How to Choose and Attach Flowers to a Crochet Chemo Cloche

How to Choose and Attach Flowers to a Crochet Chemo Cloche can completely transform your finished piece.

In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through exactly how to choose the best flowers for your Comfort and Grace Cloche, especially if you’re making it for a chemo patient. You’ll learn the difference between flat-back vs cone-back flowers, how to modify them, and how to create a secure, comfortable embellishment.

Why Flower Choice Matters for a Crochet Chemo Cloche

When embellishing a structured crochet cloche, especially one designed to be worn over a chemo cap, comfort is just as important as beauty.

Flat Back vs Cone Back Flowers: What’s the Difference?

Flat Back Flowers Is Easier To Use

Flat-back flowers are the easiest and most comfortable option.

Characteristics:

  • Smooth, even back surface
  • Easy to attach
  • Minimal bulk inside the hat

How to Use:

  • Add a piece of felt or sewing fleece to the back of the flower
  • Secure the flower directly to the cloche with sewing needle and thread
  • Optional items to embellish the silk flower with:
    • Vintage brooches
    • Breast cancer awareness pins
    • Beads or cabochon centers

The Flat Back flowers are ideal for chemo hats because they won’t create pressure points.

Cone Back Flowers (Needs Modification)

Cone-backed flowers have a raised center on the back.

Characteristics:

  • Rounded backing
  • Can create a noticeable “bump” inside the hat

When They Work:

  • Fashion hats
  • Personal use
  • Situations where comfort is less of a concern

However, for chemo patients, this bump can cause irritation to their scalp. Modifications can be made to create a flatter surface.

How to Create a Flat Surface to a Cone-Back Flower

It is fairly easy and the end result can be so beautiful! Watch this video tutorial on how to create that flat surface and How to Choose and Attach Flowers to a Crochet Chemo Cloche.

Step 1: Remove the Flower from the Stem

  • Hold the flower firmly
  • Gently pull or snip it off, use wire cutters if needed
  • Be sure to hold the flower firmly as some may fall apart after removing it from the stem
Gently pulling to see if the flower can be pulled off of the stem, instead of being cut off. Using Scissors to remove from the stem, since there isn't a wire. Success, the flower has been cut off of the stem, but hold on to the flower tightly.

Step 2: Secure the Flower with Hot Glue

  • Use a hot glue gun to secure the petals
  • Lift petals and glue between layers, be generous with the glue
  • Work in sections while holding the center tightly
Peeling back the layers of the flower petals and gluing them together.

Tip: Some flowers require a lot of glue to fully stabilize.

Step 3: Build a Flat Back Surface

To make the flower comfortable for wear, you’ll need to flatten the back.

Here are several ways to do that:

 Add Leaves

  • Glue leaves to the back
  • Helps distribute bulk evenly

 Add Feathers

  • Try:
    • Peacock feathers
    • Ostrich plumes
    • Lace fanning around the cone
  • Adds beauty while helping flatten the shape
Lace and feathers have been added to the back of a coned flower, to make it flat.

 Layer Extra Flower Petals

  • Use small flowers (like those from Dollar Tree)
  • Remove petals and glue them in layers
  • Arrange:
    • Two on one side
    • One extending outward

Create a Floral Arrangement

  • Add small clustered flowers
  • Build out the back until it sits flat
  • Add a spray of leaves (these can be found on the stem of the flower)
A floral arrangement with 3 flowers glued together, then an arrangement of feathers and lace to the Whispering Roses Cloche.

Finishing the Back for Comfort

Once your flower is shaped:

Add a Soft Backing

  • Use felt or sewing fleece
  • Cut into an oval or shape that covers all edges
  • Make it slightly larger than needed

Why This Matters:

  • Covers sharp or hard pieces
  • Protects sensitive scalps
  • Creates a clean, professional finish
  • The needle can easily catch the felt or fleece when attaching the arrangement to the hat.
Gluing a piece of Felt to the back of the flower arrangement.

How to Attach the Flower to Your Cloche

In the next tutorial, I’ll show you exactly how to sew your flower onto the hat securely.

Basic idea:

  • Place your finished flower on the side of the cloche
  • Sew through the fleece backing
  • Anchor it firmly to the hat

This ensures durability while keeping the inside soft.

Creative Embellishment Ideas

Make your cloche truly special with these ideas: (Watch this snippet on How To Attach a Brooch to a Large Silk Flower.

  • Add a breast cancer awareness pin
  • Use a vintage brooch for a keepsake piece
  • Incorporate mixed greenery and florals
  • Add beads or decorative centers
  • Create a memory hat using sentimental pieces

This is a beautiful way to repurpose meaningful items into something wearable and comforting.

Tips for Chemo-Friendly Crochet Hats

If you are making hats for chemo patients, always remember:

  • Keep the inside smooth and flat
  • Avoid hard or bulky elements
  • Use soft backing like fleece
  • Test placement before sewing

Your goal is to create something that is:

  • Comfortable
  • Gentle on the skin
  • Beautiful and confidence-boosting
