How To Crochet A Chunky Cowl: Free Pattern

Let me show you how to crochet a chunky cowl that has a little bit of rippled texture. The bulky yarn is the star of this show. You can use any variety of boucle bulky yarn to crochet this neck warmer.
Model is wearing the ripple textured cowl.

This chunky cowl has a coordinating chunky bucket hat that is easy and fast to crochet.

Crocheting with a Boucle yarn can be a little tricky. I found that using a crochet hook that doesn’t snag on the fibers, and going a little slower is very helpful. You can find the free crochet pattern, in one size, for the matching bucket hat RIGHT HERE.

This photo is showing the bucket hat that matches the ripple Cowl. The bucket hat is sitting on the knob of the mannequin and the cowl is around the neck of the mannequin.

Here are a few FAQ’s about crochet cowls.

  1. What is a crochet cowl?
    A crochet cowl is a circular scarf designed to be worn around the neck. Unlike traditional scarves, it doesn’t have loose ends.
  2. What are the benefits of wearing a crochet cowl?
    Crochet cowls are versatile, stylish, and warm. They stay in place better than scarves and can be customized to suit any season or style.

Types of Crochet Cowls

  1. What are the different styles of crochet cowls?
    Common styles include infinity cowls, buttoned cowls, hooded cowls, and textured or lacy designs.
  2. What’s the difference between a cowl and an infinity scarf?
    A cowl is typically shorter and sits closer to the neck, while an infinity scarf is longer and can be looped multiple times.

What is a hooded cowl?
A hooded cowl combines a neck warmer with a hood for extra warmth and functionality.

The cowl is on the neck of the mannequin. Free Crochet Pattern For A Chunky Cowl

Designer Notes

  1. This pattern works with a multiple of 7 base stitches.
  2. Each repeat sequence (4sc & hdcV) = 3”.
  3. This cowl is worked in Continuous Rounds.
  4. Place a marker in the first st of each round if you would like to keep track of how many rounds to crochet.

Finish off the cowl by placing a slp st in a random sc st. Do not finish off in a hdcV st.

Yarn used: Michaels Textured Twist by Loops and Threads (5) I used colorway Pastel Rainbow. 1 ball is needed.
Gauge:
4” x 4” = 13 st’s across x 11 rows high
Make a swatch, ch27, hdc in 2nd chain from hook and in each ch across, ch1 & turn:
*Hdc in each st across, ch1 and turn* repeat 15x
Crochet Hook: K-10.5/6.50mm
STITCH GUIDE:

join w/ = join with
slp st = Slip Stitch
ch = Chain
sc = single Crochet
hdc = half double crochet
hdc v = hdc in st, ch2, hdc in same st.
sp = Space
nxt = Next
st = Stitch
*  * = Execute sequence between the stars, the number of times stated

chain 70 and join in a ring, make sure not to twist the chain.

Round 1: sc in joining st, sc in nxt 3 ch’s, skp ch, hdcV in nxt ch, skp ch; *sc in nxt 4 ch’s, skp ch, hdcV in nxt ch, skp ch;* 9x; skp last ch, do not join ( 40 sc, 10 hdcV)

Round 2: *sc in nxt 4 st’s, hdcV in ch2 sp of prev. hdcV;* Repeat sequence between *  * until the cowl is the height you want. I crocheted 16 more rounds. This made my cowl 7” tall.

You are welcome to continue adding more rounds if you would like your cowl to be taller than 7”.

Finishing Off: Finish the cowl by slip stitching in a sc st; end off and weave in all yarn tails. Do not finish in a hdcV st, as this would leave a weird bump.
Finished Measurements: Height = 7”; Around = 30”;
Each repeat sequence (4sc and 1 hdcV) = 3”
