Velvet Crochet Hat – Free Crochet Pattern

This is the hat I would wear if I would ever go sledding.

Here on “My Side Of The Mountain” sledding excursions consists of a large gathering of folks. If a tractor inner tube is available, you know it’s going to be a long night. A large bon fire is built and then you try to get as many people as possible on that inner tube, for an intense ride down the hill. Sometimes folks fall off when an unforeseen bump is hit on the trail. I’m a little too old for those excursions now…so I just leave it to the younger folks.

I used the tutorial that Marly Bird has on her youtube channel. It’s a great tutorial and using a button to secure the pom means that you can easily remove it when you wash the hat. Nobody wants a messy pom, and this technique will help you keep it nice, neat and fluffy!

Make a crochet velvet hat for the guys!

Crochet it in a dark color and leave off the Mop Pom. They will love it and it will be so warm.

There are many different velvet yarns to choose from, but one of my favorites is Bernat’s Velvet Yarn.

You can find it at Yarnspirations.com  There are 20 shades to choose from. It is a 5 chunky gauge and it is recommended that you hand wash your items to keep the yarn looking fresh and new. It is 100% polyester and each ball size is 300g / 10.5 oz, 288 meters / 315 yards

I recently found a different variety of velvet yarn from Bernat, and it is called Crushed Velvet. I am excited to make a Boston Velvet hat using this yarn.

The colors are wonderful. Yarnspirations says that the yarn is a luxuriously soft variegated yarn designed to create velvety soft multi-tonal projects. Its bulky weight stitches up quickly and and when worked together with Bernat Velvet, it creates a beautiful multi-textural look. It is a 100% polyester yarn and each ball size is 300 g/10.5 oz, 288 m/315 yds.

 

Boston Velvet Hat – Children’s    5yr-Adult XS

Bulky 5 – Bernat Velvet Yarn.  Bernat Crushed Velvet – Approx. 150 to 180 yds.

Hook:
K- 10.5/6.50mm

Gauge:  4” x 4”= 2 shells wide by 4 shells in height

Notes:
1. Beg. CH 1 does not count as a stitch, unless otherwise noted

Shell st: 5 DC in the stitch indicated in the pattern

SC = Single Crochet

join w/ = join with

st = stitch

*  * = Repeat between the stars the number of times stated.

x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on.

in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch to complete stitch or sequence of stitches stated.

beg. = beginning

CH 3 join in ring or use Magic Circle

Round 1:

CH 1, 9 HDC in ring; join w/SLP ST to beg. HDC. (9 HDC)

Round 2:

CH 1, 2 HDC in joining st, and in each st around; join w/SLP ST to beg. HDC. (18 HDC)

Round 3:

CH 1, *HDC in joining/nxt st; 2 HDC in nxt st;* 8 more x; join w/SLP ST to beg. HDC.
(27 HDC)

Round 4:

CH 1, *HDC in joining/nxt st 2x; 2 HDC in nxt st;* 8 more x; join w/SLP ST to beg. HDC.
(36 HDC)

Round 5:

CH 1, *SC in joining/nxt st 3x; 2 SC in nxt st;* 8 more x; join w/SLP ST to beg. SC.
(45 SC)

Round 6:

CH 1, *SC in joining/nxt st 4x; 2 SC in nxt st;* 8 more x; join w/SLP ST to beg. SC.
(54 SC) 6”- 6 ½” diameter

Round 7:

CH 1, don’t SC in joining st, but SC in nxt st; Skp nxt st 3x, Shell in the nxt; *Skp 2 st’s, SC in nxt; Skp 2 st’s, Shell in nxt;*  7 more x; skp last 3st’s, join w/SLP ST in beg. SC. (9 SC & 9 Shells)

Round 8:

SLP ST in nxt ST 3x (Note, you should be at the peak stitch of the first shell of the previous round.)  CH 1, *SC in peak st; Shell in the nxt SC;* 8 more x; join w/SLP ST in beg. SC.
(9 SC & 9 Shells)

Round 9 – 13:

Repeat Round 8. Note: You may add more rounds here, if you would like a taller slouchier hat. (9 SC & 9 Shells)

Round 14-19:

CH 1, SC in joining st and in each st around; join w/ SLP ST in beg. SC (54 SC)

Round 20:

CH 1 & Turn; HDC in BLO in each st around; join w/SLP ST in beg. HDC (54 HDC)
[You are actually crocheting in the front loop, but since you turned your work, the front loop becomes the back loop]

Round 21:

CH 2 (Note: CH 1 will recede and become a mock BP HDC); FP HDC around 1^st HDC; *BP HDC around nxt HDC, FP HDC around nxt SC;* complete sequence between * * around; join w/SLP ST in beg. 2nd CH of beg. BP HDC

Round 22-27:

Repeat Round 21; End off, secure and weave in all ends.

Make a Floppy Tassel Pom Pom and attach it with a button just as Marly Bird demonstrates in a video.

The link is below. It’s super easy but a word of caution. When trimming your tassel, make sure to hold it over a trash can and then shake it outside a little bit to knock off the extra lint.
