How to Crochet a Cute Chemo Cap With a Heart Stitch

Let me show you how to crochet a Cute Chemo Cap with a Heart Stitch. It has a little turned up brim and that is where you will find the fun little hearts. All chemo patients need something that makes them feel beautiful. The free crochet pattern is below, but you can purchase the ad free pdf on ETSY or RAVELRY.

Crocheted heart stitch chemo cap worn by a woman looking down to the left, styled with a pink ribbon breast cancer awareness T-shirt, photographed against white tile and framed window
This close-fitting heart stitch chemo cap is designed to be soft enough to wear alone or underneath decorative hats.

This Heart Stitch Chemo Cap was designed with that purpose in mind

It is soft, gentle, close-fitting, and finished with a sweet heart detail to bring a smile when it’s needed most.

This crochet chemo cap features a small turned-up brim where the heart stitch is worked directly into the fabric, creating texture and interest without bulk. It’s feminine, thoughtful, and intentionally designed for sensitive scalps.

Whether you are crocheting for yourself, a loved one, or for donation, this heart stitch chemo cap is a beautiful way to show care through crochet.

Choosing the right yarn for this Chemo Cap will give you great results.

ATTENTION! If you are making this for someone who has hair, consider going up one size or using a larger hook!!!

Recommended Yarn Weight and Fiber

For this chemo cap, I used:

  • 3 weight yarn

  • A bamboo blend
    Are you getting my emails?

Bamboo yarn is especially well-suited for chemo caps because it is:

  • Naturally soft and smooth

  • Breathable and temperature-regulating

  • Gentle on sensitive or irritated skin

  • Care is needed when washing the chemo cap.

Good to know: You can absolutely use 100% bamboo yarn if you prefer. The key is softness and drape.

Why Bamboo Yarn Works So Well for Chemo Caps

Bamboo yarn helps create a cap that:

  • Feels cool against the scalp

  • Has beautiful stitch definition for the heart stitch

  • Provides comfort without heaviness

This makes it an excellent option for both chemo and radiation patients.

The Turned-Up Brim and Crochet Heart Stitch Detail

The heart stitch placement is fun and can be turned down if more warmth is needed.
Are you on my email list?

Why the Heart Stitch Is on the Brim

Placing the heart stitch on the small turned-up or turned down brim:

  • Adds visual interest where it’s most noticeable

  • Keeps the rest of the cap smooth and simple

  • Frames the face in a soft, flattering way

Yarn used:
Any Bamboo or Bamboo Cotton Blend that is a (3) or sportweight.
I used Hobby Lobby’s Bambootiful Yarn (3) 51% cotton; 49% rayon; 232 yds/232 meters per cake. I have been advised to hand wash and lay flat to dry, when using this yarn, in order for it to keep it’s beauty.

You can purchase the ad free pdf that includes Child thru Adult sizes and row by row charts on ETSY or RAVELRY.

Designer Notes:

1. Please check the gauge before making the hat. This hat does have a bit of stretch to it. Keep in mind that it is designed for someone who has lost their hair.

2. Color changes can be made at any point while making the hat by dropping the Main Color and pulling up the Contrasting Color at the join, then drop the CC and pull up the MC at the join at the end of the round.

When changing colors for the heart stitch rounds, follow the instructions given.

3. I may use affiliate links, at no cost to you, if you purchase a product using my link. If you purchase it will help fund me, so that I may continue to design new crochet patterns for you to enjoy.

4. Beginning chains do not count as a stitch unless otherwise noted in the pattern. I have added charts to help you along. They are a guide to the written pattern.

5. This tight fitting chemo cap can be worn for protection when wearing a heavier hat with decoration, or a hat that would be uncomfortable for a chemo patient to wear.

A Testimonial That Encouraged My Heart

A viewer commented on a live session, and shared this beautiful response:

“I absolutely adore those chemo caps. They are so cute on you. I really didn’t pay attention to your background. I’m a cancer survivor, and although I did not have chemo, I saw many patients wearing chemo caps and I had to wear them due to radiation treatments. I wanted to see something cute on those ladies to give them something to smile about. Your chemo cap is so cute it is a definite one to bring a smile. Thank you.”

Comments like this remind me why designs like this matter. Sometimes a simple, handmade cap can offer comfort far beyond warmth, it can bring joy.
