The bunny stitch Moses basket is cute and is a quick project to crochet. Little girls love to carry their dolls in a basket, so this Moses Basket is the perfect size for little hands. This bunny stitch Moses basket will hold a 7.5″ -8.5″ doll. These adorable dolls pictured, were found on a shopping trip to the Dollar Tree, and they can easily be ordered online. It has been a joy to create many different sized Moses Baskets. Here is aview of the Moses Baskets and home decor baskets, that I have created in the past. Crocheting baskets makes me so happy!
Two strands of yarn are held to create the main body and the hood of the Moses basket. One strand only is held during the drop over edge that holds the bunny stitch.
Bunny Stitch Moses Basket Crochet Pattern
Supplies:
7.5″-8″ doll
stiff cardboard (8″w x 12″h)
pencil
small amount of poyfil stuffing
½ yd. fabric of choice
scissors
hot glue gun & glue sticks
exacto knife or scissors to cut the cardboard.
Steam iron or hand held steamer, along with a pressing ham and pressing cloth
Embellishment trims or ribbon. 23″ of 1.5″ wide satin ribbon to make a pull tie bow, or other embellishments of your choice. Let your creativity soar.
Yarn Used:
This yarn needs to be stiff. The stiffer the better. Acrylic yarns like Caron One Pound or Red Heart Super Saver are good choices.
I used Red Heart Super Saver; Approx. 200 yds of MC, 50yds of CC1; and 50 yds of CC2, 40 yds CC3
Hook: You will need all three hooks to complete the Bunny Stitch Moses Basket

Stitch Guide:
MC = Main Color = Cream/White or color of your choice
CC 1 = Bunny Color
CC 2 = Green Grass Color
CC 3 = Easter Color = Pink, Yellow or Blue
slp st = Slip Stitch
ch= Chain
sc = Single Crochet
hdc = Half Double Crochet
dc = Double Crochet
lspk st = Long Spike Single Crochet Stitch
sspk st = Short Spike Single Crochet Stitch
dec = Decrease-two sc st’s crocheted together as one.
blo = Back Loop Only
h bp hdc = High Back Post Half Double Crochet; execute BP HDC high under the top two loops, not around the center of the post. (refer to video tutorial)
st/st’s = stitch or stitches
beg. = beginning
nxt = Next
x = Times; example execute sequence 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on;
* * = Execute sequence between the stars the number of times stated;
( ) = Repeat the stitch as many times as stated, ex. SC in nxt st (2x), You will place 1 SC in the nxt st, twice
in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch to complete stitch or sequence of stitches stated.
join w/ = join with

Step 1: Bunny foot and body:
Turn your work just enough to complete the following stitches around the post of the dc below, going down the post, (slp st, ch3, slp st in 2nd and 3rd chain from the hook (bunny foot made) – 3 hdc around the post, sc & slp st around the post)
Step 2: Bunny head and ears:
Turn your work just enough to execute the bunny head, under the top two loops of the dc round below. (2 hdc under the two loops, *ch6, slp st in the first ch made* slp st in the protruding third loop of the last hdc made; shove the stitches over, 2hdc under the top two loops) Bunny ears and head made.
Step 3: Bunny body and foot:
Turn your work just enough so that you can complete the following stitches around the post of the next dc, going up the post. (slp st, sc, 3hdc, sc, ch3, slp st in 2nd and 3rd ch, slp st)
Cross over and close the base of the bunny by executing a slp st in the beg. slp st of the bunny body.
Last Step 4:
sc in the stitch that is directly at the base of the bunny that was made, WHICH WILL BE THE DC THAT HOLDS THE 2nd half of the bunny body and foot.
Neck Tie:
Cut a 6″ piece of contrasting yarn, in the color of your choice. Insert the hook at the base of the neck. Pull the yarn through to the back of the head. Continue to use the crochet hook pull the yarn through to the front.
Tie the yarn in a knot, cinching it down tight. Cut off the ends, leaving a 1/2″. Repeat for each bunny that was made.

Holding two strands of MC yarn, CH 15 (foundation CH made)
Beginning Chains do not count as stitch unless otherwise noted.
