I hold two strands of Red Heart Super Saver Yarn to crochet this basket.
This stiff yarn is perfect to make a sturdy basket. You can also use a plastic jug to make a hard liner. Add a little bit of Easter fabric to line the bottom of the plastic jug that you use.
The Half Star Crochet Stitch is fairly easy to crochet.
The hard part was learning where to put your crochet hook. Once I learned that important step, crocheting the basket was easy.
Below is a video tutorial on how to crochet the basket, using the Half Star Stitch.
You can use a portion of the plastic jug to make a sturdy handle for the Half Star Stitch Crochet Basket.
I used an empty bleach jug that has been rinsed and dried to make the liner for the basket.
I crocheted a round base, then used the High Back Post Half Double Crochet Stitch to make that beautiful ridge at the bottom. It also turns the stitches so that they go up the side of the basket.

You can use any worsted weight yarn you would like to crochet this basket, but I recommend a stiff yarn.

Yarn: Hold two strands Red Heart Super Saver yarn Approx. 300-250 yds of MC – 75 yds of CC
Supplies:
1. Bleach jug or round plastic container that is 5”-5.5” inches in diameter and 16”-17” around, and is approximately 5.5”-6” tall or more. You will not use any more than 6” of the container.
2. Utility scissors to cut the plastic container.
3. Fabric Scissors
4. Measuring tape
5. Hot glue gun and glue sticks.
6. 22” x 22” piece of fabric
7. Pen for marking the cutting line.
Hooks:
L- 11/8mm
K 10.5/6.50mm (Optional)
H-8/5.00mm
Stitch Guide:
Half Star = Insert the hook in st, yo, draw up a loop, ( make sure this is a generous loop. Don’t be tight on this loop) 2 loops are on hook, insert hook in nxt st, draw up a generous loop, 3 loops on hook; yo, pull through all 3 loops on the hook; ch 1

Shell: 5 dc st’s under the ch3 arch or space indicated in the pattern
join w/ = join with
MC = Main Color
CC = Contrasting Color
slp st = Slip Stitch
ch = Chain
sc = Single Crochet
hdc = Half Double Crochet
dc = Double Crochet

sp = Space
yo = yarn over hook
blo = Back Loop Only
nxt = Next
* * = Repeat between the stars the number of times stated; x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on;
in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch to complete stitch or sequence of stitches stated.
Pattern Notes:
1: Beginning ch 1, does not count as a stitch
2: If you choose not to line your basket, you will need to use a K 10.5/6.50mm for the sides of the basket.
Half Star Stitch Basket with a Drop Over Lace Edge (Please use “L” hook)

Round 1: ch 1; 10 hdc in ring; join w/slp st in 1st hdc (10 hdc)
Round 2: ch 1; 2 hdc in nxt st and in each st around; join w/slp st in 1st hdc (20 hdc)
Round 3: ch 1; *hdc in nxt st, 2 hdc in nxt st* repeat 9 x more; join w/slp st in 1st hdc (30 hdc)
Round 4: ch 1; *hdc in nxt st (2 x), 2 hdc in nxt st* repeat 9 x more; join w/slp st in 1st hdc (40 hdc)
Round 5: ch 1; H BP HDC in nxt st, and in each st around; join w/slp st in 1st hdc (40 hdc)
Note: If you are not going to put this basket over a plastic liner, I highly recommend using a “K 10.5/6.50mm” throughout the rest of the crochet pattern.
Round 6: ch 1;*Half Star* 20x; join w/slp st in beg. st, ch 1 & turn (20 clusters & 20 ch1 st’s)
Round 7-13: *Half Star* 20x; join w/slp st in beg. st, ch 1 & turn; do not turn at the end of Round 13, (drop the MC if adding a drop over shell edge) (20 clusters & 20 ch1 st’s)
Follow the pattern below if you are adding the drop over shell edge. Skip this portion if you are adding a simple edge, and drop below to find the simple edge instructions.
Round 14: ch1; Draw up the contrasting color and sc in each stitch around; join w/slp st to beg. sc, ch1 & turn (40 sc)
End off one strand of CC and switch to H/5.00 crochet hook.
Round 15: sc in joining st, *ch3, skp st, sc in blo of nxt st* 9x; ch3, join w/slp st to beg. sc, do not turn
Round 16: slp st in 1st & 2nd ch of ch3 sp; ch1, sc under same ch3 sp, ch1; shell under nxt ch 3 sp, ch1; *sc under nxt ch3 sp, ch1; shell under nxt ch3 sp, ch1; 9x; join w/slp st, end off, weave in all ends.
