Nautical Placemat Free Crochet Pattern

Welcome, friend! If you’ve been looking for a crochet placemat pattern that blends classic stitches with coastal charm and a functional twist, you’re going to love this one. The Nautical Crochet Placemat with a Fabric Silverware Pocket is a long-time favorite in my shop, and I’m thrilled to offer the free version of the pattern right here on the blog. Purchase the ad free pdf in my ETSY or RAVELRY store.

I sometimes use affiliate links in my posts. This won’t cost you anything, but will help offset the cost of yarn and other supplies needed, so that I can continue bringing you crochet patterns and craft ideas. Thank you so much for your support.

Nautical Placemat with beautiful blue dishes setting on it. Silverware is in the fabric pockets.

Not only is this placemat stylish and simple to make—it also has a sewn fabric triangle added to the side, creating the perfect little pocket for your silverware. Whether you’re decorating for a beach house, setting the table for a themed dinner, or looking for a year-round staple, this crochet placemat is a beautiful addition to any home.

A Coastal-Inspired Crochet Placemat You’ll Use Again and Again

This pattern has stood the test of time, and for good reason! It’s part of my Seaside Reflections Home Décor Collection, which includes 4 other coordinating crochet designs:

  • A coastal Table Runner

  • A charming Mug Rug

  • A Round Basket

  • And a practical Napkin Basket

Crochet one or crochet them all for a cohesive set that gives your kitchen or dining space a handmade, nautical vibe.

Why You’ll Love This Crochet Placemat Pattern

Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned crocheter, you’ll appreciate the simplicity, flexibility, and charm of this design. Let’s dive into some of the key features:

 Pattern Highlights

  • Beginner-friendly: Easy to follow with clear instructions.

  • Easily accessible yarn: Works well with cotton or acrylic yarn.

  • Customizable: Change the yarn color or fabric to match any season, holiday, or home décor.

  • Functional design: The fabric silverware pocket adds a unique and practical touch.

  • Helpful tutorial support: Video guides available for:

    • Adding the fabric silverware pocket

    • Working the spiked single crochet stitch

The Silverware Pocket is A Special Touch

One of the standout elements of this placemat is the sewn fabric triangle that’s tacked on to form a pocket. It’s perfect for slipping in a fork, knife, and spoon—making every place setting look extra polished and put together.

I used Waverly fabric from Walmart to create the nautical-themed pockets, but you can use any cotton fabric to match your theme. From patriotic prints for summer holidays to warm tones for Thanksgiving, the options are endless. The tutorial below will show you how to add fabric to your Nautical Placemat.

Customize It to Fit Your Style

Though this pattern was designed with a nautical theme in mind, you can easily adapt it to your personal décor:

  • Use red, white, and blue for patriotic holidays

  • Choose fall tones for Thanksgiving

  • Try vibrant pastels for spring and Easter

  • Or stick with neutral tones for year-round use

With just a few color changes and a fabric swap, you can remake this placemat to suit any holiday or season.

Thank you Lynne…I am really thinking Christmas…and then clipping off the Christmas fabric and tacking on Valentines…then clipping that off and putting on the Fourth of July. Oh…and if you use a cranberry color it could translate into Thanksgiving as well…just change the fabric. Now I’m wishing I had made my set Cranberry. LOL

These placemats are so cute! I love the triangles for tableware or napkins! One thing though, when you are sewing the edges of the triangles do utopia sew a standard 1/4” seam? Can’t wait to make these in cotton yarn. What cotton yarn do you recommend?

Thank you…I use a 3/8″ seam, as the weave is coarser than most cotton fabrics. This is a lightweight decorator weight fabric. I am considering napkins…and I even thought the fabric would make a nice skirt, with flat felled seams on the sides, and maybe one down the front….I am rambling aren’t I? But I refuse to write what I just typed. LOL It was exactly what was running around in my head.

Thank you…and I understand…I have placemats that I eat on, and then there are placemats that I pull off to the side and then clean up…and then put it back in place to look pretty. Although…I wouldn’t hesitate to wash this.

This is one pattern of yours I do not have. I just thought of making it the colors of the sunflower coasters as a set or use the pattern as a table runner? What do you think?
