This Spiked Sedge Stitch Crochet Blanket Is Toddler-Approved

This design was inspired by my sweet grandson, Deegan. I originally crocheted this blanket just for him, and it’s now his favorite! His mother says it’s been through the wash many times and still looks beautiful. That’s a win in any crocheter’s book! About the Pattern

• Stitch Used: Spiked Sedge Stitch (easy to learn, with video support)

• Skill Level: Advanced beginner and up

• Yarn: Any worsted weight yarn (category 4)

• Finished Size: 40” wide x 52” tall (instructions included to resize!)

• Optional Border: No border is required, but feel free to add one if desired. I think the border on the Baby Blue blanket would be wonderful for this blanket. 

This pattern is scrap-friendly, making it a great stash buster project. The colorful spikes really pop when using multiple colors or coordinating scraps. I chose a variegated yarn first and then matched coordinating solids around it—with a dominant color (blue) to tie it all together.

Use the color charts and the written instructions below to crochet Deegan’s Baby Blanket.

Yarn used: Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Yarn” (4) 2 skeins of each of these colors was used with small amounts left over of each color. Blue (Arctic Ice) Gray (Light Gray) Cream (Ivory) Green (Spa) Variegated (Birchwood Cottage)
Gauge:
4” x 4” = 5 spiked sedge stitches across x 12 rows high
Finished blanket = 40” wide x 52” long
Make a swatch, ch20, sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each ch across, ch1 & turn:
Row 1- Sedge Stitch in each st across, sc in last st; ch1 and turn, Rows 2-13, Spiked Sedge Stitch in each st across, sc in last st, ch1 and turn Game Changer Crochet Stitch – Spiked Sedge Stitch With Color Changes – Step by Step Tutorial #baby
Crochet Hook: H-8/5.00mm
STITCH GUIDE:
yo = yarn over
ch = Chain  
sc = single Crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
sp dc = spiked double crochet – in stitch sequence indicated in the pattern, yo,  insert hook under the sc of the previous round (not in the sc, but under, the space where the sc was made) yo, draw up all loops to the level of the row you are working with, yo, pull thru 2 loops, yo pull thru the last 2 stitches made. sp = space
nxt = next
st = stitch
skp = skip
*  * = Execute sequence between the stars, the number of times stated
Special Stitches
SS = Sedge Stitch – in stitch indicated in pattern place a sc, hdc & dc.
SSS = Spiked Sedge Stitch – in stitch indicated in pattern place a sc, hdc, sp dc

Row 1: Chain 122, sc in 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across, ch1 and turn

(If you would like a wider blanket here is the math. 6 extra chains will add 2” to the width. 12 chains will add 4” to the width)

If you would like a longer blanket, 12 more rows will add 4” in height (every 3 rows adds 1”). You can use the color charts that begin on page 6, to help you decide where to place the extra rows, so that your colors are balanced.

You can choose to carry your yarn up the side of the blanket, or you can end off at each color change. I found this to be the easiest method and is what I recommend.

Row 2: ss in 1st st, skp 2st’s; *ss in nxt st, skp 2st’s;* repeat between *  * across; sc in last st; ch1 and turn

Row 3: sss(spiked sedge stitch) in 1st st, skp 2st’s; *sss in nxt st, skp 2 st’s;* repeat between *   * across; sc in last st; ch1 and turn (60 sss now and throughout the rest of the pattern)

Repeat Row 3 following the charts below. They are presented in order. Example: Each row is numbered. Follow each chart in order, going up the chart, beginning with the first chart. The boxes do not represent how many stitches are in each row.