Round 1:
hdc in 2nd ch from hook; *hdc in nxt st;* 12x; 3 hdc in last st: go down the opposite side of the foundation ch; *hdc in nxt st;* 12x; 2 hdc in last st; join w/slp st in 1st hdc made. (30 hdc)
Round 2:
ch1; 2hdc in joining st; 2hdc in nxt st; *hdc in nxt st;* 11x; *2 hdc in nxt st;* 4x; *hdc in nxt st* 11x; *2hdc in nxt st;* 2x; join w/slp st in 1st hdc made. (38 hdc)
Round 3:
ch1; 2hdc in joining st; *2hdc in nxt st* 2x; *hdc in nxt st;* 14x; *2hdc in nxt st* 5x; *hdc in nxt st;* 14x; *2hdc in nxt st;* 2x; join w/slp st in 1st hdc made. (48 hdc)
Round 4:
ch1; hdc in joining st; 2hdc in nxt st; *hdc in nxt st; 2hdc in nxt st;* 2x; *hdc in nxt st;* 15x; *2hdc in nxt st; hdc in nxt st;* 5x; *hdc in nxt st;* 14x; 2hdc in nxt st; hdc in nxt st; 2hdc in last st; join w/slp st in 1st hdc made. (58 hdc)
Round 5:
ch1; h bp hdc; in each st around; (58 h bp hdc)
Use “K” hook (Hold the basket so that the outside of the basket is facing you through Rounds 6-10.) You should see this ridge.
Round 6-9:
ch1, hdc in joining st, and in each st around; join w/slp st to beg. hdc. (58 hdc)
Round 10:
Repeat Round 6: At the end of the round, drop both strands of yarn; join w/slp st pull up one strand only of yarn to beg. sc. (58 hdc)
Note: You will be using one strand only while executing the drop over bunny stitch edge.
Round 11:
ch1, 2sc in joining st; *sc in nxt st (6x), 2sc in nxt st;* 7x; sc in last 8 st’s; join w/slp st in beg. sc. (66 sc)
Bunny Stitch Drop Over Edge
Use “H” hook
Turn so that the inside of the basket is facing you. All stitches will be in the blo for round 12 only.
Round 12:
ch2; dc in blo of each st around; join w/ slp st to beg. dc. (66 DC)
Round 13:
ch2; dc in joining st and in each st around; Drop MC and pull up CC1 at the join w/ slp st to beg. dc. (66 DC)
Round 14: Bunny stitches will be placed every 11th st.
1.Place a marker in the 5th st from the join. This includes the joining st.
2. Proceed to place markers at every 11th stitch. 6 markers total.
3.Execute the bunny stitch at each marker.
4. Place a marker at the first bunny made, to make it easier to find when it is time to add the hood.
ch1, *sc in each st until you reach the marked st. sc in that marked st, Bunny Stitch;* repeat between * * around; sc in remaining st’s; Drop CC1 and pull up CC2 (grass color) at the join w/slp st to beg. sc. (6 bunnies)
Round 15:
ch1, sc in joining st and in each st around; join w/ slp st to beg. sc. (66 sc)
Round 16:
ch1, sc in joining st; *sspk st, in nxt, sc in nxt, lspk st, in nxt, sc in nxt* repeat between * * around, make sure to execute a spike stitch at the base of each bunny. join w/slp st to beg. sc, ch1 (66 st’s) Watch this video at the 22.00 minute mark to see the spike stitch into the bottom of the bunny.
Round 17: The key to this round is crochet a spike st opposite, the sc in the previous round.
lspk st in joining st, *sc in nxt st, sspk st, in nxt, sc in nxt, lspk st, in nxt st;* repeat between * * around, drop CC2 and pull up CC3 (Easter color) at the join; slp st to beg. sc; ch1 (66 st’s)
Round 18:
sc in joining st and in each st around; join w/slp st to beg. sc; join w/slp st to beginning sc; (66 sc)
Round 19: Ripple Stitch Round
*ch1, slp st in nxt st* repeat between * * around; join w/slp st to beg. st; end off and weave in all ends.
