Poinsettia Towel Topper – Free Crochet Pattern

This Crochet Poinsettia Towel Topper is a festive and functional project that adds a handmade touch to your kitchen. The 3D petals, the textured center, and the hidden elastic ponytail holder make it both beautiful and practical.

The poinsettia towel topper is laying on a table. The poinsettia towel has been woven into the back of the hidden elastic as if it were wrapped around an oven handle.

How the Elastic Ponytail Holder Works

The elastic ponytail holder is crocheted into the back of the topper. This allows you to wrap the towel around the elastic so it stays securely on your oven handle or towel bar.

The best part is that the elastic is completely hidden behind the flower. From the front, all you see is the fully bloomed poinsettia.

This photo is showing the back of the towel topper. You can see the elastic ponytail holder attached at the 3 & 9 o'clock position.

Yarn Choices for the Best Result

I used cotton dishcloth yarn for my topper. If you prefer, acrylic yarn also works beautifully with this design.

Details You’ll Love About This Design

This poinsettia towel topper includes a small but charming detail in the center. The 4-chain nub stitch creates a cluster that resembles the cyathia, the true center of a poinsettia bloom. I always called them stamens, but cyathia is the proper term. This stitch adds dimension and makes the flower look more realistic.

Finished Size

The finished topper measures approximately:

  • 5.5 inches tall

  • 5 inches wide

It’s the ideal size to hang on an oven door, towel bar, or cabinet knob.

The full free crochet pattern is included below in this post. It is ad supported. If you prefer an ad free PDF, you can purchase it in my Ravelry store or on Etsy.

This towel topper is constructed in the same way as my Sunflower Towel Topper. The elastic band is worked into the back and completely concealed.

Make It a Gift Set

This topper makes a wonderful handmade gift. You can create a complete three piece set by pairing:

  • The Crochet Poinsettia Towel Topper

  • The 3D Poinsettia Dishcloth Scrubby

  • A coordinating holiday towel

It’s the perfect present for a teacher, coworker, neighbor, or anyone who is hard to shop for. It also makes a thoughtful office exchange gift.
The poinsettia Towel Topper is in the upper left corner and the Poinsettia Dishcloth scrubby is the lower right corner.

Crochet Poinsettia Towel Topper Pattern

This 3D Crochet Poinsettia Towel Topper pattern is worked in the round and includes layered petals, textured details, and a built-in elastic ponytail holder on the back. The following pattern is written exactly as designed, using US crochet terms, and includes all petals, leaves, and the hidden elastic attachment round.

Designer Notes

  1. This crochet pattern is written in US terms.

Round 1

make the following stitches going into the ring; ch1, *sc in ring, ch4 nub stitch;* 5x, drop the center color and pull up pink or red yarn at the join w/slp st to beg. sc (10 st’s)

If you need a little help creating those ch4 nub stitches, you can watch this video. It will help you along.

Round 3
