I used Lion Brand Mandala Yarn, 100% acrylic, in a (3) weight, to make this chemo cap.

This Single Cable Chemo Cap was designed for Sweet Potato Three’s Cancer challenge she sponsors every October.
Little did I know that I already had Breast Cancer and wouldn’t be diagnosed for two more years. I was going for an ultrasound and mammogram every six months because of lumps in my breast. One of them was painful and there were other symptoms. They kept telling me they were cysts. Nothing to worry about.
Fast Forward to July of 2021 and there were visible signs that something was wrong.
I had been going for screenings every six months for a few years and I thought, surely they would have caught the cancer if I had it. It turns out the type of Cancer isn’t detectable by a mammogram or ultrasound. I should have pushed harder to get more testing. I should have had a “Breast MRI”. Thankfully I didn’t have to undergo Chemo or Radiation.
God has been with me through this journey, and I have been Cancer Free for 2.5 years now.
The hardest and most uncomfortable part of this journey for me, was telling my family I had Breast Cancer. That still brings pain when I think of it. All I could do was pray for them to have the same peace that the Lord had given me.
I had to have a mastectomy on the right side.
The surgery is a bit brutal. At times my vanity gets the better of me and I wish I would have had a double mastectomy, as that silly prosthetic doesn’t stay where it’s supposed to. I have been pondering how to make my own prostetic so that it looks natural. Stay tuned for that one.
I absolutely hate this photo below, but it’s a reminder to me of a time I was ignoring the signs and not pushing forward to get answers.
I was overly tired, you could see the stress on my face. I did a lot of airbrushing to get rid of what I thought was ugly, and in essence it was. Cancer was weighing me down and I didn’t know it. I finally have my energy back. Praise the Lord.
Since my diagnosis I have made it my mission to design beautiful chemo caps.
I have tried my best to understand what a chemo patient goes through. The pain and irritability their skin endures. How to decide if acrylic yarn will work for a chemo patient or not. Some can handle acrylic yarn and some can’t. It is my advice to you not to use Red Heart Super Saver and all of the yarns that fall into that stiff scratchy category. Wool yarn is OUT! Do not use wool yarn. Bamboo seems to be a great choice, and some cotton yarns. Dishcloth cotton yarn isn’t something I would use for a Chemo patient.
The Peekaboo Ridge Chemo Cap is my favorite design so far.
Next would be the Bucket Mesh Chemo Cap, and then next would be the Simple Ridged Chemo Cap. I used Lion Brands Coboo yarn. On the Tiny Pink Pearls Chemo Cap I used Lion Brand Truboo. I found it very hard to work with.
