Poncho Cowl | Free Crochet Pattern

What a great design this poncho cowl is! I love how you can wear this design so many different ways. Wear it as a poncho, cape, hood, or just a cowl. You can purchase an ad free pdf on Ravelry or Etsy, or keep scrolling to view the free version.

I created this design as part of collection that caters to those that walk their dog. This piece is great to keep by the door to throw on when you need a little warmth. Wear it as a poncho with a cowl that can be pulled up as a hood. Unbutton the side and wear it as a cape. What a great item to have hanging next to the door when it’s time to walk the dog. I also designed a “A hat for the boys” so they can help walk the dog too!

Yarn: Any worsted weight yarn. I used Red Heart “Super Saver” and “With Love” when creating this Caped Hooded Cowl.

Approx. MC = 300 yds ; CC 1 = 280 yds; CC 2 = 30 yds

Hooks: J- 10/6.0mm
H- 8/5.0mm (Fan edging only)

Gauge: 4” x 4”= 10 rows x 12 stitches across in Houndstooth Check Pattern ( SC in nxt ST, DC in nxt ST)

Note: My testers found that Caron Simply Soft, Hobby Lobby ILTY, and various other worsted weight yarns, made it hard for them to reach gauge. It is ok to go up a hook size or two, but if the pattern seems too loose use the hook that gives you the best stitch density, and add more rows to each section. You may also add to the base chain in a multiple of two.

Notions: 3 buttons 1” to 1 ½” in diameter

Stitch Guide

MC = Main Color

CC 1 or CC 2 = Contrasting Color

join w/ = join with

SLP ST = Slip Stitch

CH = Chain

SC = Single Crochet

DC = Double Crochet

TRBL = Treble Crochet

RS = Right Side

WS = Wrong Side

SP = Space

nxt = Next

beg. = beginning

* * = Repeat between the stars the number of times stated; x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on;

in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch to complete stitch or sequence of stitches stated.

This design can be worn so many ways. You can just throw it over your shoulders, letting the unsewn edges fall over them like a cape, placing the colors in a manner that flatters your face. You can always button the cowl and wear as a hood or snood in the case of snow or rain. My favorite is to have the sewn edge rolled down like a turtle neck, letting the unsewn edges fall over your shoulders like a cape letting the fancy buttons show. It is so easy to adapt this design to the weather conditions because you are always need to walk your doggie.

 

NOTES:

You will be using a sequence of stitches that consists of each row starting with a SC and ending with a DC, Turn at the end of the row, and pull up the new color when you CH 1 if color change is indicated.
Please pay close attention to color change instructions. This sequence of stitches makes for an easy and quick project. The color changes are different than the normal “Houndstooth Check” pattern. I designed this to match “A Walk in the Park” Series of patterns, but remember the color changes are not the same.

MC = White
CC 1= Black
CC 2 = Red

Section 1
The color changes in this section will alternate with two rows of MC and one row of CC 1. When you drop the MC, make sure to carry the MC yarn that was just dropped, crocheting over the yarn as you carry it to the end of the row. The yarn strand will be hidden in the stitching, and will be in the proper place, ready for you to pick up for the next color change. There is no need to carry the CC1 as it will be in its proper place when needed.
Rows 1 thru 53 = 25” length; each row is 20.5” wide

Using MC and “J” hook ; CH 55

Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook and in each Chain across; Turn; CH 1 (54 SC)

Row 2 & 3: CH 1; *SC in nxt ST; DC in nxt st* across; Turn; CH 1;
(54 ST) NOTE: Drop MC, pull up CC 1, when you CH 1 at the end of Row 3; and don’t forget to carry the MC yarn that was just dropped, crocheting over the yarn as you carry it to the end of the row, per instructions above.

Row 4: *SC in nxt ST; DC in nxt st* across; Turn, Drop CC 1, pull up MC when you CH 1; (54 ST)

Row 5 – 55: Repeat Rows 2 thru 4 consecutively, making sure to drop MC at the end of Row 53, pulling up CC 1 when you CH 1
NOTE: Do not carry MC color; end off and weave in tails later. (54 ST)

NOTE: Please feel free to add more rows here, in a multiple of three, using the color changes that you have been executing.

Section 2
Row numbers will start over. This will be the same stitch sequence using MC, only with one Row CC 2 as an accent.

