This Shell Stitch Moses Basket is so pretty. It is a quick project. This moses basket will hold a 7.5″ – 8″ doll. The basket is the same size as the Bunny Stitch Moses Basket that was designed during the Easter 2022 season. I designed this moses basket to match the little doll outfits that were created for the Mini Christmas in July event.
The shell stitches at the bottom of the dress are so sweet. You will find the same shell stitch sequence on the drop over edge of the Moses Basket. This is a unique design element, that you will find my other moses basket designs.

Shell Stitch Moses Basket Crochet Pattern
Supplies:
7.5″-8″ doll
stiff cardboard (8″w x 12″h)
pencil
small amount of poyfil stuffing
½ yd. fabric of choice
scissors
hot glue gun & glue sticks
exacto knife or scissors to cut the cardboard.
Steam iron or hand held steamer, along with a pressing ham and pressing cloth
Yarn Used:
This yarn needs to be stiff. The stiffer the better. Acrylic yarns like Caron One Pound or Red Heart Super Saver are good choices.
I used Red Heart Super Saver; Approx. 250 yds of MC, 50 yds of CC
Hook: You will need all three hooks to complete the Shell Stitch Moses Basket
L- 11/8mm
K-10.5/6.5mm
H/7/5.00mm
Stitch Guide:
MC = Main Color = Red or color of your choice
CC = White or color of your choice
slp st = Slip Stitch
ch= Chain
sc = Single Crochet
hdc = Half Double Crochet
dc = Double Crochet
Shell = 5 dc st’s in the st indicated in the pattern
dec = Decrease-two sc st’s crocheted together as one.
blo = Back Loop Only
h bp hdc = High Back Post Half Double Crochet; execute BP HDC high under the top two loops, not around the center of the post. (refer to video tutorial)
st/st’s = stitch or stitches
beg. = beginning
nxt = Next
x = Times; example execute sequence 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on;
* * = Execute sequence between the stars the number of times stated;
( ) = Repeat the stitch as many times as stated, ex. SC in nxt st (2x), You will place 1 SC in the nxt st, twice
in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch to complete stitch or sequence of stitches stated.
join w/ = join with

Use “L” Hook:
Holding two strands of MC yarn, CH 15 (foundation CH made)
Beginning Chains do not count as stitch unless otherwise noted.
Round 1:
hdc in 2nd ch from hook; *hdc in nxt st;* 12x; 3 hdc in last st: go down the opposite side of the foundation ch; *hdc in nxt st;* 12x; 2 hdc in last st; join w/slp st in 1st hdc made. (30 hdc)
Round 2:
ch1; 2hdc in joining st; 2hdc in nxt st; *hdc in nxt st;* 11x; *2 hdc in nxt st;* 4x; *hdc in nxt st* 11x; *2hdc in nxt st;* 2x; join w/slp st in 1st hdc made. (38 hdc)
Round 3:
ch1; 2hdc in joining st; *2hdc in nxt st* 2x; *hdc in nxt st;* 14x; *2hdc in nxt st* 5x; *hdc in nxt st;* 14x; *2hdc in nxt st;* 2x; join w/slp st in 1st hdc made. (48 hdc)
Round 4:
ch1; hdc in joining st; 2hdc in nxt st; *hdc in nxt st; 2hdc in nxt st;* 2x; *hdc in nxt st;* 15x; *2hdc in nxt st; hdc in nxt st;* 5x; *hdc in nxt st;* 14x; 2hdc in nxt st; hdc in nxt st; 2hdc in last st; join w/slp st in 1st hdc made. (58 hdc)
Round 5:
ch1; h bp hdc; in each st around; (58 h bp hdc)
Use “K” hook (Hold the basket so that the outside of the basket is facing you through Rounds 6-10.) You should see this ridge.
Round 6-9:
ch1, hdc in joining st, and in each st around; join w/slp st to beg. hdc. (58 hdc)
Round 10:
Repeat Round 6: At the end of the round, drop both strands of yarn; join w/slp st pull up one strand only of yarn to beg. sc. (58 hdc)
Note: You will be using one strand only while executing the drop over bunny stitch edge.
Round 11:
ch1, sc in joining st; *sc in nxt st (7x), 2sc in nxt st;* 7x; sc in last st; join w/slp st in beg. sc. (65 sc)
Shell Stitch Drop Over Edge
Use “H” hook
Turn so that the inside of the basket is facing you. All stitches will be in the blo for round 12 only.
Round 12:
ch2; sc in blo of each st around; join w/ slp st to beg. dc. (66 sc)
Round 13:
ch1; sc in joining st, *skp 2 st’s, shell in nxt, skp 2 st’s, sc in nxt;* 10x; skp 2 st’s, shell in nxt, skp 2 st’s; join w/ slp st to beg. sc. (11 shells)
Round 14:
ch3; 4dc in joining st, (counts as shell) *sc in nxt 3rd dc of prev. shell, shell in nxt sc;* 10x; skp 2 st’s, sc in nxt, skp 2 st’s; join w/ slp st to 3rd ch of beg ch3. (11 shells)
Round 15:
*slp st in nxt dc* 2x; *shell in nxt sc, sc in nxt 3rd dc of prev. shell, * 10x; skp 2 st’s, sc in nxt, skp 2 st’s; join w/ slp st to beg sc. (11 shells)
Round 16 & 17:
Repeat Rounds 14 & 15, drop MC and pull up at the CC of the join at the end of Round 17
Round 18:
Repeat Round 14. End off at the end of the round.