Hood For Bunny Stitch Moses Basket
Use “K” Hook & Hold 2 strands of yarn:

The Bunnies are evenly placed around the drop over edge of the Moses Basket.
Each side has 2 bunnies, and one bunny on each end.With the outside of the basket facing you, find the 1st bunny that was made.
In a counter clockwise direction, place a marker at the next bunny.
Skip the bunny that is at the end, and place a marker at the next bunny, on the other side of the basket from the marked bunny.
The bunnies with the markers will be opposite each other. There should be exactly 24 stitches from one marker to the next.
The rest of the pattern is worked in Rows. Row numbers for the Hood will start over.
Row 1:
Holding two strands of MC yarn, use a “K” hook, hold the basket with the outside facing you,
Attach yarn w/slp st at the 2nd marked bunny; ch1, hdc in same st, and in the next 23 st’s. You will be at the marked bunny, that is opposite the bunny at the beginning of this round. ch1 & turn. (24 hdc)
Row 2:
sc in 1st and in each st around; ch1 & turn. (24 sc)
Row 3:
sc in 1st and 2nd st, dec; *sc in nxt 4 st’s, dec;* 3x, sc in last 2 st’s; ch1 & turn. (20 sc)
Row 4:
sc in 1st and 2nd st, dec; *sc in nxt 3 st’s, dec;* 3x; sc in last st; ch1 & turn. (16 sc)
Row 5:
sc in 1st st, dec; *sc in nxt 2 st’s, dec;* 3x; sc in last st; ch1 & turn. (12 sc)
Row 6:
sc in 1st st, dec; *sc in nxt 2 st’s, dec;* 2x; sc in last st; ch1 & turn. (9 sc)
Row 7:
sc in 1st st; dec; sc in nxt 3 st’s; dec; sc in last; ch1 & turn (7 sc)
Row 8:
sc in 1st st; dec; sc in nxt st; dec; sc in last; turn (5 sc)
Row 9:
slp st in 1st st; sc 3 st’s together; slp in last st; do not turn but follow the edging rounds that are below.
Edging Rounds Of The Bunny Stitch Moses Basket
Round 1:
This round starts where Row 9 ended. Continue looking at the outside of the basket.
ch1, sc down the remaining portion of the hood (approx. 9 st’s); when you are at the basket side, skp the st that is right next to the hood, it is almost hidden. sc in nxt 3 st’s, ch7, skp 7 st’s, *sc in the nxt st;* 21x;
Note: the first st “after” the 7 chain should be behind a bunny, and the 21st st, should be behind a bunny that is opposite the bunny where the 1st st was executed.
ch7, skp 7 st’s, *sc in the nxt st;* 3x; begin to sc up the edge of the hood, (approx. 9 st’s) slp st in the beg. slp st that was made.
Round 2: Ripple Stitch Round
*Loosely ch1, slp st in nxt st* repeat between * * in each st and chain around; slp st to beg. st. End off and weave in all ends.
The hood will be a little bit lumpy. Steam blocking will remedy this, and will smooth out those bumps.
How To Steam Block The Hood On The Bunny Stitch Moses Basket
You will need a pressing ham, or a towel that is rolled up into a ball. Also a steam iron or hand held steamer & pressing cloth.
1. You will be using the steam from the iron,or a hand held steamer to steam the hood portion you are wanting to shape.
DO NOT place the iron directly on the yarn.
2. Turn on the “steam” option on the iron and use the hottest setting on the iron.
When the iron is hot, hold the iron a few inches above the hood. Shake the iron until steam starts pouring out.
3. This step is done in sections.
I split the hood in four sections. (left side, middle, right side & back if needed) Choose a section of the hood to be steamed. When the portion of the hood that is being steamed is hot, place the pressing ham underneath.
4. Place a pressing cloth over the steamed portion.
Start pressing and molding the hood. Smoothing out the bumps, and pushing the hood into a rounded form.
5. Repeat this process until the hood is shaped and smooth.
After the hood is shaped, use 1.5″-2″ wide ribbon to make a pull tie tuxedo bow, or a loopy bow with longer tails. Sew or glue the bow to the top of the hood, or embellish in a a way that is pleasing to you.
