velvet yarn, I would love know how it works up.

This isn’t my first go using Velvet Yarn. I am in love with Bernat’s Velvet yarn. It makes a super cute hipster style hat. I call this my Boston Velvet Hat.

Hi Krissy, just want to say I LOVE your patterns. I was just curious about the Over Brook Poncho. I have made several and I love the detail – it is always beautiful. However on the bottom of page one of pattern you note that if you are using a larger size yarn (chunky 5 weight) we should follow the smaller size pattern. I am not sure where this smaller pattern is at or does it have to be purchased separately. Thank you.

Hi there! I am so glad you like the Over Brook Poncho Pattern. I see your question about sizing and yarn options. So I need to ask, what size are you working with? There are three patterns XS-Small; M-XL & 1x-3x that are all sold separately.

My advice is to make your grandchildren afghans when they are young. I waited too long with my grandson. He is now 6’7″ and I had to make his a lot bigger! 🙂

The Velvet (name) for Gracie’s Blanket is indeed precisely correct; I am deeply impressed.

Good Krissy Hope this day finds you warm and well. Just to say I love your patterns which I’ve made many of your ponchos. I’ve laid down my hook for a while and then now ready to pick it back up. I love baby blankets. Just the thing I need to get started back up again.
    Have a Blessed day, 💕

I didn’t find it hard, it was a matter of getting used to which stitch to use when you are making the cables.