Hood For The Shell Stitch Moses Basket
Use “L” Hook & Hold 2 strands of yarn:
The rest of the pattern is worked in Rows. Row numbers for the Hood will start over.
Row 1:
Fold the basket in half and place a marker at the fold at Round 12. This is the center mark. Count 12 st’s to the right and to the left of the marker, and place a marker. You will have three markers. The center marker, the right marker and the left marker.
Attach yarn w/slp st at the right marker; ch1, hdc in same st, and in the next 24 st’s. You will be at the left marker. ch1 & turn. (25 hdc)
Row 2:
sc in 1st and in the nxt 11 st’s; dec; sc in the remaining st’s; ch1 & turn. (24 sc)
Row 3:
sc in 1st and in each st around; ch1 & turn. (24 sc)
Row 4:
sc in 1st and 2nd st, dec; *sc in nxt 4 st’s, dec;* 3x, sc in last 2 st’s; ch1 & turn. (20 sc)
Row 5:
sc in 1st and 2nd st, dec; *sc in nxt 3 st’s, dec;* 3x; sc in last st; ch1 & turn. (16 sc)
Row 6:
sc in 1st st, dec; *sc in nxt 2 st’s, dec;* 3x; sc in last st; ch1 & turn. (12 sc)
Row 7:
sc in 1st st, dec; *sc in nxt 2 st’s, dec;* 2x; sc in last st; ch1 & turn. (9 sc)
Row 8:
sc in 1st st; dec; sc in nxt 3 st’s; dec; sc in last; ch1 & turn (7 sc)
Row 9:
sc in 1st st; dec; sc in nxt st; dec; sc in last; turn (5 sc)
Row 10:
slp st in 1st st; sc 3 st’s together; slp in last st; turn, but do not ch1
Row 11:
slp st across to the 1st slp st of Row 10; do not turn but follow the edging rounds that are below.
Edging Rounds Of The Shell Stitch Moses Basket
Round 1:
This round starts where Row 11 ended. Continue looking at the outside of the basket.
ch1, sc down the remaining portion of the hood (approx. 9 st’s); when you are at the basket side, skp the st that is right next to the hood, it is almost hidden. sc in nxt 3 st’s, ch7, skp 7 st’s, *sc in the nxt st;* 17x;
ch7, skp 7 st’s, *sc in the nxt st;* 3x; begin to sc up the edge of the hood, (approx. 9 st’s) drop MC and pull up 2strands of CC at the slp st, in the beg. sc st that was made.
Round 2: Ripple Stitch Round
*Loosely ch1, slp st in nxt st* repeat between * * in each st and chain around; slp st to beg. st. End off and weave in all ends.
The hood will be a little bit lumpy. Steam blocking will remedy this, and will smooth out those bumps.
How To Steam Block The Hood On The Shell Stitch Moses Basket
You will need a pressing ham, or a towel that is rolled up into a ball. Also a steam iron or hand held steamer & pressing cloth.
1. You will be using the steam from the iron,or a hand held steamer to steam the hood portion you are wanting to shape.
DO NOT place the iron directly on the yarn. Here is a video tutorial on how to steam block the hood.
2. Turn on the “steam” option on the iron and use the hottest setting on the iron.
When the iron is hot, hold the iron a few inches above the hood. Shake the iron until steam starts pouring out.
3. This step is done in sections.
I split the hood in four sections. (left side, middle, right side & back if needed) Choose a section of the hood to be steamed. When the portion of the hood that is being steamed is hot, place the pressing ham underneath.
4. Place a pressing cloth over the steamed portion.
Start pressing and molding the hood. Smoothing out the bumps, and pushing the hood into a rounded form.
5. Repeat this process until the hood is shaped and smooth.
After the hood is shaped, use 1.5″-2″ wide ribbon to make a pull tie tuxedo bow, or a loopy bow with longer tails. Sew or glue the bow to the top of the hood, or embellish in a a way that is pleasing to you.
