This easy to crochet Iris stitch baby blanket will become your go to free crochet pattern, when you need a quick and easy baby blanket. The free crochet pattern, that can be found if you keep scrolling, is written so that you only need one ball of Bernat Baby Sport Ombre Yarn. The Iris Stitch Baby Blanket is a fast project.
I have crocheted 3 of these blankets in a short amount of time. This is the blanket to crochet on long car rides or watching your favorite live stream.
The iris crochet stitch is so easy & fast.
The stitch is beginner friendly. The beautiful stitch makes the Iris Stitch Baby Blanket beginner friendly also.
This is my second time designing a baby blanket that uses only one ball of Bernat Baby Sport Ombre Yarn.
A few years ago I designed the Simple Shells Baby Blanket, using only one Ball of Bernat Baby Sport, and it has been a hit. It is a free crochet pattern on my blog, and it is one of my best selling ad free crochet patterns. It is a beginner friendly crochet pattern as well.
If you cannot find baby sport ombre, here are a few other yarns that you can use.
Here are a few more yarns that can be used, if you cannot find Bernat Baby Sport Ombre. Lion Brand Ice Cream Yarn is a good choice. Lion Brand Mandala PLAIN will make a beautiful baby blanket. It is a 3 weight and there are so many beautiful colors! Another solid colored yarn would be Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek DK.
The lacy slanted shell border may be a bit more challenging.
but I am here to help you, and the pattern is written in a manner that is easily understood. Video support will be available soon. The ad free pdf crochet pattern that can be purchased at ETSY or RAVELRY will include row by row crochet charts to help you along.
The video tutorial for the Iris Stitch Baby Blanket is found below.
There is also a Left Handed tutorial for this sweet blanket, on my youtube channel.

This is beautiful. I spend a lot of time at my grandson’s (he’s 16 months old). I’m always looking for something that doesn’t involve counting. This fits the billl!

This blanket is beautiful! I haven’t used the iris stitch before- but I think I need to learn! I’m hoping I will be able to substitute a yarn that I can find where I am here in Bangladesh.
Kris says
I hope you can find a substitute. Any dk weight should work. I hope you enjoy using the pattern.
Shelly Snow says
Sometimes I want changes in texture with varied stitches, and sometimes I can’t handle that and want “mindless” crochet… no major changes, no counting… this is that! Thank you.
Kris says
You are so welcome…now the border takes a bit of thought, but the main body…well…it’s a relaxing pattern. I hope you enjoy!

I’m always looking for new baby blanket patterns to crochet for my granddaughters’ hope chests so that they have something handmade from me for their future babies. I made the Heirloom Shells Baby Blanket in white and was looking for another pattern for the other granddaughter. Your patterns are lovely and I appreciate you sharing your creativity with your fans. Thank you!
Kris says
Thank you so much Alicia! Your granddaughters will cherish the blankets you made for them. I need to start a tradition like that.

I really like the simplicity of this pattern. I am learning to read graphs and I think this is an easy one to start on for the next baby blanket I make. Due to a baby boom in our family, I have made about 16 in the last 14 years with at least 2 more to come, we hope!
Kris says
Congrats on the baby boom! That is wonderful! That is a lot of baby blankets. I am sure your family appreciates you! God Bless and enjoy those babies!
Jannine Webber says
Very beautiful pattern. Will be making this blanket next for my grandbaby <3
Kris says
Thank you…congrats on the little that is coming.
Karen Drexler says
Just lovely! I really like the beautiful ribbon woven in the border. Thanks for sharing!
Kris says
Thank you Karen. I used wired ribbon, after I had removed the wire. It’s pretty easy to do. I pull out a portion of the wire and tie it around a table leg, and then walk away holding the ribbon. It comes right out of there, and you have a soft flexible ribbon. I don’t recommend this ribbon treatment for every day use with babies. It is nice to use this treatement for photo opportunities.

So very pretty. Just perfect timing as there is a new baby in the family coming soon.
Kris says
A new baby! Congratulations!
Lori says
I am in love with this design. I love the yarn you used along with the material you used to weave around the outside with the bow. Absolutely stunning. This is definitely on my to do list!
Kris says
Thank you Lori. I actually used a large wired ribbon, after the wire had been removed. It was pretty easy, well…removing the ribbon was a bit much. I pulled out a portion of the wire, and tied it around a table leg, then walked away with the ribbon. LOL…it’s kind of funny, now that I think about it.
