Here is a free crochet pattern that will show you how to crochet a Granny Stitch Poncho Wrap. This easy-to-make poncho is a free crochet pattern that will remain forever free on my blog (ad-supported) pattern is below.
It’s a wonderful scrap-busting project that combines (5) Bulky and (6) Chunky yarns to create a beautiful, textured wrap. Plus, it features the fun Nub Stitch, which adds extra texture and charm.

Learn How to Crochet the Nub Stitch
The Nub Stitch is one of my favorite ways to add texture to crochet projects. It’s easy to learn and fun to make. If you haven’t tried it before, you can find both a photo tutorial on my blog and a video tutorial on YouTube that show you step-by-step how to crochet the Nub Stitch using chunky yarn.
How to Add Buttons Using Tape
One of my favorite crochet hacks is using tape to hold buttons in place while sewing them on. This technique helps keep your buttons straight and evenly spaced.
I’ve uploaded a detailed tutorial to my YouTube channel showing exactly how to do this. It’s a simple trick that makes finishing your Granny Stitch Poncho Wrap even easier.
Free Crochet Pattern: Granny Stitch Poncho Wrap
This Granny Stitch Poncho Wrap works up quickly and allows for creativity with color placement. It’s the perfect project for using up leftover yarn while creating something stylish and functional.
Designer Notes
- The crochet pattern is written in US terms.
- All ch3 turning chains count as a dc; all ch1 turning chains do not count as a stitch.
- This Granny Wrap Poncho is fast to crochet.
- This poncho is a scrap buster and uses both (5) Bulky and (6) Chunky Yarn.
- I used leftover balls of yarn from other projects.
- Arrange your colors however you like. Solid stripes look neat, or make it scrappy by changing colors mid-row. Be sure to leave a small ball of each yarn to make the fringe.
- If you don’t have enough bulky yarn, hold two strands of worsted-weight yarn together for a marled look.

Yarn and Hook Details
- Yarn Used: Scrap yarn in both (5) Bulky and (6) Chunky weights. Two strands of (4) Worsted weight yarn can be held together if needed.
- Hook: L-11/8.00mm
- Optional Supplies: 20 buttons, 1.5″ in diameter.
- Gauge: Not important, as this is a free-form project using multiple yarn weights.
Stitch Guide
- ch: Chain
- ch3: Chain 3
- sc: Single Crochet
- dc: Double Crochet
- Granny Clusters: 3 dc stitches together
- Nub Stitch: sc in st, insert hook in next st & draw up a loop. Use that loop to ch3, then pull through the remaining loop on the hook.
Terminology and Abbreviations
- st/st’s: stitch or stitches
- beg.: beginning
- nxt: next
- x: times; example: execute sequence 2 x or 2 times
- * *: execute sequence between the stars the number of times stated
- in: for example, “in nxt st” means insert the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch to complete the stitch or sequence of stitches stated.
Sizing and Adjustments
- Stitch count: Multiple of 5 + 5
- Length Adjustment: To make a longer wrap, increase the base chain by a multiple of 10.
- Finished Size: One size fits most – approximately 68” long (without fringe) x 32” wide.
Creative Crochet Tips
- There’s no right or wrong way to add different yarns. This is a scrappy project, so have fun with it.
- Change yarn colors at the end of each row and leave a 7” to 8” tail. These tails will later form the fringe.
- Mix light and dark yarns for a beautiful marled look.Sign up for my Newsletter and you will always know when new patterns are being released, or when I’m having an event where I share ad free pdf crochet patterns.

(Row numbers will start over) (I used Chunky yarn on one edge, and I used bulky yarn on the opposite edge)
Row 1
sc in each dc & 1 sc in each ch2 space across, ch1 & turn (119 sc) (I know it might be instinct for a seasoned crocheter to put 2 sc stitches in the ch2 space, but it will create a ripple on the edge)
Row 2
nub stitch all the way across, end with sc in last st. ch1 and turn. (This is the right side of your work) (119 st’s)
Rows 3 & 4
Repeat Row 1 & 2
Row 5
sc in each st across end off leaving a long tail that can be used as part of the fringe.
(119 st’s)
Opposite Edge Nub Stitch Treatment
(I used Chunky yarn on one edge, and I used bulky yarn on the opposite edge)
(On the opposite side of the granny wrap, attach yarn using a slp st to the corner at the Wrong Side. The Nub Stitch Rows are the Right Side)
Row 1
sc in each dc & 1 sc in each ch2 space across, ch1 & turn (119 sc)
Row 2
nub stitch all the way across, end with sc in last st. ch1 and turn. (This is the right side of your work) (119 st’s)
Rows 3 & 4
Repeat Row 1 & 2
Row 5

Sew Buttons to Both Edges of the Poncho
Video tutorial on sewing the buttons to the poncho.
I placed 10 buttons approximately 2” to 3” apart. You can use yarn, crochet thread, embroidery thread or sewing thread to sew on the buttons. I used sewing thread. I lifted the button up off of the poncho a little, so that there would be room for the bulk of the crochet fabric to fit underneath.
First check to see if the buttons you have chosen will fit through the weave of crochet stitches. I used 1.5” buttons and I believe that a 2” button would fit as well.
Add Fringe to the Ends of the Poncho
You can add as much fringe as you would like. I chose to add fringe at every chain space.
