Below is a step by step photo tutorial on How To Crochet The Nub Stitch Using Chunky Yarn.

  1. You will need a chain base that is a multiple of 2+2 chains. You will start with a single crochet stitch and you will end with a single crochet stitch. You will also need one chain for turning purposes. To create the nub, you need 1sc and 1 chain 3, this is where the multiple of 2 comes in. The ending sc and the turning chain, accounts for the Plus or + 2 stitches. Below is a chart that should help you.Crochet chart on how to crochet the nub stitch.
  2. Crochet a base chain that is a multiple of 2+2. My base chain is 14. Proceed to sc in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across.
Photo is showing the SC stitches that have been placed in the base chain.
  3. ch1 and turn. (Turning chains do not count as a stitch) sc in the first stitch after turning your work.

  4. Insert the hook in the next stitch and pull up a loop. You will have two loops on your hook.

  5. Note the two loops that are on your hook. There are red arrows pointing them.

  6. Ignore the first loop on the hook and use the second loop to chain 3.
There is a red arrow pointing to the chain 3 that is on the left.
  7. After the ch3 has been made, go ahead and pull through the first loop that is still on the hook.
photo is showing pulling the loop through the remaining 1st loop that is on the hook.
  8. I use my ring finger of my yarn holding hand, to push the chain 3 to the front of the work, as I begin to sc into the next stitch. The arrow is pointing to my ring finger.
  9. The single crochet in the next stitch has been made, and you can see the ch3 has been pushed to the front, to make a nub.
