How To Crochet The Half Star Stitch

Let me show you how to crochet the Half Star Stitch. It is easy and creates a lovely texture. This stitch is very beginner friendly. A lot of folks thought this was a tunisian or Afghan crochet stitch. It isn’t though. I think you will be surprised at how easy it is to crochet.

I sometimes use affiliate links in my posts. This won’t cost you anything, but will help offset the cost of yarn and other supplies needed, so that I can continue bringing you crochet patterns and craft ideas. Thank you so much for your support.
Sample of the half star crochet stitch.

  1. To make this sample of the Half Star Crochet Stitch, you will need to use a (4) Worsted Weight yarn and a H-5.00mm crochet hook.
use worsted weight yarn and an H 5.00 mm crochet hook.
  2. You will need a multiple of 2 chains plus 1 to make this stitch. This sample uses a base chain of 11 chains.
  3. Row 1: Sc in the second chain from the hook, and in each chain across; ch1 & turn.
    beginning base chain.
  4. Row 2: Single crochet in the 1st st
single crochet in the first st,
  5. Insert the hook in the next st and draw up a loop. Draw up a generous loop, don’t be tight on this loop.
insert hook in nxt st and draw up a loop.
  6. While the generous loop remains on the hook, draw up a generous loop in the next st. You will have 3 loops on the hook.
insert hook in nxt st and draw up a loop, 3 loops remain on the hook.
  7. Yarn Over
  8. Pull through all 3 loops on the hook,
  9. Chain 1 to close the stitch
The Half Star Stitch demonstrated in the three photos.
  10. Continue to with the Half Star Stitch across the chain, placing one SC in the last chain; chain 1 and turn.

Where to place your stitches will look much different for the following rows.

Watch the video below for a visual presentation on how to crochet the Half Star Crochet Stitch.

Row 3: SC in 1st st; Half Star Stitch across, loosely SC in last st; chain 1 and turn.

Below is a photo tutorial that shows where to place your hook and draw up the two loops that make the Half Star Stitch. Remember that you begin with a SC stitch and end with a SC stitch at the end of the Row.

Make the turning chain and the SC stitch in a loose manner.

Note the arrow is pointing to a leg of the star stitch. Put your hook in front of that leg, so that the leg is behind the hook…

There is also a second leg, arrow is pointing to the second leg. The second leg will be in front of the hook. You will split the legs with your hook and generously draw up a loop.

Leave that generous loop on the hook, and put the hook on the other side of the small cluster, under the top two loops, and draw up a generous loop.

As before, yarn over pull through all three loops, then chain 1 to close the stitch. Continue to crochet the Half Star Stitch across, “loosely” placing a SC in the last stitch, “loosely”ch1 and turn.
Place the hook on the other side of the small cluster that makes the half star stitch, draw up a generous loop, yarn over and pull through all three.

I really enjoy this crochet stitch. I am planning to use this stitch to make baskets and chemo caps.

I have designed many crochet baskets over the years. If you would like to see my collection of basket crochet patterns. You can view them on ETSY . One of my favorite baskets in an ebook on RAVELRY. That basket is also a FREE CROCHET PATTERN here on the blog. I have several free crochet patterns for baskets on this blog. Check them out HERE.

I really want to design a new chemo cap using this Half Star Stitch.

I love the flexibility of the fabric when using this stitch. I will use Lion Brand Coboo yarn and possibly Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn, as it is a very soft acrylic. I have quite a few Free Crochet Patterns for Chemo Caps HERE ON THE BLOG. It will help me out if you go take a look at the designs on my blog.

Pin this photo below and you will always know where to come when you want to use this stitch.

I hope you enjoyed this crochet stitch tutorial. Let me know if you decide to use this stitch. You can come to my Facebook Group, Krissy’s Over The Mountain Crochet and Crafts.

It was so good to have you on my side of the mountain. I hope you will come back often. I want you to have this website as a resource for your crocheting and crafting needs. I also want this site to be a place where you know you will find chemo cap crochet patterns that keep the comfort of chemo patients at front of mind.

Take care and God Bless,
