An Honest Mandala Ombre Yarn Review: Everything You Need to Know

Here is an honest Mandala Ombre Yarn Review. I hope this will help you decide whether it is a good choice for your next crochet or knitting project. I used two and a half cakes of this yarn on the leafy lace wrap.

I sometimes use affiliate links in my posts. This won’t cost you anything, but will help offset the cost of yarn and other supplies needed, so that I can continue bringing you crochet patterns and craft ideas. Thank you so much for your support.

One cake of Lion Brand Mandala Ombre Yarn in the colorway chi is sitting on a table.

First let me tell you the specifics that Lion Brand yarn company has to share about Mandala Ombre. (Substitutions for this yarn will be given at the end of this post)

  • Yarn Weight
    4 Medium / Worsted

  • Crochet Gauge (4in x 4in) 14 sc x 20 r on I-9 (5.5mm)

  • Knit Gauge (4in x 4in) 20 sts x 27 r on #7 (4.5mm)

  • Length (yd) 344 Length (m) 315
  • Weight (oz) 5.3 Weight (g) 150

  • Fiber Detail 100% Acrylic
  • Care Machine Wash, Machine Dry

Below is my honest review of what happened, when I crocheted with this yarn.

  • I found a couple of knots in the three and a half cakes that I have worked with. Nothing out of the ordinary or significant to complain about.
  • It is on the smaller side of a worsted weight yarn.
  • The color gradation was lovely. It had long runs of color but they stopped abruptly. I am not a fan of sudden color changes. So that takes it down a notch for me.
  • Here is what the Lion Brand website says about the color of this yarn.
“Each color in Mandala® Ombré gradually blends into the other in both tonal and multi-colored versions. The printing technique allows for some of the cream yarn base to show through, creating a hand-dyed, artisanal effect. “

  • I did NOT encounter a thick or thin spot when using this yarn, which is a blessing.
  • The drape of my leafy lace wrap is beautiful. The yarn is soft and flexible. I haven’t washed and dried the leafy lace wrap yet.
  • I washed and dried a swatch of this yarn. I used fabric softener. It came out of the dryer softer than it was previously. It now has a little bit of  a halo on the yarn. It didn’t show any pilling though.
  • I drew an outline of the yarn swatch before washing and drying. There was not any visible shrinkage.
A crocheted yarn swatch of lion brand mandala ombre yarn, is laying on a white paper. That paper has an outline of the swatch before it was washed and dried. The photo is showing that it is still the same size that it was before it was washed and dried. There is no shrinkage.
  • Here is what the Lion Brand website says about the feel of this yarn. “Mandala Ombré is slightly thicker than the original, spun with multiple plies of premium acrylic, which give it the look and feel of merino at a fraction of the cost.“
  • I found this yarn to be very easy to work with, as it slides over the hook in a slick and easy manner.
  • The yarn did NOT split at all. I was very pleased.

[…] Honestly, for an acrylic yarn, it’s unbelievably soft and easy to work with. It has such a nice feel in your hands—smooth without a squeaky texture. It has a center pull and very few knots were found while using many skeins. The yarn doesn’t split easy either. To me it is similar to Lion Brand’s Mandala Ombre Yarn. […]
