Easy To Crochet Iris Stitch Baby Blanket: Free Pattern

This easy to crochet Iris stitch baby blanket will become your go to free crochet pattern, when you need a quick and easy baby blanket. The free crochet pattern can be found if you keep scrolling. It is written so that you only need one ball of Bernat Baby Sport Ombre Yarn. Purchase the ad free pdf crochet pattern at Ravelry or Etsy.

Two iris crochet stitch baby blankets. One on top of the other. The variegated pink is on top with a bow and the blue and green is on the bottom and the slanted border is easy to see.

The Iris Stitch Baby Blanket is a fast project.

I have crocheted 3 of these blankets in a short amount of time. This is the blanket to crochet on long car rides or watching your favorite live stream.
This is a crochet chart that is showing the Iris crochet stitch. The written crochet pattern can be found down below.

The iris crochet stitch is so easy & fast.

The stitch is beginner friendly. The beautiful stitch makes the Iris Stitch Baby Blanket one that beginners are able to finish with pride.

This baby blanket uses only one ball of Bernat Baby Sport Ombre Yarn.

The ball of yarn is easily found at Walmart and most craft stores, or online. Of course you can make the blanket bigger if you choose. The math can be found below, but you will need more yarn.

The ribbon trim is optional. I do not recommend using ribbon at the border, unless it is for photo opportunities only.

A few years ago I designed the Simple Shells Baby Blanket, using only one Ball of Bernat Baby Sport, and it has been a hit. It is a free crochet pattern on my blog, and it is one of my best selling ad free crochet patterns. It is a beginner friendly crochet pattern as well.

If you cannot find baby sport ombre, here are a few other yarns that you can use.

Here are a few more yarns that can be used, if you cannot find Bernat Baby Sport Ombre. Lion Brand Ice Cream Yarn is a good choice. Lion Brand Mandala PLAIN will make a beautiful baby blanket. It is a 3 weight and there are so many beautiful colors! Another solid colored yarn would be Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek DK.
The corner of the blue iris stitch baby blanket, highlighting the slanted border.

The lacy slanted shell border may be a bit more challenging.

If you struggle with the border I am here to help you, but the pattern is written in a manner that is easily understood. Video support is available on my YouTube channel, The ad free pdf crochet pattern that can be purchased at Ravelry or Etsy and will include row by row crochet charts to help you along.

The video tutorial for the Iris Stitch Baby Blanket is found below.

There is also a Left Handed tutorial for this sweet blanket, on my youtube channel.

This is beautiful. I spend a lot of time at my grandson’s (he’s 16 months old). I’m always looking for something that doesn’t involve counting. This fits the billl!

This blanket is beautiful! I haven’t used the iris stitch before- but I think I need to learn! I’m hoping I will be able to substitute a yarn that I can find where I am here in Bangladesh.

Sometimes I want changes in texture with varied stitches, and sometimes I can’t handle that and want “mindless” crochet… no major changes, no counting… this is that! Thank you.

I’m always looking for new baby blanket patterns to crochet for my granddaughters’ hope chests so that they have something handmade from me for their future babies. I made the Heirloom Shells Baby Blanket in white and was looking for another pattern for the other granddaughter. Your patterns are lovely and I appreciate you sharing your creativity with your fans. Thank you!

I really like the simplicity of this pattern. I am learning to read graphs and I think this is an easy one to start on for the next baby blanket I make. Due to a baby boom in our family, I have made about 16 in the last 14 years with at least 2 more to come, we hope!

Thank you Karen. I used wired ribbon, after I had removed the wire. It’s pretty easy to do. I pull out a portion of the wire and tie it around a table leg, and then walk away holding the ribbon. It comes right out of there, and you have a soft flexible ribbon. I don’t recommend this ribbon treatment for every day use with babies. It is nice to use this treatement for photo opportunities.

Thank you Lori. I actually used a large wired ribbon, after the wire had been removed. It was pretty easy, well…removing the ribbon was a bit much. I pulled out a portion of the wire, and tied it around a table leg, then walked away with the ribbon. LOL…it’s kind of funny, now that I think about it.