Rows 1 – 22 = 8 ¾” length; row is 20.5” wide

Row 1 – 9: remember you are using MC *SC in nxt ST; DC in nxt st* across; Turn, Drop MC at the end of Row 9, pull up CC 2 when you CH 1; (54 ST )

Make sure to carry MC through to Row 10
Row 10: *SC in nxt ST; DC in nxt st* across; Turn, Drop CC 2 at the end of Row 10, pull up MC when youCH 1; (54 ST )

You are finished with CC 2; end off leaving a tail for weaving
Row 11 – 22: *SC in nxt ST; DC in nxt st* across; Do not turn at the end of Row 22; (54 ST )

Sew 9.5” of the cowl together. The visible seam will now be on the wrong side of your work.  Leave the rest of the cowl unsewn

Do not end off, as you will proceed to SC around the entire
unsewn edges of the cowl. Instructions will be found below in the Finishing rounds instruction.

 

Finishing Round numbers will start over. The edging will be placed on the WS on the upper edge, and the RS for the bottom edge. 

Upper Edge Finishing Rounds. The ad free pdf includes photos in the following tutorial. The ad free pdf can be purchased on Ravelry or Etsy,

1. SC around the entire upper edge, including the unsewn “V”
   
2. With RS facing you, attach yarn w/SLP ST at the bottom of the “V”.
3. Proceed to SC up the open side of the cowl; 3 SC at the corner; Loosely place 1 SC in the side of each row, across the upper edge;
4. 3 SC at the corner;
5. SC in each st down the other unsewn edge, join w/ SLP ST in beg. SC,
6. skip a stitch if necessary to eliminate bulk in this sharp “V” area, End off.

SWITCH TO “H” HOOK

(FAN = 5 TRBL’s with a CH 1 between each TRBL, but do not ch1 after the 5th treble Corner Fan = 7 TRBL ST’s with a CH 1 between each TRBL, but do not ch1 after the 7th treble)

(Popcorn = DC and SLP ST in TRBL, pushing DC to the RS of sweater to make a bump. It’s not really a popcorn, but I am going to call it that.)

Row 1: With WS facing you, attach yarn 3 stitches below the Left corner. *TRBL, CH 1 in corner st* 6x; TRBL; (first Corner Fan w/ 7 TRBL made) Following fans have 5 TRBL;

*Skip 3 or 4 stitches; Fan in nxt st * repeat across to the next corner, skipping three or four stitches, so that your Corner Fan lands at the corner. Skipping 3 sometimes 4 stitches will also keep the edge from rippling.
Execute Corner Fan; anchor fan w/ SLP ST in 3rd st from corner. Turn

Row 2: CH 3 (counts as DC), SLP ST at base of CH 3; SLP ST in CH 1 sp,

*Popcorn; SLP ST in CH 1 sp;* 5x
Skip last TRBL; [*Popcorn in TRBL; SLP ST in CH 1 sp; * 4x Skip last TRBL] Complete sequence between [ ]
across until you get to the Corner Fan;

*Popcorn in TRBL; SLP ST in CH 1 sp; * 7x; Note: you will be making a popcorn in each TRBL; end off , fasten and weave in all ends.

Lower Edge Finishing Rounds

With RS facing you, and Using “J” hook; attach yarn with SLP ST in a stitch that is beside the sewn seam; Proceed to “Loosely” place
*1 SC in the side of each row* around , join w/ SLP ST in beg. SC,

Don’t forget to SWITCH TO AN “H” HOOK
Round 1: (CH 5 counts as TRBL CH 1)*TRBL, CH 1 in 1st st* 3x; TRBL in joining st; (first fan made in joining st) *Skip 3 or 4 stiches Fan in nxt st; complete around making sure there is no ripple, and that you land three to four stitches away from the beg. fan; SLP ST to beg. fan; Turn, CH 3

Round 2: CH 3 (counts as DC),SLP ST at base of CH 3; SLP ST in CH 1 sp, *Popcorn; SLP ST in CH 1 sp,* 3x; Skip last TRBL [*Popcorn in TRBL; SLP ST in CH 1 sp;* 4x; Skip last TRBL] Complete sequence between [ ] around; join w/SLP ST to beg. Popcorn; End off , fasten and weave in all ends.

Button Placket

Using a ruler to measure and evenly place markers. The first buttonhole should be 1.5” above the opening.

1. Then place the last two markers approx. 3.5” apart if using 3 buttons, and approx. 2” apart is using 5 buttons. 
2. With RS facing you, insert your hook at the bottom stitch on the left side as pictured. Proceed to SC until you reach the marker.
3. Do not SC in the stitch where you placed the marker, CH 2 instead, if using large buttons or CH 1 if using smaller buttons. 
4. *Skip the marked stitch, SC in nxt st, and proceed to SC across until you reach the second marker. CH 2 or CH 1* continue across; end off when you reach the corner, and you will have a
   buttonhole placket. 
5. Using the button holes as a guide, sew the buttons to the RS of the
   Cowl.
6. You are finished. Weave in all ends and enjoy!
