Nautical Blue And White Mug Rug | Free Crochet Pattern

What a beautiful Nautical inspired blue and white mug rug. It is easy and fast to crochet. Change the yarn color to blue. Add in a couple of rows of Spiked Single Crochet stitches puts this cute mug rug in the Nautical category. The free crochet pattern is below or you can purchase the ad free pdf at RAVELRY or ETSY.

Change the colors of your Nautical Mug Rug to fit a Holiday theme.

  1. Reds & Greens will make a cute Christmas Mug Rug.
  2. Fall Colors for Thanksgiving themed Mug Rugs would be nice to have placed around the home. When family is wandering through the home visiting with one another, they have an absorbant and cute place to set their coffee cup.
  3. Pastel Colors for an Easter themed mug rug.
  4. Red White and Blue! Woo Hoo! Those are colors to celebrate! Outside parties with mug rugs. Lay them around the party area to enhance the clebratory atmosphere.
  5. Valentine’s Day Colors Mug Rugs are great to add to a gift basket, or just roll up a couple of them. Place them in a cute coffee mug to gift to a co-worker. 
  6. Wearing of the green! Who can forget St Patricks Day! This day just cannot be ignored. You could add fun Shamrock Appliques to this Mug Rug.the nautical mug rug has a blue and white coffee cup sitting on it and is placed on the corner of the Nautical placemat.

If your kitchen has a fruity theme, you could change the colors to match that!

  1. Lemons are fun. Use yellow and white yarn!
  2. Cherries, Strawberries, Apples – You could use red and white yarn.
  3. Pineapples are fun. Golds, greens and yellows? Hey! I have a cute Pineapple Basket design that would be a fun addition to coordinate with your mug rugs.

Use up all of those yarn scraps that are too valuable to throw away. You can crochet a lot of mug rugs in one evening. Put them away for when you need a quick gift. Red Heart Super Saver; MC= White CC = Navy

Red Heart Super Saver; MC= White; 40 yds. CC = Navy; 15 yds.
Note: It is perfectly acceptable to use cotton yarn. My testers used Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Cotton”, and they needed to add

Gauge: 

4″x4″ = 14 st’s across x 13.5 rows high 

Swatch 
chain 26,
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1 & turn (25 st)
Row 2: sc in 1st st, *dc in nxt st, sc in nxt st* repeat across; ch 1 & turn (25 st)
Row 3- 18: Repeat row 1 & 2

Stitch Guide:

MC = Main Color = White or Navy

CC = Contrasting Color = Navy or White

ch = Chain

sc = Single Crochet

dc = Double Crochet

join w/ = join with

slp st = Slip Stitch

skp = Skip

sp. = Space

nxt = Next

prev. = previous

st./st’s = stitch or stitches

beg. = beginning

* * = Complete sequence between the stars, the number of times stated;

x = Times; example Repeat 2 x or 2 times; 3 x or 3 times and so on;

in = example “in nxt st” means you will be inserting the hook under the top two loops of the next stitch to complete stitch or sequence of stitches stated

Special Stitch Guide:

scss3 = Single Crochet Spike Stitch 3; insert hook two rows below and execute sc st, repeat 2x in that same st, for a total of 3 sc spike st’s 

scss2 = Single Crochet Spike Stitch 2; insert hook two rows below and execute sc st, repeat in that same st, for a total of 2 sc spike st’s

Row 1:

chain 24
sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; ch 1 & Turn (23 st)

Row 2 – 4:

sc in 1st st and in each ch across; ch 1 & Turn; at the end of Row 4, drop MC & pull up CC at the last pull through of the last sc of Row 4 (23 st) Cut MC leaving approx. a 6″ tail, to weave in later.

Row 5:

sc in 1st st; skp 1 st, scss3 in Row below; *skp 2 st’s, scss3 in row below* 6x; skp 1 st, sc in last st; drop CC & pull up MC at the last pull through of this last sc; ch 1 & turn (2 sc & 7 scss3) Cut CC leaving approx. a 6″ tail, to weave in later.

Row 6-15:

sc in 1st st and in each st across; ch 1 & turn; at the end of Row 10, drop MC & pull up CC at the last pull through of the last sc of Row 10 (23 st) Cut MC leaving approx. a 6″ tail to weave in later.

Row 16:

sc in 1st st; skp 1 st, scss3 in Row below; *skp 2 st’s, scss3 in row below* 6x; skp 1 st, sc in last st, drop CC & pull up MC at the last pull through of this last sc; ch 1 & turn (2 sc & 7 scss3) Cut CC leaving approx. a 6″ tail, to weave in later.

Row 17-20:

sc in 1st st and in each st across; ch 1 & turn (23 st) Fasten off at the end of Row 17, weave in all ends. Tie fringe to the sides of the Mug Rug every two rows, mixing the colors if you choose, or matching the colors to the rows. I like a mixed look.
Finished Measurements : 7.5″ w x 5.75″ h
