Very Large Crochet Basket With Handles: Free Pattern

This very large crochet basket with handles can be made in an evening. It becomes sturdy when you add a fabric covered cardboard liner. It is 35″ around, 13″ tall and has a 12″ diameter.  The free crochet pattern is below, or purchase the ad free pdf, that includes all photo tutorials at RAVELRY or ETSY.

I sometimes use affiliate links in my posts. This won’t cost you anything, but will help offset the cost of yarn and other supplies needed, so that I can continue bringing you crochet patterns and craft ideas. Thank you so much for your support.

Crochet this large basket with Caron One Pound yarn. It's so easy to crochet. Make this basket sturdy by adding a fabric covered cardboard liner.

The crochet pattern is  easy to read and requires 2 strands of yarn to be held throughout the design.  1 1/4  yds of fabric and 1 poster board will be needed, to add the liner to the basket.

You will love how large thiss basket is. It can hold several bags of yarn. You could use it to create a Christmas arrangement with Pine Cones and Ribbons. So many possibilities!

Watch the video below, to see how to add that fabric covered cardboard liner to this very large basket. Here is a link to the complete Live on Facebook, if you would like to watch it as well. I think it is entertaining.

sc = Single Crochet

hdc = Half  Double Crochet

h bp hdc = back post half double crochet (please refer to pictorial instruction)

nxt = Next

 *  * = Repeat between the stars the number of times stated;  x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on;

Pictorial Instruction for High Back Post Half Double Crochet – h bp hdc

This is not the standard way of executing a BP HDC, but is how to execute for this basket…so I am calling it a High Back Post Half Double Crochet.

Beginning Chains do not count as stitch unless otherwise noted.

ch 1, 11 hdc in the ring, join w/slp st to beg. hdc  (11 hdc)

ch 1, 2 hdc in joining st and in each st around; join w/slp st to beg. hdc (22 hdc)

Round 9 -11:

ch 1 hdc in each st around; join w/slp st to beg. hdc (77 st’s)

Round 12: cross stitch round; beg. ch 3 counts as dc

ch 3, cross back in front of ch 3, dc in last st of last round; (first cross st made) *cross st* repeat around; there will be one open stitch left at the end of this round. Skip that st and dc at the base of the first cross st made, crossing back and dc in that last skipped st; join w/slp st in the 3rd ch of the beg. cross st. (78 st’s)

Such a lovely and large crocheted basket. The handles are wrapped in flannel and the vintage button with a bit of matching flannel make it so much fun.
This large gray basket is big enough for the small basket and the red basket to nest inside. The fabric covered cardboard liners make them so sturdy. Use a strip of flannel to tie a vintage button to the front. This set of baskets would be perfect for gift giving. Pin this photo so you won’t lose this free crochet pattern.

      Hi Carrie,

      I have a video of a baby sweater that uses this stitch. You can watch how to execute the cross stitch when you arrive at the underarm area.

    I have some really chunky yarn that might be really good for this, in cream and rust colours! Maybe I can make these and stick to my new year resolution of being more organised 😆

    I think I already have this one, but still haven’t made it yet. I really want to make some baskets. I have a ton of scrap yarn I’ve been saving. Hopefully soon.

    I want to try this pattern, I want to teach my crochet group called Needles for Needs how to do a basket and this would be perfect. I have young ladies from age 8 to 80 learning to crochet and always looking for things we can do and then give to resource centers, hospitals, rehab centers, nursing homes and the like. We could make these baskets and fill with needs and give to a charity.
