Easy Free Crochet Pattern to Make a Nautical Basket

You will love this easy and free crochet pattern to make yourself or a loved one this lovely Nautical Basket. There is a video that will show you how to make that stiff fabric covered liner. Easy Free Crochet Pattern for a Nautical Basket

Materials Needed To Make The Stiff Liner Of Your Nautical Basket Crochet Pattern.

  • Poster weight cardboard.
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks.
  • Scissors for cutting cardboard.
  • Scissors for cutting fabric.
  • Measuring tape & Yard Stick.
  • Fabric Pen or Pencil…it doesn’t have to be a fabric pen or pencil.
  • Approximately 1/2 yd of fabric of your choice. (I used cotton duck fabric by Waverly)

The Easy Free Crochet Pattern to Make a Nautical Basket is below.

Yarn Used:

Red Heart Super Saver; MC= White CC = Navy

Round Basket – 2 strands held together; MC= Navy 200 yds; CC =  Navy 60 yds

Gauge: 

Round Basket  – using K hook: 4″ x 4″ = 10 st’s across x 11 rows high

Swatch
holding two strands of yarn together, ch 20
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1 & turn (19 st)
Row 2: sc in each st across, ch 1 & turn (19 st)
Row 3 – 15: repeat Row 2 (19 st)

Hooks Needed

J-10/6.00 mm

K-10.5/6.50 mm

Stitch Guide:

MC = Main Color = White or Navy

CC = Contrasting Color = Navy or White

ch = Chain

sc = Single Crochet

bp sc = Back Post Single Crochet

h bp sc = High Back Post Single Crochet – wrap the hook high around the post, above the third loop to execute a back post sc

dc = Double Crochet

join w/ = join with

slp st = Slip Stitch

skp = Skip

sp. = Space

nxt = Next

prev. = previous

st./st’s = stitch or stitches

beg. = beginning

* * = Complete sequence between the stars, the number of times stated;

x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on;

in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch to complete stitch or sequence of stitches stated

Special Stitch Guide:

scss2 = Single Crochet Spike Stitch 2; insert hook two rows below and execute sc st, repeat in that same st, for a total of 2 sc spike st’s 

Seaside Reflections Round Basket

Using “K” hook & hold 2 strands of CC (Navy), ch 3 & join in a ring

Round 1:

ch1, 11 hdc in ring; join w/slp st to beg. hdc (11 st)

Round 2:

ch1, 2 hdc in joining st and in each st around; join w/slp to beg. hdc. (22 hdc)

Round 3:

ch1, hdc in joining st, 2 hdc in nxt *hdc in nxt st, 2 hdc in nxt* repeat around; join w/slp to beg. hdc. (33 hdc)

Round 4:

ch1, hdc in joining st, hdc in nxt st, 2 hdc in nxt *hdc in nxt st (2x), 2 hdc in nxt* repeat around; join w/slp to beg. hdc. (44 hdc)

Round 5:

ch1, hdc in joining st, hdc in nxt st (2x), 2 hdc in nxt *hdc in nxt st (3x), 2 hdc in nxt* repeat around; join w/slp to beg. hdc. (55 hdc)

Round 6:

ch1, hdc in joining st, hdc in nxt st (3x), 2 hdc in nxt *hdc in nxt st (4x), 2 hdc in nxt* repeat around; join w/slp to beg. hdc. (66 hdc)

This free crochet pattern was featured during a summer celebration event a few years ago.

Round 7:

ch1, hbp sc in joining st and in each st around; join w/slp to beg. hdc. (66 hdc)

Round 8-11: Use “J” hook throughout the rest of the pattern.

ch1, sc in joining st and in each st around; join w/slp to beg. sc;  at the end of Round 11, drop CC (Navy) & pull up MC (white) at the last pull through of the last sc of Round 11(66 sc)

Round 12: 

ch1, scss2 in round below, ch 1; *skp 2 st’s, scss2 in round below, ch 1* repeat around; join w/slp to beg. scss2.  (22 scss2)

Round 13:

Drop MC (White) & pull up CC (Navy) at the ch1 that begins this round; ch1, sc in joining st and in each st around; join w/slp to beg. sc. (66 sc)

Round 14:

ch1, sc in joining st and in each st around; join w/slp to beg. sc. Fasten off and weave in all ends (66 sc)

Finished Measurements: 30″ around; w x 8″ diameter

    I’m always looking for ways to stabilize my baskets. This is the reason I don’t make crochet baskets. But since I’ve found your ideas on this I love it. This basket is perfect for the suggestions you’ve given as well as for baby items that will go on the changing table!
